M&SJoffices, which mostly involve making more jewelleryor

learning a new technique what will yours be? We're also

planning to see in 2015 with a bang and have several stylish party

bright multi layered necklaces (p52). For a more spiritual start to

the year, try our beautiful chakra necklace (p61), or a delicate

    silverlotus pendant and ring

We also delve further into chakras and the healing properties

of crystals (p56), discovering how jewellery could do more than just

look pretty. For those wanting to advance their precious metal

skills, our latest Masterclass takes you through the basics of

soldering and joining. What's more, we have two NEW

Alice in WONDERLANDFor years Ive wanted to make jewellery, but I was scared of failing and wasting

money. In September 2013, my husbandbought me a basic jewellery making kit,I played with it, failed and consideredselling it. However, in November I posteda photo of something I had made onFacebook. I had a lot of interest from my friends and theyencouraged me to open my own selling page. With their help, I launched Mrs Madhats TwistedCreations (www.facebook.com/mrsmadhatstwistedcreations.) One year later, Im workingfull-time, my items are being sold in a local gallery and I have lots of lovely customers - one ofwhom wore my jewellery to a red carpet event for Alice Through the Looking Glass. The moralof the story is, dont be afraid to try, have a little faith in yourself and love what you do.

I work from my very own craftyheaven, exclusively with acrylic in all itsforms, pearlescent, iridescent and myfavourite, glitter! The copper wire Viking Knit is filled with peridot, although its noteasy to see! The inspiration was the changing season and the birds in mygarden enjoying the last of the summer before its gone.

Saying goodbye to a salary is a big decision and shouldnt be takenlightly. Work out the minimum amount you would need to live on - behonest and take into account all your expenses. This figure is whatyou need to earn as profit from your business after all your costs havebeen taken away. Does this look viable? How many items would youneed to sell a week, and at what margin, to be able to meet that?

Get out there! Go to anetworking event, skills

workshop or craft fairwhichever road you go down, make the most of youropportunities. Also, don't beafraid to ask for help. Talk tofriends, family and othermakers, and find courses andsupport that will help you.

Be selective about whoyou listen to (including

me!) There is so much advice, ranging from well-meaning todestructive. Stay focused onwhat you want to achieve.

Gwin Kerry works with copper and enamel to create her stylishjewellery designs onwww.folksy.com. Here Gwin explains howshe made the leap to become a full-time designer and maker.

Learn more about running a successful jewellery business at www.blog.folksy.com

    Business MattersWITH

    Get the paperworkright. Keeping records,

registering as self-employedand organising insurance allhave to be done. You shouldalso have a contingency fundin place in case things dontgo as planned.

You already know thatyoull have to work hard

and put your all into yourbusiness but dont forget toput some time aside to relax, reflect on your achievementsand most importantly, enjoywhat you do.

    BE READY FOR

    HIGHS AND LOWS

    LEARN TO PRIORITISE

Going full-time is hard work. Therewill be ups and downs, and the downs

can become amplified when you are

    self-employed, so have strategies in

place to deal with them. Print out all

    your nice customer comments and

stick them on your walls. Go for a walk

if youre in a rut. Have a cup of tea

with another maker. Being in charge of

where and when you work is one of the

biggest benefits of being a full-time

jeweller, so make the most of it.

With no-one telling youwhat to do, it can bedifficult to manage your

time; make sure that youdesign a timetable thatworks for you. For somepeople that means accountson a Monday or a creativeday on a Friday; othersprefer to divide each dayinto set tasks. Find apattern that suits you, buttry to be strict with yourtime so that you completeone task before startinganother. For regular tasks,it can help to time how longeach one takes and scheduleit in a weekly calendar.

    Manage your time

    Do the maths

    C A S E

    S T U D Y

There will always be unexpected jobs that come up and its easy to get

distracted. When a new task comes in, work out how important it is

    - does it need to be done immediately or can it wait a day? Assign it to a

position in your system - which could be a workspace app like Evernote,

a calendar or even a notepad. Once its out of your head and logged in

your system, you can focus on working through your to-do list.

Expand your skillsetWhen you take the plunge, your job title doesnt become full-time

jeweller; it becomes part-time jeweller, part-time marketeer,

dispatcher, accountant, PR professional and administration

assistant. Youll need all of these skills to have a successful

business and you must be prepared to spend the majority of your

time fulfilling those roles. If you have weaker areas, strengthen

your skills - you can find advice online, in books or on courses.

