Submissions Package 2015

Page 2: Make Modern Submissions Package 2015

submission guidelinesWe are always looking for modern quilting and sewing projects – be it a quilt, cushion, bag, home decor item or another sewing project. Submissions should suit the modernaesthetic. The following are a few guidelines to consider when submitting a projectidea.

Submissions are to be sent via email to [email protected]. Pleaseinclude a photo (.jpg file), or a sketch of your project as well as a brief description ofwhat it is and techniques used. We’d love to know your blog address/IG tag so that wecan have a look at some of your other work. We will review your submission idea andlet you know if it suits what we’re striving for at .

Projects need to be original. We don’t mind if pictures have been shared at some pointon your blog or IG or your quilt group, so long as there hasn’t been a tutorial posted, ora pattern offered for sale or for free for that project.

We require clear, concise step by step directions for how you made your project (seetemplate below). We will have basic instructions listed on our website for techniquessuch as basting and binding so you don’t need to include these, unless you wish toshowcase the way you do it, or your pattern requires a different method. Please notewe may change the instructions slightly to suit the style of our magazine.

Should your pattern require applique or foundation piecing templates, please ensurethat these will fit on a 7 ¾” x 10” page for easy printing.

We will need a minimum of 3 quality photographs of your finished projects (butobviously more is better!). Please include a photo of the finished project, as well asclose ups of any special techniques or key areas of the project. You can read moresuggestions and tips on photography further on.

If you don’t have a copy of yet, you can see a preview of Issue One herethat will give you an idea of our magazine and aesthetic.

You will retain all rights to your work but we ask that you do not offer your pattern forsale (or for free!) while the issue is current – that is until the following issue goes onsale. Issues are published every two months, so two months from the date the issuegoes live.

We would love if you could also submit a brief blurb about yourself including a photoor blog logo and your social media details. Please note that these will be listed in themagazine for publicity purposes.

If you have any questions, please let us know via [email protected]

MaterialsPlease list all fabric requirements in inches. (Err on the generous side when calculatingfabric requirements.)Please also state which blocks/section each fabric is for.If you are working from scraps or stash, please calculate approximate number of scrapsrequired and minimum size of each piece.

Quilt topFabric 1Fabric 2 etc(include all borders and binding here)Backing:Yardage required or if it’s a pieced backing, then individual fabric requirementsBattingYardage required - generally this is the finished size of the quilt plus about 6” all around.OtherAny specific notions required such as fusible webbing, glue stick, buttons, and embroiderythread. General sewing supplies including thread, sewing machine, sewing machine feet, rotary cutter and mat, scissors will be assumed. If any particular tools are required, pleaselist these.Fabric notesThis is optional, but if you used a particular line of fabric it is useful for readers to know.

Quilt Size (in inches)

Preparation and CuttingPlease give as much detail as possible in cutting directions. Please use inches when cutting.State the technique being used, eg: rotary cutting, appliqué, English paper piecing...It is useful if you can include a photograph of each block so readers can see exactly whatthey’re meant to be making.Use numbers to distinguish each section of cutting. For example:Block One (six blocks total of this block): From blue homespun, cut six, 2 ½” x 4 ½ “ rectangles. From red print, cut four, 3 “ squares, cross cut on the diagonal to yield eight half squaretriangles.

PiecingBlocksClearly explain how each block goes together, feel free to send photographs or diagrams ofthe construction process.Include how many of each block is in the quilt and the finished size of each block.Sashings and Borders

Assembling the quilt topPlease explain how to piece the various components of the quilt together.

Assembling the quiltDetails of how to piece backing, sandwich the quilt, pin baste and bind will be in our generaldirections.

QuiltingPlease describe how you quilted your quilt, or had it quilted. If you have any suggestions forother ways you thought it might be able to be quilted, include these. We want to be able togive readers a few ideas/ options so they aren’t daunted by the quilting process.

OptionsWe would like to include some options for each of our projects to encourage readers to changethings slightly and adapt them to their own needs – this is how we grow as quilters. Forexample, for a baby quilt you might say “increase the number of blocks to 20 and lay out in afour by five grid to make this quilt single bed size”, or “just make one block for a gorgeouscushion”. We will add some options in as we put the magazine together, but if you have anyideas for a way your pattern could be changed around, feel free to include it.

Maker’s Social Media contacts and blurb (1-2 sentences)Please also include a photo of yourself or your brand logo to accompany your project.

Please note that these guidelines are not set in stone by any means, all projects are differentand will require differing levels of detail or perhaps different subheads – please tailor them tosuit your project. More description is better so readers can understand what you’re doing.

Please double check your measurements and work through the directions to make sure theyall make sense and you haven’t missed a step. You may like to get a friend to proof read ortest the pattern for you also. We will obviously proof read but we will not be testing everysingle quilt from start to finish. Bear in mind that because we do not have the actual item infront of us, we will be reliant on your text and pictures.

If it happens that you do make an error that is picked up later on (even after publication),please let us know so we can inform readers.

photographyAs well as any block and step by step photographs, we require one main photo of thequilt looking absolutely fabulous, and also one of the quilt flat so you can see the entirequilt at once so that readers can see what they’re working towards. If you have any hand-drawn templates or patterns, please scan and send these.

Here are a few photography tips to help you get the best shots

· Photograph in natural light where possible – beside a window so the light iscoming in to the side of the shot. Use a piece of white cardboard or foam boardon the other side to bounce the light back. Avoid the flash.

· Photograph outside, out of direct sunlight.

· Play around with different camera angles, eg: straight on, from above.

· Keep your background clear – make sure nothing distracts from the objectyou’re photographing. (we’re talking about those accidental distractions, youcan add props if you’d like).

· If possible take photographs of quilts straight on.

· Use simple backgrounds like a timber tabletop or neutral fabric. Note thatbackgrounds do not need to be white and white can be very tricky to photographon.

· Get in close, focus on the subject and fill the frame with the object.

· Get on eye level with your subject.

· Stage a photo of the object in use – eg: a bag with keys and phone, a tabletopper with a candle stick, a mug rug with a mug, a quilt wrapped around achild.

· Take lots of photos. Feel free to include a “hero shot” of your project for us toconsider for the front cover.

· Do not resize your photos before you email them – higher resolution gives usmore options.
