Make IT Happen 2008...

Success Stories!

Kilham Primary thoroughly enjoyed the Make IT Happen competition last year, with pupils who were involved being able to improve their computer skills and gain valuable experience of working in a team.

The school spent their prize money on coming down to London for the awards ceremony and treating the students to a wonderful day out. Kilham put the rest of the money towards a computer programme called Lexia designed to help children who struggle in Literacy. 6 out of the 8 girls in the group travelled down to London for the awards ceremony and had a fantastic day which they will remember for a long time. The girls went on the London Eye before the ceremony and then to Pizza Hut before travelling home.  This year the school have a group of 14 boys and girls from its Year 6 class working on their entry. They have already started designing a website so that the local community can find out what the school are up to.

Regional Winners Since winning the West Midlands award last year the pupils put their winnings towards drawing up professional plans for the local parks that their winning entry had campaigned for. The local youth forum has since used to the video that the students created for their entry as a tool to gain grants and sponsorship for the fund. It has also been featured in the local media.

This year another group of children have been hard at work beginning to develop their ideas for Gladstone’s entry. After the success of last year, children from all year groups were desperate to be part of the entry, so all students have been given some form of responsibility this time around.

With the school being based in a deprived area of Stoke on Trent the older children in particular were very aware of the lack of money around and the general low self-esteem of people in the local area. This brought up the idea of not just trying to make the judges for the new competition happy, but produce something that could perhaps play a little part in cheering everyone in the city up. Gladstone’s entry this year will be based around how great their city is… with a twist!
