Winx returns with easy trial at Rosehill

Continued on page 3>>

<< Continued from page 1 The Gary Moore-trained Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and Craven Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) winner Classic Uniform (Al Maher) was runner-up ahead of the Waller-trained Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock) in heat one in a time of 54.40 seconds.

Winx has only won one barrier trial in her career and yesterday’s unplaced effort had Waller smiling when speaking to media after the hit out.

“I came here looking for exactly that and my first impression is I’m very happy,’’ Waller said.

“(The result) probably puts into significance what trials are like and what horses are capable of.

“In the trial Hugh could have ridden her on a piece of cotton. She did everything right. Maybe there is a little more improvement.’’

Early last preparation, Winx was agitated in the barriers in her trials and first up in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), when she missed the start and was almost beaten by stablemate Foxplay (Foxwedge).

But yesterday Bowman said the six-year-old mare was more relaxed in the barriers than she was at the same stage last campaign.

"I'm happier with her temperament than I was at this time last preparation," Bowman said.

"I didn't ask her to do a great deal in the trial but I was pleased with how relaxed and happy she was going into the barriers.

"I'm always focusing on the starts. She can be a bit fractious but she was well behaved today.

"It's special to have her back and to have her so happy."Winx will have another barrier trial over 1000 metres at Rosehill on 5 February

before resuming in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick on 17 February.Waller was again reluctant to confirm whether the daughter of Street Cry

(Machiavellian) would travel to the UK for the Royal Ascot carnival in June.He said the George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on 17

March would be a defining race for the star mare.“One thing we respect is how hard it is to travel a horse and to get her

home,’’ Waller said.“She will be the best guide. We’ve given it plenty of thought but it

will be after her third run this preparation – probably the George Ryder – before we talk about her future.

“She’s a freak animal and when she’s at that level how can you run faster. Every challenge we’ve given her she’s risen to.

Tuesday 23 January 2018 | 3 |Winx returns with easy trial at Rosehill

<< Continued from page 2 “The Ascot picture is simply to satisfy a lot of people that want her on the other side of the world to perform. To show how good she is. But the horse comes first.’’

Redzel led the barrier trial before jockey Josh Parr eased the last-start Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner down late to finish seventh, beaten two and three quarter lengths.

“We were really pleased. He was only out there for a little pipe opener and an easy trial and he gave Josh a terrific feel,” Triple Crown Syndications’ Chris Ward told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He has returned in great order. He did well in the paddock, Peter and Paul are happy with where he is at and he has some condition on him they can work with going into the preparation.”

Ward confirmed Redzel target the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington first up before returning to Sydney for the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick.

Barrier trial winner Trapeze Artist proved to trainer Gerald Ryan that the three-year-old had returned well from a spell following his unplaced run in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m).

"He is always the forgotten horse. He's been forgotten all his life," Ryan said."He's a plain looking horse. He's brown with a white face but has a

great shoulder and a good girth and never leaves an oat."Ryan was considering the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at

Rosehill on 3 February or the Eskimo Prince Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Warwick Farm on 10 February as first up options for Trapeze Artist.

"He will have 55 kilos in the Expressway or 60 in the Eskimo Prince so the Expressway could be the better option," Ryan said.

Meanwhile, Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Ace High (High Chaparral) was beaten one and a quarter lengths in fifth, finishing ahead of Winx and

Redzel, with trainer David Payne weighing up first up options for the colt. Ace High could resume either in the Southern Cross Stakes (Gr 3,

1200m) against older horses at Rosehill on 17 February or the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Rosehill on 24 February.

“I was very pleased with him and he is on track. He is a much stronger horse, but mentally he is still a bit of a baby,” Payne said.

“We will see how he pulls up in the next few days and then we will decide (what race he starts in). He could resume in the Hobartville or the 1200 metres race the week before.”

The Darren Weir-trained five-year-old entire is joined by stablemates Stellar Collision (Star Witness) and Ken’s Dream (Dream Ahead) in the race. Stellar Collision, who is a five-year-old gelding, won the Christmas Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield on 26 December at his most recent start. Australia Day Cup attracts 16The Joe Pride-trained multiple stakes winner Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of Destiny) heads 16 nominations for the $150,000 Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Warwick Farm on Friday. The nine-year-old has won the last two renewals of the Listed race and is likely to carry top weight of 60.5 kilograms in his bid to secure a third consecutive Australia Day Cup. Mighty Lucky (Casino Prince) has been entered by trainer Fred Cowell, while the progressive Cordero (Gio Ponti) also features among the nominations. Click here to view the Warwick Farm nominations.

