Make it Easier for Your Employer to Grant You Paternity Leaves

Paternity leaves are becoming much more common nowadays than it was few years ago. And why not? Fathers have to play an equal role as mothers in the difficult first weeks with a new born and paternity leaves makes it much easier. Moreover, it helps in boosting male participation in the household as well enhance female participation in the professional arena. It helps in reducing gender gap and increases the chances of a woman returning to workforce even after having children.

Although many companies have now started giving paternity leaves to their employees, it is still far from being a norm for companies. However, men can make it easier for companies and for themselves to go on paternity leaves. Wondering how! Read through:

Early Planning

You will be surprised to see the difference an early planning can make on your paternity leaves. You must plan your work and if needed put some additional time at work to ensure that everything is ready to wrap up before you leave. Also, while the first few weeks with the baby can be overwhelming, it is important to have a solid plan in place to ensure that you spend your leaves not just by changing diapers but by doing some actual work to help your wife get back to work.

Work until the Last Minute

Leave is a precious resource and while it is natural to get tempted to take off few days before the due date, it is best to work till the last minute. This way you can maximize the time you can spend with your baby. Also, there are chances of due date being wrong or babies coming late and it makes no sense to sit idle before baby arrives.

Scatter Your Leaves

In the recent years there has been increasing trends of men scattering their leaves over few months instead of taking the entire leave in one go. Many men prefer taking few weeks off after the baby is born and few weeks when the mother decides to go back to work.

Be Available When Needed

You hold an important position in your workplace and no matter how much work you do before leaving, it is never enough. Therefore, it important that you stay available to answer occasional calls or emails for your colleagues so that your leave does not make a huge impact.

Mother and father must work as a team to raise the child and therefore paternity leaves are as important as maternity leaves. However, your responsibility towards your employer is equally important and you must take care of that before embarking towards the second one.
