Behalt is a 10 ft. x 265 ft. oil-on-canvas painting that illustrates the heritage of the Amish and Mennonite people from their Anabaptist beginnings in Zurich, Switzerland, to the present day. Behalt means “to keep” or “remember.”

Guided ToursLocal Amish and Mennonite guides will take you on a 30-minute tour of Behalt, pointing out the highlights of the painting. Tours include a 15-minute video on the local plain community.

One-Room School | Pioneer Barn Learn about Amish education and its connection to one-room public schools in our restored, pre-Civil War school house. In the pioneer barn, you will see an Amish buggy display and an original conestoga wagon that brought early settlers from Pennsylvania to this region.

MuseumOur exhibits address some of the most commonly asked questions about the Amish and Mennonite way of life. The museum is free of charge. It features Amish apparel, a collection of rare Amish and Mennonite books, and local artifacts.

Bookstore | Gift ShopIn our bookstore, you will find a wide selection of books about the Amish and Mennonites, some of them written by members of the plain community. Our gift shop includes handmade baskets and other local crafts.

“The Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center is well worth a stop if you are traveling through Holmes County, Ohio! “Behalt” is an inexpensive but very creative history lesson of the Amish and Mennonite culture. The mural is amazing!” —trip advisor