McEvoy fillies in Blue Diamond PreviewTrainer Tony McEvoy, who won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) with Sunlight (Zoustar), has three fillies nominated for Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield. There were 17 two-year-old fillies entered for the race including the McEvoy-trained Oohood (I Am Invincible), who was runner-up in the Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on 18 November, Ottawa

Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) runner-up Roobeena (Exceed And Excel) and the unraced Lake District Girl (Not A Single Doubt) set for the fillies division of the race. In the Blue Diamond Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m), McEvoy has the undefeated Run Naan (Makfi), who won the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) prior to a spell, among 14 nominations for the race.

Secret Lady heads to CaulfieldSydney trainer Gary Portelli intends to press on with the campaign of talented juvenile Secret Lady (Choisir) who is among the entries for Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview (F) at Caulfield. Secret Lady, who won the Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill on 25 November, ran fifth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on 13 January at the Gold Coast before returning to Portelli’s Warwick Farm stables. "She came back from the Gold Coast looking like she was ready to win,” Portelli said. "She one of those horses who carries a bit more condition than most and now she looks like she's right. We thought we would nominate her and if she drew well enough we'll run." Click here to view Saturday’s Caulfield nominations.

Prized Icon nominated for Carrington StakesPrized Icon (More Than Ready), who won the 2016 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), is set to have his first start for new trainer Kris Lees in Saturday’s Carrington Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill. The four-year-old was trained by James Cummings before owner Gooree Park Stud transferred the entire to the Lees stable when the former trainer moved to Godolphin. Prized Icon, who is among ten nominations for the $150,000 race, finished fourth in a 900 metres barrier trial on the Beaumont track at Newcastle on 5 January before finishing runner-up over 1000 metres at Wyong on 16 January. Maiden Italia Bella to resume at DoombenPromising three-year-old Italia Bella (Fastnet Rock) is set to take the first step towards the autumn carnivals when she returns at Doomben on Friday. Italia Bella is still a maiden but was twice placed at stakes level last winter, including when third in the BRC Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m). "She does look well placed in a set weights maiden. After that we can sit down and have a good look at races in Sydney or possibly Melbourne for her," trainer Stuart Kendrick said. "It is no secret I have a big wrap on her but she has to win some races first." Click here to view Friday’s Doomben nominations. Addictive Nature wins trialMing Dynasty Quality (Gr 3, 1400m) winner Addictive Nature (Savabeel) showed he could be a three-year-old capable of making an impact in Group One races during the autumn with an impressive barrier trial win at Rosehill yesterday. The Bjorn Baker-trained colt, who has not raced since finishing third in the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) on 9 September at Rosehill, won heat two over 900 metres on the Rosehill course proper to win by two and a half lengths over Sheikha (Sebring). Addictive Nature also won a 730 metres barrier trial at Randwick on 12 January.

Performer charges late at RosehillBreeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) winner Performer (Exceed And Excel), who is the early favourite for the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), won his second barrier trial this preparation with a strong closing performance at Rosehill yesterday. After winning a Rosehill barrier trial on 8 January over 900 metres, Performer yesterday won heat six narrowly over the Team Hawkes-trained Vedder (Star Witness) again over 900 metres. Ridden by Hugh Bowman, Performer settled back in the field to win in a time of 54 seconds on a Good 4 surface.

Merchant Navy to jump outCoolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) will jump out at Caulfield this morning. The Aaron Purcell-trained three-year-old, who is set to retire to Coolmore Stud when his racing career is over, is entered for heat two alongside stablemate Ocean’s Fourteen (Ocean Park). In heat one, the Purcell-trained Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Aloisia (Azamour), Sandown Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) winning stablemate Villermont (All Too Hard) and the Henry Dwyer-trained pair Snitty Kitty (Snitzel) and Crown Witness (Star Witness) are all set to jump out.