    SelfCLARE YARWOOD-WHITE

    ADVISES ON HOW TO REVIEW

YOUR BUSINESS PLAN TO ENSURETHAT IT STILL WORKS FOR YOU

    assessment

    CLARES ADVICE

Dont be afraid to get started - writingsomething is better than nothing.

Remember your plan will change andevolve thats OK.

Dont ignore the bits you dont enjoy tackle them first and get help ifyou need it.

Keep an action plan, and listwhat you are going to do nextwith deadlines.

Have a clear vision - when you writedown your goals, they are far morelikely to happen!

Its important to have a business

plan so you have a clear focus. It will help you think through all

the elements that will affect yourbusiness - at the very least it

should state your vision for thefuture, how much money you want/need to make,

how you will make your products and marketthem, and who you are planning to sell them to.

You must revisit your plan regularly, as it willconstantly evolve. Dont expect to put all the

answers down on day one and then pack it awayin a drawer. There will be gaps you cant fill until

weeks or months down the line, or you will need tochange things as you discover what is and isnt

working. I recommend revisiting it at least everythree months, but if you keep the plan somewhere

you can see it and scribble notes as you work, it

    will serve you well!

You should assess all areas regularly, as nopart of a business exists in isolation they all

impact on each other. For example, if sales arelow you may decide to re-position your brand,

which could mean changing your marketing, pricing and packaging. By analysing all areas

you learn how things fit together, and get to

know your business off by heart. You should beas familiar with your sales targets as you arewith your supplier list - you cant afford to

ignore the bits you dont like!

Recognising that there is a problem is more

than half the battle. I know so many designersthat lose money on every piece they sell, but

they dont realise it because they're not lookingat their figures regularly. When you benchmark

against your plans, you can see where you arefalling short and take steps to fill any

knowledge gaps through reading, networking, taking a course or other research. Mentoring

can be extremely helpful, as sometimes it ishard to be objective when you are very close to

your business, and working alone can beisolating. Talking challenges through with

someone can really help, and youll usually findthat your problems are not unique.

Stay on track by setting aside time in yourdiary to work on your business plans. At least

once a quarter, schedule a day to review yourplans and set new targets. A huge pitfall is not

allowing enough time to work on your business plan to spend around 40% of your working

week making jewellery, and the rest onmarketing, selling, admin, bookkeeping etc.

Another common pitfall is ignoring the finances.

Setting targets when you start can feel like

pulling figures out of thin air, but it's better to dothis and then adjust as real figures come in, than

not record them at all. Some simple accountingsoftware will save you time, money and tears

    down the line.

Oorla Morgan creates her colourfuldesigns using gemstones from Jaipur,

Thai Hill Tribe beads, and gold filledwire and beads. She also has a modern vintage

range, recycling sterling silver charms to create

unique pendants.I started selling in 2010, first at jewellery parties,

craft fairs and a couple of local shops. Then in 2012I joined an artists collective at the Art Shed Gallery in

the Medicine Garden, Cobham, with eight other localartists and craftspeople. This was a fantastic

opportunity to work with other creative people and toget direct feedback from the public as we all take it in

turns to man the gallery, she reveals. Having my workon permanent display in the Art Shed was also the

springboard to selling in other galleries and designinga range for the National Trust. I also sell online via my

website, which went live in April 2013.

    COURSE WORK

    BUSINESS MENTOR

She continues, I must admit that the business side of

things came later as I just wanted to get on withmaking and selling my jewellery! I knew this was

something I would need help with so I enrolled onClare Yarwood-Whites Create a Craft Business

course in 2011. I wrote a business plan under herexpert guidance, which made me think about my

business in a far more structured and detailed way.It gave me a clear format so I could set targets and

time frames for review. It also made me focus onthings that were completely alien to me like branding

and marketing. The whole process made it far clearerabout what I was doing and why, and I was

surprised at how inspiring I found it.The last section of the plan was my action

planner which I hadnt quite got to on the course, butwas easy to fill in afterwards. The difficulty for me

was that there was so much to do that it felt reallyoverwhelming. I acted straight away on some of the

really urgent points like finding an accountant andsetting up a business bank account, while keeping the

rest of it in my head, with the inevitable result thatI gradually let the daily things take over while moving

the business forward went on the back burner.I always had my long term goals in the back of my

mind, but without setting deadlines I wasnt actuallymoving towards them.

    OORLAS VITAL HINTS

Make sure you set achievable goalsand deadlines.

Review regularly. If you havent meta deadline, ask yourself why butdon't be too hard on yourself! If thekids have been ill or youve had anunexpectedly huge order then youcant do it all. There are only somany hours in a day. Set yourselfanother deadline.

