Santa Anna underestimated the Texans. 90 minute battle.
Mexico wins, but Texans are encouraged to fight!

March 13, 1836—Fannin sent King to help families
escape to Goliad, then sent Ward to help King who was having trouble;
Ward & King fought; W escaped, K was captured & executed; disastrous for TX.

March 19, 1836—Fannin’s poor decision
making skills left him low on troops and unwilling to retreat to Victoria
Texans fight in square formation, are surrounded, forced to surrender, & taken to Goliad

The Goliad MassacreMarch 27, 1836--prisoners
have been told by Urrea that they will not be executed; SantaAnna orders a mass execution; Texans are marched out &
shot at close range. Those with skills are spared (“Angel of Goliad”).

The Battle of San JacintoApril 21, 1836—Mexican army is
taken by surprise; Vince’s Bridge has been burned, so there
is no way to retreat. Texans WIN in 18 minutes. Santa Anna is later found
in a soldier’s uniform, but his life is spared in exchange for TX independence

The Runaway Scrape
Families betweenColorado and Brazos Rivers hear Santa Anna’s army is coming and Sam Houston is retreating, so they flee to the Sabine River, burning all supplies along the way. After the Alamo, before San Jacinto.