Gallop for She Will ReignTrainer Gary Portelli will give dual Group One winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) a gallop between races at Rosehill on Saturday rather than a second barrier trial ahead of her return in the $250,000 Inglis Sprint (1200m) at Warwick Farm on 10 February. The Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) winner trialled well under her own steam at Warwick Farm last Monday to finish second to Super Too (Hinchinbrook). "She's ticking away exactly where we expect a horse of her ability to be at," Portelli said. "She's probably just going to have a gallop between races on Saturday at Rosehill rather than having a barrier trial next Monday.”

Oakleigh Plate aim for Snitty KittyCaulfield trainer Henry Dwyer’s talented sprinter Snitty Kitty, who will jump out this morning on her home track, is being aimed at the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) next month. The four-year-old mare, who will jump out in heat one, has not raced since taking out the Caulfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1000m) on 21 October. "All along she's been a mare that every start and every preparation she's just got better and better and I wouldn't expect that to be any different this time," Dwyer said. "She's a strong mare but she's thickened up again. Her two wins last preparation, they were probably good enough to win an Oakleigh Plate, so she only really needs to come back as good as she was last time to be really competitive."

Golden Slipper second acceptances dueSecond acceptances for this year’s Golden Slipper Stakes close today. Second acceptances, which cost $1,000, can be lodged with the ATC via racinglounge.australianturfclub.com.au. To view nominations and second acceptances for the Golden Slipper stakes, click here.

Murray Bridge to race on ThursdayFriday’s Murray Bridge race meeting has been brought forward to Thursday in a bid to beat the predicted high temperature for Australia Day. Thoroughbred Racing South Australia announced yesterday that the meeting had been brought forward, but Saturday’s Morphettville and Kangaroo Island meetings would proceed as normal. Sunday’s Bordertown meeting has already been abandoned due to the likely oppressive hot weather.

Stolen Dance retiredStolen Dance (Alamosa) will bow out a Group One winner with the decision made to immediately retire the pregnant mare on the back of her victory in the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). She left the Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman yesterday, two days after her win at Trentham. "She went off this morning," Baker said. "It was a really satisfying win. She's a valuable broodmare now." Stolen Dance is in foal to Tavistock (Montjeu) and her owner Gerald Shand decided not to push on to the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m).

Love Affair’s run a mysteryWhile savouring the success of Stolen Dance, co-trainer Murray Baker was still scratching his head yesterday about the below par performance of Love Affair (Savabeel) in the Thorndon Mile, who was favourite for the Group One race. “We can’t find anything wrong with her,” Baker said. “She’s gone back to Waikato Stud for a break, she’s a very good horse.” Love Affair finished tenth in the Thorndon Mile as the $3.60 favourite.

Sacred Master returns to PikeGroup Two winner Sacred Master (Mastercraftsman) has returned to trainer Tony Pike after a spell in Sydney with Chris Waller. The six-year-old won once in seven starts for Waller, landing the Newcastle Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) in September 2016, but he could return to Australia later this year for a Queensland campaign. “He’s been in pre-training for six weeks and is due back here shortly,” Pike said. “He won’t be ready for the Auckland Cup so we’ll look to give him a couple of runs here a bit later and there’s a chance he could go to Brisbane for the Queensland carnival.”

Latta ponders Dijon Bleu targetTrainer Lisa Latta is still weighing up whether or not to run Dijon Bleu (Burgundy) in the Karaka 3YO Classic (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie on Saturday. If she does not run in the NZ$1,000,000 race she is likely to target the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa on February 10. “I’ll make a decision on Tuesday,” Latta said. “If it wasn’t for the big money at Ellerslie there wouldn’t be anything to decide. She would be going to Te Rapa to chase the Filly of the Year award.” Dijon Bleu’s half-brother by Proisir (Choisir) will be offered as Lot 497 at Karaka Book One.

NZB yearling sales to be televisedThe entirety of Karaka Book One will be televised live on a pop-up channel, Sky 263, while the full seven-day sale will also be streamed live on the New Zealand Bloodstock website and through its Facebook page. The entire Monday session will also be televised live on Racing.com along with other day's highlights. A half-hour sales preview show will also be televised on channel 263 before the commencement of selling on each of the four days of the Book One.