If you are putting a target off, behonest about why you haventachieved it. Think of a way aroundthe problem and move on, butwhatever you do, dont ignore it.

I decided that I needed someone to make me keep

working on my action planner in an organised way, soI booked in for some one-to-one mentoring sessions

with Clare. She helped me review my business planand focus on the parts I'd been avoiding. We set steps

with deadlines and reviewed these every couple ofweeks to ensure I was on target. The thought of her

disappointed face was enough to make me tackle the

bits I normally avoid!Oorla adds, Over time some of my goals haveevolved. Because of the work I have been doing for the

National Trust I didn't have time to do a trade fair in2014, so that will go on my plan for next year. I would

love to be able to employ someone to help with theadmin side of things in the near future (I know my

weaknesses!) so I can focus on the parts of the businessI love best.

I think its very important to review yourshort term and medium term goals at least once a

month to ensure you are making progress, with a morethorough review about every six months to a year.

Regular checking of medium term goals will keep youon the right track. Sometimes it can feel as if you arent

achieving much at all but when you consistently reviewand set new aims, you'll continue ever forward towards

your overall goals. See Oorla's full collection at

    MELODIES TOP TIPS

Dont be afraid of messing it up,because you cant. Your plan is atool to help you get a clear visionfor your business. Its not aschool essay and only has to berelevant to you.

Keep track of your finances. Thatshow you know how much moneyyou have to spend on marketing.

Keep an open mind to allow foropportunities you were notexpecting. They might take yourbusiness in a new direction.

At first, I didnt expect it to become a full-time job,

but I had to think of a name for my Etsy shopwhich led to thinking about my branding, creating

a logo, colour scheme and a line of thought. I alsohad to find a pricing formula to make sure that

I wouldnt sell at a loss and would make a profit.I was getting more and more excited about the

creation of my own brand and started thinkingabout how to market my products and finding my

customer base. But it was mostly ideas in myhead or notes on piece of paper; I had nothing

    linked together.

However Melodie soon found that she wasstarting to lose track of where she wanted her

brand to go. Attacking the finance side wasdaunting too, she adds. I needed to learn more

about how to run a small business so I attendedthe Design Your Career conference where I was

greatly inspired by Clare Yarwood-White. Shemade me realise that to grow your business you

require structure and thats really when I feltlike I needed to write down my plan.

I registered for Clare's Create Your Craft

Business e-workshop and realised thatI actually had a pretty good idea of where

I wanted my business to go and how to getthere. It was mostly a matter of putting it on

paper, allowing me focus on getting the 'scary'part right. For me that mostly meant finance,

but its pretty straightforward once you knowthe basics and Clare provides great ready-made

Excel templates which helped immensely. In a month I had all the data I needed and

the plan almost wrote itself. I knew what mybrand was, how to market it to the right

customers, how much money I had, would getand how to spend it, where I wanted to be in

one, two and five years time, plus a good idea ofhow to get there. However it wasn't until I

actually had to write it all down that my plan

    become a reality.

Melodie adds, I think that it is veryimportant to review your plan regularly; as a

small business you often have to adapt it toyour cash flow. You must also be versatile; find

different ways to advertise your product.Nothing is set in stone; your plan needs to

reflect whats going on with your real business, not a fantasised version of it.

projecting wire at thetop and create a linkusing round-nosedpliers. Cut off anyexcess and glue ontothe top of theteardrop. Repeat fortwo more teardrops, but add a 4mm and3mm cube to thelast one.

2Make a loopedhead pin with one

4mm cube bead andrepeat for another five, adding a 3mm cube tothe last two. Cut a

length of nylonfilament, crimp oneend and thread12.5cm of 3mm cubebeads. String one4mm cube head pin, four 3mm cube beads, one 4mm cube headpin, four 3mm cubebeads, a double cubehead pin, four 3mmcube beads, then alooped teardrop.Thread six 3mm cubebeads then a teardrop, six 4mm cube beadsand another teardrop, then repeat the 4mmlooped head pinpattern on the otherside. Once you have

added the final 4mmcube, string on 12.5cmof 3mm cube beads. To finish, crimp eachend of the nylon andattach a clasp.

    Hair Band

    1Cut four 12.5cmlengths of 0.8mm

wire and straightenout. Cut 25.5cm of

0.4mm wire andsecure one end to thecentre of one 0.8mmlength. Place a second0.8mm wire acrossthe centre of the firstto make a cross shapeand bind with 0.4mmwire. Position a third0.8mm wire acrossthe centre bindingsand secure by weaving

0.4mm wire in andout in a basket weavepattern. Once thethree wires are secure, place the final 0.8mmlength across theother wires to form

a star shape and bindtogether, weaving the0.4mm wire until thestar feels secure. Cutoff any excess andneaten the ends.

