“A s a parent I think we spend most of our time worrying about our kids’ bedrooms, but we thought

we should also pay attention to our own room,” says Sarah. “It was an interesting consideration for us to suddenly realise that our room was actually the one that most needed to have a facelift.”

Choosing to refresh their bedroom through the use of paint, the couple decided to give the entire room a fresh look, including introducing a feature wall.

“I started to build a Pinterest board and noticed that a lot of the images I was shortlisting had a coastal vibe,” explains Sarah. “I pinned a lot of blues, greys and green colours, but overall there was a sense of a coastal feel that emerged.”

When it comes to deciding on paint colours for your bedroom walls, it’s important to use colour swatches for guidance.

“Selecting a few swatches and showing these colours in situ is really important before making that final decision,” says Dulux colour expert Andrea Lucena-Orr. “Remember it’s not just the colours on the walls that make up a bedroom, you also have to look at what items you intend on keeping, as well as any new purchases you are looking to introduce.”

Once you have your decision down to a couple of paint colours, you can then have a play with sample pots. “Testing out your chosen colours on A4 size sample sheets, taped against the wall will ensure that you know exactly how the colour is going to appear in your bedroom,” says Lucena-Orr. “It’s also important to leave these samples up for two to three days before you decide, that way you can see how the colours look during daylight hours and also at night with artificial lighting.”

T he couple then used Dulux colour swatches to help narrow down the paint choices and were ultimately drawn to the colour ‘Dewpoint’ for the feature wall and ‘Natural White’ for the rest of

the room – a colour they intend on using throughout the rest of the home. The swatches were also used to help select what new linen, accessories and furnishings the couple decorated the room with.

When it came time to paint, the couple took on a divide-and-conquer approach; Sarah did the cutting in, whilst Jon rolled on the paint colours.

The couple are really pleased with the outcome of their DIY project and are are proud to have created a calming and beautiful space in the just a few days that they can retreat to at the end of a busy day.

• If you’re hoping to get your makeover done in a weekend, paint early in the morning, allowing the walls to dry in the afternoon. And opening a window to let the room air out, means you can get back into your room sooner.

• Bring your chosen paint swatches with you for inspiration when shopping for new linen, accessories and furnishings for the room.