Woodville postponedYesterday’s Woodville race meeting was postponed with officials moving the meeting to Thursday following consultation with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the regional programming chairman. The fields will remain the same with scratchings reinstated.

Tea for two after Scott’s magic double

Milburn Creek Stud Manager, Scott Holcombe, is a busy boy with nine youngsters in boxes prepping for next month’s Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale and a further 22 lining up for Easter, but he took time out to watch at least two races on Saturday.

The first was the Group Three Castletown Wellington Cup over 3200m at Trentham, while the second was back across the pond for the BRC Memberships Handicap over 2200m at Doomben.

He wasn’t disappointed. Holcombe’s home-bred, Magic Chai, became the second Australian-bred Group winner on the star studded Trentham program by capturing the Wellington Cup - Enzo’s Lad had earlier taken out the Group One Telegraph Handicap - while a couple of hours later, Magic Chai’s half sister, Expertea, duly saluted at Doomben.

“Yes, it was a pretty good result … you don’t often breed a Group winner and a city winner out of the same mare on the same day,” Holcombe points out.

Holcombe purchased the Viscount mare, Chai - dam of both Magic Chai and Expertea, plus two other winners in Purreal and Rooibos Deluxe - for $32,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, but his actual association with the family dates back much further.

“I worked at Woodlands Stud for 11 years and was there when Chai herself foaled down and, for that matter, her sire, Viscount. Same goes for Chai’s full sister (Group One Queen of the Turf Stakes winner) Neroli,” Holcombe reveals.

“When Darley was selling Chai on the Gold Coast, I couldn’t resist.”

Sending Chai to Magic Albert, the mare produced a “beautiful foal, cracking colt” that Holcombe put through the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale where he was subsequently knocked down to Mark and Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm for $90,000.

Renowned pin-hookers, the New Zealand based Lyndhurst assigned the soon-to-be-named, Magic Chai, to the 2014 Inglis Sydney Ready To Race Sale but the colt was eventually passed in.

“We bought him home to New Zealand to give him a chance to come into his own,” Mark Treweek explains. “Milburn Creek does such a

great job with its yearlings and its always hard to buy one because everyone else is on them, but Magic Chai just needed time.

“As he matured he got stronger and we put him and another horse with Lance O’Sullivan where Magic Chai won a trial. Hong Kong purchased the other horse, but not Magic Chai, so I trained him for a few of his early starts. Things started getting busy with our sales prep though and he was sent on to Tony Pike who has done a great job with him.”

Only lightly raced, Magic Chai’s Wellington Cup was his fifth victory overall from just 18 starts and the 5YO is now likely to target the NZ$500,000 Group One Auckland Cup over 3200m at Ellerslie on 10 March.

“We’ll see how he pulls up over the next couple of days, but all things being equal, that’s where he is headed,” Treweek adds. “It was terrific to win the Wellington Cup … we have a lot of family in Wellington while my wife Shelley’s grandfather rode a couple of Wellington Cup winners before training the winner, Old Bill, back in 1940.

“We bred Zabeat that won the Wellington Cup in 2005 but it’s terrific to actually race the winner.

“Not that we thought we’d be doing that with Magic Chai … he’s by Magic Albert after all, out of a Viscount mare that won over 1300m and 1600m. We thought we might end up with a nice miler, but not a two miler!”

(Winner of four races over 1100m as a 2YO, Magic Albert won the Group Two Peter Pan Stakes over 1500m at three. Now standing at Kooringal Stud in NSW, Magic Albert has produced over 550 winners, 23 of them stakes winners and four at Group One level including Albert The Fat. Only one of the 23 has won up to 2100m)

Sending Chai to Al Maher the year after she produced Magic Chai, Holcombe ended up with a filly that was passed in by Milburn Creek

at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale, but was subsequently sold to Hancox Bloodstock for $23,000 via the Rheinwood Pastoral draft at the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, some six months later.

“(Milburn Creek owner) John Muir and (Rheinwood Pastoral owner) Ray Willis are great mates and Ray agreed to put her through his draft at the Nationals,” Holcombe adds.

Trained by former Champion jockey, Chris Munce, the filly was named Expertea and the Doomben win was her third from 11 starts, along with four placings, and connections believe she has a promising future.