2Create a tightspiral on the end

of five 0.8mm wireends, no larger thanthe widest part ofa teardrop. Leave

a 2.5cm stemprojecting above eachspiral and leave therest of the stems untilthe decoration is readyto be attached. Adjustthe stem spirals in a

circular pattern andglue a teardrop toeach spiral to createflower petals. To createa wire flower frame, work directly froma spool of 0.8mm wireand using the tips ofround-nosed pliers, create a small link atthe end. Position thepliers 3cm from the

link and bend the wireback around to forma narrow loop.

    3Bend the wireback up, keeping

it at 3cm, and createfour further loops in

a zig-zag pattern. Onceyou have five loops ina row, cut from thespool, just below thelast loop. Using yourfingers, pull the top ofeach loop around toform a circular shapeand push the cut endinto the link to secure. To shape the loops intopetals, use chain-nosed

pliers to prise themopen at the centreand squeeze each ofthe ends into points.Keep manipulatinguntil you have thedesired shape. For the

wiggles of wirerunning within eachpetal space, use0.8mm wire and formthe wiggle patternwith round-nosedpliers, securing to thecentre of the flowerframe and the tipsof each petal.

    4Place the wirepetal frame

behind the teardroppetals and push theremaining projectingstems into the centreof the flower frame to

secure. Cut 25.5cm of0.4mm wire and useto bind the centre ofthe frames. Oncesecure, beginthreading theremaining 0.4mmwire with anassortment of beadsto fill the centre of theflower. Take a hairband and evenly bindwith 0.4mm wire and4mm cube hematitebeads, then secure the

flower into position onthe side of the band.

    1Wrap a length of1mm wire around

a circular mandrel, leaving 6cm projectingon each side of thebangle size desired.Use pliers to createa spiral on the end ofeach projecting wire, bringing themtogether so that theysit above each other atthe measured size. or many years I worked inadvertising in London butwhen I turned 30, it really

made me think about whatI wanted to be. I had always loved

jewellery design and would oftensketch ideas for rings and earringsin my spare time, so I decided tofinally do something about it.

I signed up to a jewellery makingcourse; I knew re-training was goingto be time-consuming so I took thestep of going part-time at work and

put myself on a professionalsilversmithing and enamelling course. As well as studying, I decided toapproach some jewellers in HattonGarden that I respected and waslucky enough to get anapprenticeship - being trained byCentral Saint Martins and HattonGarden was amazing and it taughtme skills that I didn't know existed!Whilst studying, I began designingmy first collections, set up mywebsite and approached someboutiques. I had no previous businessexperience but my background inadvertising was really useful for

helping me to promote and marketmy brand.

I find my inspiration in everythingand everywhere, from childhoodmemories to the wonderful city I livein; I often go to the V&A Museum andThe British Museum to feel inspiredby truly great artists and wonderfularchitecture. My first collection,Voodoo, was inspired by an ancientAfrican tribal mask that I sawexhibited at The British Museum, therest of the collection grew from there. My Star-Crossed Lovers set wasinfluenced by literary characters, from

Romeo and Juliet to Cathy andHeathcliff. The interlocking rings aremeant to represent their darkromantic love for each other, it wasgreat fun to do! Finally, aphotographer friend visited Miamiand on seeing her pictures, I fell inlove with the clash of 1920s Art Decoarchitecture and the bright neon1980s vibe. I tried to combine both of

these things in my collection, MiamiVacation, which includes my signaturepineapple design.

When I saw my pineappleearrings featured in Vogueandpublished twice in The Sunday TimesStylemagazine, it was a real honour.I've also gained famous clientsincluding Cara Delevigne and MaryCharteris, who continue to return fornew pieces. This year, I've begunselling in boutiques in Singapore andAmerica so I hope to grow bothnationally and internationally.I'm also making my first men's

collection so who knows wherethat will take me!

    I started making

    jewellery at an early age

    and went on to study

    silversmithing at college.

I was lucky enough to be

given a full set of tools

    from a cousin in the

    profession and I still use

    them today I love the

    fact that theyre vintage

and have been passed through several

generations of jewellers before reaching my

hands. I began making rings after a customer

asked me to make a set that encapsulated the

birthstones of her family; one individual ring

to mark her birth month and
