Over many centuries, artworks in western civilization have been focused on aspects of the teachings and narratives of Jesus Christ, his mother Mary and other saints, themes from the New Testament and our heritage in the Old Testament. The Christian churches have been principal sponsors for much of this art, and the Mandorla Art Award seeks to continue this tradition so that artists will continue to interpret and inspire us with the visual theology of our religious heritage. It is a pleasure to see our 2014 finalists bring to us such rich and challenging artworks. May they continue to stimulate those who view them with an enriched understanding of this year’s theme from 1Kings 19:11b-13 where Elijah meets God on Mt Horeb. Meetings with God are so often on mountains and are always life-changing!
Once again the number and quality of entries submitted has grown this year, with 16 international artists contributing artworks; despite the inherent complications in global transportation and foreign exchange rates, we are delighted to have received these entries. Though we have fewer youth entries we are thrilled to have two of our previous Youth Award winners exhibiting; Julian Poon and Emma Izstein. Thanks to our pre-selection panel, Connie Petrillo, Mary Moore and Rev Ryan Green who had the onerous task of discerning those who had a high quality of work and those who had achieved an expression of 1Kings 19:11b-13. A special thanks to our judges for the 2014 Award, Sr Jan Grey, John McDonald and Stephen Bevis.
Our gratitude to our patrons, sponsors and donors, and particularly our major sponsor St John of God Health Care – without their support the Mandorla Art Award would not be able to continue and flourish.
To the artists who submitted work for this award, thank you for your time, creative effort and consideration of our Biblical theme. To our finalists, congratulations to you all!
This Award would not be possible without the exceptional efforts of many people. To our Curator, Joy Legge and Assistant Curator Julia Robinson-White, thank you for your time, diligence and creative expertise. To our Vice Chairperson and founding member from 1985 Pat Toohey, thank you for your continued enthusiasm and guiding hand. To long term member, Treasurer, and spiritual leader Fr Chris Ross, thank you for your undying confidence and efforts. Maureen and Peter Sellick who diligently execute secretarial duties, your welcome expertise and support has been of real benefit to the working of the team. To Neil Ferguson, who once again has looked after the volunteers’ roster and added good humour to our outlook, thanks to you and to the volunteers that you encourage. Thanks to Audrey Welch for her part as our initial Professional Development officer and the workshops she developed for artists and teachers. Special thanks go to our wonderful designer, Leanda Chia, who has developed all our materials to a very high standard and continues to promote us online from afar.
Enjoy this wonderful award! dr angela McCarthyThe Mandorla Art Award Committee Chairperson