“Chai is the only mare that I own outright, while I have three more in partnership with John (Muir),” Holcombe explains. “Chai has a Sizzling

filly at foot and is in foal to Holler. Sizzling was bred by Milburn Creek while, again, I had a lot to do with Commands - the sire of Holler - while I was at Woodlands.”

No matter where you go in the world, the name Frankel (Galileo) has become synonymous with thoroughbred excellence. The

jewel in the Juddmonte crown has, of course, already sired winners in all corners of the globe in his relatively short stud career, and has now supplied two session-toppers at this year's Cape Premier Yearling Sale after Patrick Bernard Shaw went to R3,000,000 ($308,296) for the filly out of the Fastnet Rock (Danehill) mare Wandering offered by Klawervlei Stud as Lot 172 on Sunday.

And in an illustration of the international appeal of Frankel, Shaw's Cape Town buy will first head to race in Singapore before moving on to Australia for a career in the paddocks. Shaw has now picked up two Frankels during the Cape Premier Yearling Sale, having also acquired the filly out of Mowaadah (Alzao) for R1,500,000 during Saturday's session.

"She'll go to Singapore to race and then on

to Australia to breed in due course," said Shaw. "But for the moment we'll leave both fillies here and see how they fill out. Hopefully the quarantine protocols will relax and then we can ship them out sooner.

"Frankel was a fantastic racehorse and he's had a fantastic start at stud and hopefully that carries on."

The filly shares her page with the likes of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sagamix (Linamix), Prix d’Ispahan (Gr 1, 1800m) victor Sageburg (Johannesburg) and the Group Two-winning, Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up Secret Gesture (Galileo).

Freeman's beautyJohn Freeman, who displayed his own

affections for Frankel when securing the sale-topping colt at R4,000,000 on Saturday, was back in action on Sunday to secure Lot 201, the first foal of South African champion mare Beach Beauty (Dynasty) for R2,500,000. The

By the Racing Post’s James Thomas @anz_news

Frankel filly headed to Singaporeson of Trippi (End Sweep), already named Wild Coast, was offered by Gaynor Rupert's Drakenstein Stud.

"With Beach Beauty being such a champion, how could you not want her son?" said Freeman. "Trippi was a champion sire too and I thought he was a very good first foal, and that's key. Beach Beauty was a small little mare but this colt is very robust. It looked like very wise breeding to me. I've bought her for a client who's giving the colt to his son as a birthday present!"

Being by Drakenstein's champion sire Trippi out five-time Group One winner Beach Beauty, the colt boasts obvious stallion potential, but Freeman noted that his quest for future sires was made all the more difficult by the fact that South Africa retires an incredibly small number of its own colts to stud each year.

"We've been looking for a son of Trippi that could go to stud for a long time," he said. "I manage 16 stallions, and five of those I bought as yearlings - including Dynasty - so that's my game, but we retire fewer colts to stud here in South Africa than anywhere else in the world. In fact, I've made a deliberate effort to prove that top South African racehorses make stallions."

Hong Kong continue spending spree

Cape Town debutants the Hong Kong Jockey Club dipped back into the market again during Sunday's session, when the operations buying team Nick Columb and Mark Richards secured a pair of colts by Captain Al (Al Mufti), the first of which fetched R1,800,000.

As the striking grey colt, catalogued as Lot 133, entered the ring auctioneer Andrew Miller told the audience: "You're the judges, this is your sale, I'm just the trumpeter so you tell me where you want to go," and it didn't take long for buyers to head straight for seven-figure territory.

"Given Captain Al's record he's an obvious choice for us," said Columb, "it's just a shame he's no longer with us anymore as we've come to the party very late, but in our view this colt was one of two very, very good Captain Al’s in this sale.

"He's a lovely horse, he's not tall but he's big and strong and obviously the mare's already done the job with two siblings by Captain Al so we're very happy to have got him. He ticked all the boxes, as they say!"

R1,400,000 during Sunday's session."Obviously we know the stallion, he was

a genuinely good horse, so we're keen to support him, provided we like the stock," said Angus Gold. "I liked this colt very much. We have six homebreds by him at the moment, we'll put four into training and might sell a couple. On the whole I've been very pleased with what I've seen by the sire and it's lovely to come here and see what he's producing from other people as that gives you the confidence to go back in and keep breeding to him."

