Skeet shooting offers year 'round ex-tra income for your club. A new sport which has drawn phenomenal inter-est. A new source of revenue, already proved at many golf clubs.

Skeet is a natural as an alternate out-door sport for golfers, r ight through the golf season and on through Fall and W i n t e r w i thou t le t -up. Called "Shotgun Golf" it requires perfect co-ordination of hand, eye and brain — close study of stance, form, balance, pivoting, weight shifting, swing and follow-through. Like golf it can be enjoyed as a serious tournament or

as a kidding match, as the shooters choose.

Let us send complete details, tell you how little a Skeet field can cost, and explain why best results are obtained with the new Western MASTER Skeet Traps. Equipped with hand-cocking levers and wire release. Also furnish-ed for A.C. current or storage battery release. The Western Skeet Booklet, shown below, will be sent FREEITells all about the sport. quick to seize upon th is possibili ty of revenue in making the i r f inancial ar range-ments with the Board of Directors . Or frequent ly, it has been found, individuals or the en t i re commit tee sponsor a loan for the purpose of instal l ing the equip-ment, the club t r easu re r automat ica l ly re-tiring the no te or notes as revenue ac-crues.

Those who have tried t h e pay-as-you-shoot plan describe it as effective under almost all conditions. Even if a club has only twen ty shooters , the individual bur-den of r e t i r ing the inves tmen t in equip-ment is sl ight. Usually the number of new shooters a t t rac ted to skee t in la te fall, winter and early spr ing so swells the list of pa t rons of the ins ta l la t ion tha t one shooter seldom contr ibutes more than $10 through the t a rge t tax.

Summing it all up, this skee t bus iness is so s imple to install and easy to maintain, especially unde r the pay-as-you-shoot plan, tha t i t 's a wonder the t r a p m a n u f a c t u r e r s a ren ' t swamped with orders .

Records of the phenomenal growth of skeet indicate tha t every man who ever fired a gun has at least a potent ia l skeet complex. All he needs is a method of ex-pression—in short , a place to shoot skeet .

THE WOMAN SPEAKS Greenlceeper's W i fe Says Club

Let's Husband Slave —and Starve

" Is there a code covering golf course workers?" asks this wife of a much overworked and under-paid greenkeeper-caretaker-manager-carpenter-jack-of-all-trades at an Iowa course. It's a tip-off to the advantage some unthinking clubs are tak-ing of the present employment situation in the greenkeeping field.

I W A N T T O S A Y a word in de fense of the • " forgo t ten m a n " of the golf industry, the greenkeeper -care taker . Anyway I'll call it a defense—maybe I 'm jus t le t t ing off a l i t t le s team. If I told you about a man who worked twelve, f ou r t een and somet imes s ix teen hours a day for seven months and received only $420 a year for his work, you'd tell me the man must be crazy wouldn' t you? Yet, being the wife

of one of these crazy men, I can tell you still more.

W e are in charge of a beaut i ful l i t t le roll ing 9-hole course here, on a lake shore. The course is suppor ted by two nea rby towns and the re a r e a lot of fine people f rom both towns who play here. W h e n we came here some years ago, f r iend hus-band was one of two men who drew a f a i r wage for six mon ths of the year. Then came the depress ion and the o ther m a n was laid off. Fr iend husband took a cut in wages and assumed the work of two men , and anyone who has ever worked on a golf course must have some idea of how much must be done.

For five years he has a t tempted to clean sand t raps , mow greens three t imes week-ly, se t up tables for dinner par t ies , t end fu rnace fires, keep rough mowed, mow fair-ways, keep caddies somewhere wi thin bounds, care for tees, wash dishes a f t e r par t ies , clean up the clubhouse, repai r ma-chinery, do ca rpen t ry work and plumbing. In fact , somet imes I wonder how m a n y men I 've marr ied and then again, I won-der if I have a man a t all, I see him so se ldom!

I t ' s a grea t l i fe! But somehow the joy of work well done t u r n s sour when we a r e only provided with a 3-room house, have only a h a m m e r and screw driver provided to work with and a re not given a l iving wage. But we have four children, two in high school, and we m u s t t ry to give them an adequate educat ion.

I wonder, does our club apprec ia te the use of some $150 wor th of this crazy man's own tools, all his e f for ts to keep expenses down, his long hours of work, his runn ing to tu rn on spr ink le rs some thought less p layer has turned off?

W e wish our job was included in some NRA code so we could at least make ex-penses . He mus t t ake a job cornpicking, or wha t have you, to keep us through t h e winter . Do the d i rec tors try to find us a job for the balance of the year? They do no t !

In fact , when we asked for wallboard to finish a four th room we managed to get , they told us they couldn ' t afford it. I won-der, can we afford to heat a room ent i re ly unf inished? Our wages? Out of $1300 spen t dur ing the year a year ago, $350 was spen t for wages. Yes, I guess they appre-ciate what my greenkeeper , ca re taker , jack of all t rades husband has done—not.' So w h a t ?

JIT ST A WIFE,

1935 N E W CLUB I D E A S Makers Present Design Changes

to Increase 1935 Club Sales

£*HANGES in club design a l r eady an-nounced for 1935 lines are of a char-

ac ter tha t ought to st ir up buying interest . Instead of the meaningless changes in sole plates and face insets s imply to make the clubs look different, the m a k e r s have come through with some decided innova-tions for nex t year.

