As a direct consequence of sweating, the body loses water and tends to dehydrate rapidly: this may cause a severe drop in sports perfor-mance, the onset of cramps, a strong feeling of fatigue, and even serious health risks.

SCIENCE IN THE SERVICE OF SPORT TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCEThe human body has fat energy stores, which are usually sufficient not only to meet normal me-tabolic needs, but also for the most demanding sports disciplines. When the human body is cor-rectly trained and properly nurtured, protein sto-res are sufficient to meet energy requirements during sports performance. Only when carbohydrate depletion occurs - that is to say when muscular glycogen stores are consumed - muscle tissue catabolism takes place. On the contrary, carbohydrate energy sto-res are key factors for sports performance, and carbohydrate availability in blood and muscles is strictly linked to the onset of fatigue. When glycaemia drops under the physiological limit (5 mmol/l), performance is compromised.

Significant scientific results, as well as experience, show the importance of replenishing water to-gether with adequate proportions of electrolytes and carbohydrates. Taking these nutrients before and during sports performance may really make the difference. Sports products must contain essen-tial electrolytes [Sodium (Na) - Potassium (K) - Chlorine (Cl) - Magnesium (Mg)] in the correct propor-tions and quantities. Moreover, to avoid a rapid consumption of blood glucose and muscular glycogen stores, a mix of carbohydrates with different assimilation speeds is preferable, in order to support the athlete throughout his/her performance.

An adequate glucose supply guarantees easily available energy stores for central nervous sy-stem and for muscles: this means longer physi-cal exercise sessions, improved mental attention and neuromuscular coordination, delayed physi-cal and mental fatigue. In some cases, it may be useful to take also amino acids in order to tackle energy demands during intense physical exerci-se, to reduce muscular catabolism and to miti-gate the feeling of fatigue.

Sports drinks can be divided into three groups: • Hypertonic > 300mOsm/l• Isotonic = 300mOsm/l• Hypotonic < 300mOsm/l

Osmolarity (Osm) represents the unit of measure of the osmotic pressure exerted by one fluid on another. Osmolarity gives us information about the speed of gastric emptying and about the le-vel of activity required by the body to assimilate a solution.

According to the different ingredients contained in food supplements, the energy intake, the insu-lin response, the rehydration and gastric emp-tying speed vary. The ideal sports drink to take during exercise should have good energy intake, modest insulin response, strong hydrating power and fast gastric emptying and absorption speed.

Athletes should drink during performance, taking into account that the volume of liquids affects the gastric emptying speed. For this reason, athletes should follow accurate intake guidelines: optimal results are obtained taking 100-200 ml of solu-tion every 15-20 min. during exercise, up to 8-900 ml/h. Very intense physical exertion resulting from prolonged training, often requires specific nutrition to improve athletic response. However, supplements are not all the same.

The substances consumed by the human body often need to be associated with metabolic co-factors in order to be efficiently assimilated and metabolized. A profound knowledge of the body’s biochemistry permits to design effective sup-plements that have beneficial effects on sports performance.

IMPORTANTNot all people have the same digestive abili-ties and not all sports require the same effort. HOW INGREDIENTS WORK

NITRIC OXIDE AND PERFORMANCE POWERFLUX® is a pre-race energy blend based on amino acids and concentrated extract of red beetroot (Trubeet™), substances capable of supporting the nitric oxide’s metabolism and performance, bene-ficial for athletes who perform very intense sports activities. (See figure 1).

AN INNOVATIVE BLEND The mixture combines for the first time red beetroot with a high content of nitrates, with arginine and citrulline, strong antioxidants (Vit C and Vit E), caffeine and highly branched cyclic maltodextrins (HBCD), in presence of Palatinose™, fructose and vitamin B3.

A PATENTED MIXTUREIn an observational study conducted on medium-high level athletes, it was demonstrated that this innovative association is far more per-forming than similar mixtures of similar nutrients.

NITRIC OXIDE AND VASODILATIONThe mixture is useful in the pre-competition phase, for athletes who perform intense activities, because it provides nutrients that the body can convert into nitric oxide, the “tool” used by our body to in-duce vasodilation. (See figure 1).

LOW IG SEQUENTIAL CARBOHYDRATESThe mixture provides simultaneously HBCD, isomaltulose and fruc-tose, three carbohydrates with different chemical-physical cha-racteristics, which therefore follow slightly different metabolic ways and allow a continuous and gradual glucose transfer. The presence of HBCD lowers the osmotic pressure of the mixture and makes the gastric transit faster.

GLYCEMIC PEAKS, INSULIN AND FAT ACCESSThe presence of HBCD, Isomaltulose and Fructose, molecules that do not generate high glycemic peaks, allows a faster and more ef-fective access to fat stores, because not inhibited by excess insulin.

HMB, acronym of Idrossi Metil Butirrato, is a metabo-lic product, synthesized by the body to start from Leu-cine. In cellular environment, part of this essential amino-acid withstands a transamination reaction. The result is leucine keto-acid, called α-chetois-ocaproato (KIC), which has anti-catabolic features precursor amino-acid.