The colt, named Los Rios and out of the Group Three winner Valdivia (Var), was offered by Highlands Stud, who also bred Soft Falling Rain himself.

"I thought this was an outstanding colt from the first time I saw him," continued Gold. "He's big and powerful and out of a good sprinting mare. Hopefully he'll have the size, strength and scope to go to Dubai if he's good enough. Now we just have to hope he can run. He came from a great farm so I'm delighted to get him."

Doyles score with RonaldoCape Thoroughbred Sale regulars Peter and

Ross Doyle were also among the internationals in action on Sunday, most notably when they

The colt, named I Am The Secret and offered by Klawervlei as agent, is out of Secret Of Victoria (Goldkeeper), a Group Two winner whose six foals to race have all won, including the top-level winners All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out, both of whom are also by Captain Al.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club also secured the other Captain Al colt (Lot 199) they identified when they parted with R700,000 ($71,906) for the Avontuur Farm offering.

"People in Hong Kong may not understand South African breeding yet but they can read a pedigree and can see the record of Captain Al so these colts will be well thought of," added Columb.

"We work predominantly on type, pedigree is important but we don't buy anything we don't like physically. They also have to show us they have a little bit of precocity because 88 per cent of races in Hong Kong are run over a mile or shorter so they have to have a turn of foot."

Shadwell show support for Soft Falling

The Mike De Kock-trained and Sheikh Hamdan-owned Soft Falling Rain (National Assembly) flew the flag for South African bloodstock around the world during his racing career, having gone on to land the Joel Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Newmarket and the Godolphin

Mile (Gr 2, 1600m) at Meydan after he'd won a Turffontein Group One as a juvenile.

The stallion took up stud duty at Wilgerbosdrift, and Shadwell have begun to throw their support behind him in the sales ring this week, having bought a filly for R500,000 on Saturday and a colt, catalogued as Lot 167, for

satisfied with the two days of trade."There's no point in ignoring the elephant

in the room, Mayfair Speculators were a really big buyer to lose," he said. "But it's been great to see the variety of buyers here, locals and internationals, and that's what really points to a new beginning for this sale.

"We'll miss Mayfair as a client but this is a time for new people to put their hand up and fill the void and I believe people are willing to do that.

"I'm hugely excited about the Hong Kong Jockey Club buying, that's wonderful for CTS but even better for the South African industry. The key for us now is to ensure they have a good experience getting this horses out of South Africa and to ensure they come back here next year and continue to purchase."

parted with R1,200,000 for Ronaldo, a son of Silvano (Lomitas) offered by Winterbach Stud as Lot 196.

The colt, who is out of the winning mare A Star For Maria (Noverre) and from the family of Canadian champion Never Retreat (Smart Strike), will be trained by Lee Newton, who aims to commence his training career from the Mornington training centre in August.

"He's a very nice horse and Lee Newton will be training him, Lee was mad about him," said Ross Doyle. "He's by a very good stallion, I've bought one or two by him over the years, and we like Noverre as a damsire too. He was a very good specimen."

"I've done my apprenticeship under the likes of Dean Kannemeyer, Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Hannon - that's how I met Ross and Peter Doyle," explained Newton. "We've bought two now this week, this colt and a son of Captain Al, and we're hoping to rent 20 boxes at Mornington."

FiguresDespite the efforts of the likes of Shaw,

Freeman and the Hong Kong Jockey Club all key market indicators showed significant year-on-year decreases, though not quite to the extent some had predicted in the wake of leading buyers Mayfair Speculators, the racing arm of troubled tycoon Markus Jooste, exiting the market.

A quick-thinking move by jockey Manoel Nunes sealed victory for the Victor Chan-trained Obrigado Mais (Husson) in the Spring Trophy

(MAC Gr 2, 1500m) at the Taipa racetrack on Saturday.

Sent out as equal favorite with the Peter Leyshan prepared Krystrump (New Trumps), Obrigado Mais was put into a great spot in the run in fifth place one off the fence as the field thundered into the back. However, by the 600 metre point Nunes had plenty of horse under him and was on the back of runners that were soon going to be giving ground.