Some of the new equipment a l ready has had enough tes t ing during the la te par t of this season to prove its mer i t as a sales maker when the curtain goes up for 1935. Wilson's Turf-Rider woods, designed by J im Gallagher, c lubmaking exper t former ly with the PGA are examples of clubs tha t got a good selling and pe r fo rmance tes t late this season. Burke's Punchi rons , put on the m a r k e t in late July a f t e r a two-year test , also regis tered very well. These clubs are made in 9 and 10 iron sets . There is no put t ing and no driving iron in these sets. The re is a 45 iron (about ha l fway between a 4 and a 5) which is prac-tically a j igger, and a No. 8 p i tcher in the fea tured 9 club set. No radical changes a re in Burke 's 1935 woods. There are a lot of changes in Burke 's bag line and pros have clicked to these improve-ments by mak ing heavy fall bookings for Burke bags. The Long Burke ball con-struct ion has been changed and it will be the company 's leader as a top grade tough cover ball.

Hagen has a new and in te res t ing Honey Boy iron set among other new irons. There are new models in this line, some of which a re about as rich looking woods as the eye will res t upon. There ' s a new metal baffy a l ready in product ion which has received an early O. K. f rom the pros.

Spalding's Jones "Form Grip," described elsewhere in th is issue, has t ipped off big 1935 sales possibilit ies by a l ready s t i r r ing up sales at a t ime when the year ' s business is practically over .

Hillerich and Bradsby a re br inging out woods and irons that have an in te res t ing

background. Bill Mehlhorn s tar ted wi th the original models of these clubs a t t he beginning of the s u m m e r tournament sea-son and visited hundreds of profess ionals in the i r shops and at t he tou rnament s get-t ing cr i t ical comments on the clubs. A f t e r the boys' had thei r say and the many sug-gest ions considered and sif ted, p a t t e r n s for the final designs we re made. Bill m a i n t a i n s tha t the clubs as finally ap-proved have drawn on the fine ideas of more pro c lubmaking and playing expe r t s t h a n any other clubs tu rned out of a shop and ci tes names as long as one wan t s to l is ten to prove his point .

H e r b e r t Lagerblade of the Horton-Bris-tol Sales Corp. namds as a headl iner of the Bristol clubs, bags and balls for 1935 the new Bristol woods which are of a s t r ik ingly dist inct ive design, sl ightly stream-lined to help the player get t h e ball up. These clubs a r e finished wi th a liand-rubbed stain which gives t h e m a handsome stand-out look in any pro shop display. The Pyramid iron design has gone over in such good shape tha t it again is the Bristol iron leader in the 1935 line-up. T h e r e are some changes in m a r k i n g but t he basic principle of the heads is the same.

Vulcan ' s men are a l ready out with a fine new line of "red ho t " woods and irons, which add to but do not replace the com-pany 's 1934 models, which went over so well th i s past season t h a t they will be con-t inued for 1935.

True Temper Has New Shaft The Amer ican Fork and Hoe labora tor ies

have several sha f t developments coming out in 1935 a f t e r s t r enuous sessions in playing and laboratory tes t s . One of the AF&H new True T e m p e r products about which the re has been much advance chat-t e r is a laminated sha f t which is produced by spi ra l ly winding ex t remely thin alloy s teel r ibbon. In a sense, design may be compared with tha t commonly used paper wrapped pencil.

P r o s who have tes ted these s h a f t s com-ment on an unusual ly swee t "feel" a t im-pact . It has the abil i ty to part ial ly absorb and diss ipate sha f t s t ra ins , says Bob Cow-drey of the True Temper outfit.

In golf clubs large or golf clubs small, bar service problems demand careful consideration.Whether the need is for a standard type of ser-vice, complete with backbar and full equipment—for the small port-able c o c k t a i l ba r or fo r a beer cooling and serving unit, "Liquid" is best equipped to supply you.

Many installations in both pre-tentious and modest clubs bear tes-timony to the value of consulting us. A letter on your club stationery will bring suggestions which will in no way obligate you to buy.

One of the first places where the gift box deal will click good and s t rong is with the corporat ion executives. Tes ts prove tha t the distribution is a lmost 100% perfect , according to Lyndon, with a wide range of pressures, and the coverage is all t ha t can be secured with the size of nozzle in use. Both are mounted on new improved disc bases tha t have already become popular.

Lyndon reports an excellent volume of business the past season and prospects for still greater volume for 1935. A re-cent survey by him shows that the aver-age golf club is in almost flattering con-dition compared with the past two years.

He fur ther s ta tes tha t their company is a t present cooperating with several golf courses, helping them to work out a fair-way low cost water ing system for 1935, and tha t the tendency is toward the lower pressure and hose system because of the importance of being able to place sprin-klers where they should be to offset wind conditions and to water the par ts tha t need watering.

New York City—Spalding 's are offering a new fea ture in their 1935 line of Bobby Jones clubs, in the way of a "Jones Form Grip." It is said to be a decided s tep in clubmaking and a help to both the tourna-ment and average golfer. The special fea-tures claimed for the Jones Form Grip a r e :

It will improve iron play because with it a player is able to relax his wris ts a bit more at the top of the swing thereby mak-ing sure of proper cocking without losing the sense of club head location.

The grip adapts itself to a natural posi-tion of the hands and promotes a hand consciousness of the club face.

It is a form tha t permits choking; flexi-bility in the longitudinal position of the hands being desirable.

The section is made partially flat on the r ight side—the specific purpose of this is to set up to the sense of feel a positive location of the s tr iking side or face of the club. This somewhat flat section is established parallel to the center of the s t r ik ing face and perpendicular to the in-tended direction for the ball.

It assists in obtaining the correct grip and provides for the f ree r and more effec-tive use of the le f t hand (right hand play-er) as well as encouraging a unified action of both hands.