In a quick move Nunes peeled out and sprinted quickly around the bend for home and was in full flight to sweep by the leaders at the 200 metres. Obrigado Mais crossed the line with a length and a quarter to spare over the fast-finishing Krystrump (Wayne Smith) who was again a little unlucky in the run, with

Turquoise Power (More Than Ready) running in third.

The win capped off the successful return to Macau racing for Nunes who was full of praise for the grey gelding after the race.

“This is a brilliant horse he is just flying,” he said.

“After riding him work he gave me so much confidence going into the race. He is a horse you can put anywhere in a race.

“I was in a great position early but down the side I wanted to improve and the horses I was following were not going to take me into the race. I had Wayne (Smith) on the other favourite Krystrump on my inside and I thought if he is lucky and gets a run through I’m in trouble, so it was better I got moving.

“The horse sprinted beautifully and as it turned out Krystrump was held up so we were lucky.”

Saturday’s win by Obrigado Mais made three straight wins for the grey son of Husson

By Harry Troy @anz_news

Tactical victory for Nunes in Spring Trophy

(Hussonet) who has been a real find for his owner Tam Vai Lam, a longtime supporter of the Macau Jockey Club.

Obrigado Mais is Portuguese for “thank you more” and Mr Tam certainly has plenty to be thankful for with Obrigado Mais’s seven wins and two placings from his 15 runs in Macau, including a win in the Winter Trophy (MAC Gr 2, 1800m) last month. After Saturday’s win Obrigado Mais earned close to HK$2,000,000 in prize money in the enclave.

Expensive Australian purchase Cathy’s Star (Sepoy) scored his maiden win in Saturday’s second feature of the day, the Singapore Turf Club Goodwill Cup (1200m).

Ridden by Luis Corrales, Cathy’s Star enjoyed the run of the race before hitting the line strongly to beat the fast finishing Northern Legend (Northern Meteor), with Tuhao Power (Conatus) running in third.

Cathy’s Star is by the former Australian champion sprinter in Sepoy (Elusive Quality) from the Made Of Gold (Green Forest) mare Academy Idol, who is also the dam of Meryl (Epaulette), the winner of the B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Doomben in December. The now four-year-old gelding was purchased for $460,000 dollars at the 2015 Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale no doubt as a stallion prospect.

“We bought him out of the UK as a 1200 metre sprint horse,” he said.

“He is a big striding horse and with the speed in the races here he was having trouble getting around the tight turns and was speedy cutting himself.

“We decided we would try to step him up in distance where the tempo was slower and he could get balanced in his stride and give him more confidence.

“Peter (Ho) gave him a lovely ride and he has pulled up with his legs clean so it was a great result.”

Benson with plenty of authority Saturday and on his time will have no trouble progressing up through the ranks over the longer distances.

Cathy’s Star commenced his racing career as Mandolize for Gerald Ryan at Rosehill. From seven starts he managed four placed efforts at tracks like Gosford and Newcastle before he was gelded and sold onto Macau.

Now in the care of last year’s champion trainer Sio Cheong, Cathy’s Star has managed a win and three placed efforts from only four starts in the enclave, and has proven himself just as adept on the sand surface.

The win was part of a winning treble on the day for Luis Corrales, who later scored on Master Of Cheers (Choisir) for the combined stable of Rambo Tse and K C Wong in the Class 3 & 4 over 1500 metres, and also Thar (Exceed And Excel) for trainer Danny Wong in the last of the day the Class 2 & 3 over 1200 metres.

Irish import Benson (Dark Angel) rewarded his connections and trainer Peter Leyshan with their patience with a superb all the way win in the Class 4 over 1800 metres.

Taken straight to the front by jockey Peter Ho, Benson was rated to perfection before sprinting away at the top of the straight for an easy win.

It’s been tough road for Benson who arrived in Macau with solid form over the sprinting distances in the United Kingdom. From 11 starts there when prepared by Lambourn-based Charles Hills, racing as Menai won two races and placed a further six times.

Since arriving in Macau in January of last year it’s been tough going for the son of Dark Angel (Acclamation) but according to Peter Leyshan there have been legitimate excuses.
