Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Inner Journey

Expanding your interestsSelect one of the interests you brainstormed in your journal and discover the different paths that could be explored. Use the model demonstrated in class to help you.

Global Warming

Natural disasters

Water risingGetting too hot

Temperature raising

Habitats getting ruined

The spring in Greenland is longer than it used to be because of the heating of the earth

Why cars have so much carbon dioxide in them that you then let out…

Why is this a problem/issue?

• You have chosen this problem for a reason.• How does it affect your life or those around you?• How does it affect your feelings or emotions?• Why do you think it is important?

Why do you feel a responsibility for this problem/issue?

Inner Journey

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Chemicals in the bodyThis problem doesn’t really affect me but somehow it does, but I know many other people even at our school are affected. It affects my life by my family watches out what shampoo we get, nobody in my family uses perfume and hardly ever make up, because of all the chemicals in there. It affects other people because not many here in Switzerland knows about it, so they use shampoo with chemicals, they use perfume, they use make up, and many other stuff with chemicals. It doesn’t really affect MY feelings but when I think about my friends who use all these things especially the shampoos I think about, when they grow up they might get cancer.I think it is important because it can make bad stuff in your body which means the body might not work probably when you grow up, you might get cancer, and many other illnesses that will never go away!

REFLECTION 1khjOur actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? •Are you happy with this development? •You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? •Why are they in your group? •Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?•What did you think about your first week of collaboration?

My topic is Chemicals in the body that come through cosmetics, trash, etc. My original thought was chemicals that come through cosmetics which is also what I am working on mostly, but now I also see the chemicals also come through trash, like if you build a house on some trash it can give you asthma. I am happy with this development. In my group there is me, Paula, Liv and Carlota, they are in my group because they care about the same thing as I do, I think we can work well because it is something as I said we care about, and we’re good friends, we can be able to work well if we concentrate and we do so we already got pretty far with what should be done, we already know a lot. I think our first week of collaboration went great, because we worked all the time and didn’t spend time chatting about useless things.

Developing Lines of Inquiry

You have defined your problem/issue in relation to Form, Function, Causation andResponsibility.Look at the remaining two Concepts to clarify your lines of inquiry

Connection How is it connected to other issues/problems?It is connected to serious illnesses, allergies, cancer, etc.

Perspective What are other points of view?Chemical can be good, they can save life's, and are found in medicines.

Searching and Collecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

People to whom we spoke:

Name: Mary-Jane

From this person we learned that there are chemicals in water and that was the first time I heard about Parabens.

Name: Sihl City

From this person we learned that Dr. Hauschka isn’t even that good

Surveys we created and distributed

The group surveyed: Grade 5Number of people surveyed: Whole grade 5

Important conclusion we can make from the results: None of the 5th graders know about chemicals n their body products.

Important information from our advisor: Websites: Weleda, Dr.hauschka,

Page 11: Mai's Exhibition Journal

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think differently:

There are two different chemicals called, Parabens and Phthalater, these two chemicals are the most known and dangerous chemicals.

The are ideas I had about our problem/issue before AND I still have now:Chemicals are bad and harm us. When we use shampoo with perfume and chemicals and other things like that. Also when you use make up there comes loads of chemicals in your body. There is no sign in Switzerland that says, that there is no chemicals in.

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us and we still wonder about:

Why is there no sign in Switzerland that shows there is no chemicals in a product?

We would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

The chemicals are BAD for you body!

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 12: Mai's Exhibition Journal

Think of Solutions.ACTION!

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issue

Here is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the box to find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious. S T R E T C H your imagination!

- Presentation for teachers : Tell them about chemicals.- Go to Sihl city tell people not to buy products with

chemicals.- Show people products not to buy.- Tell everybody that it is important.- Posters!- Make a website!

Our actions can lead to positive change.

CHOOSING ACTIONIs your action S.M.A.R.T.?

Specific

Measureable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-bound

Specific •Is your action clear•Does everyone understand about how your action will happen?•Have you covered 5 “W”s and the “H”?Measurable•How will you know your action has worked?Attainable•Will you be successful taking this action?Relevant•Does this action actually relate to your problem?Time-bound•Will you have enough time to implement your action?

We can make a

difference

Page 14: Mai's Exhibition Journal

Make your Action Plan

How will your action affect your problem?

People will know that it is important.

Who needs to be convinced?

Everybody who uses make-up, perfume, shampoo with chemicals.

What objections might you come up against?

People might ask, “why should I not use my shampoo, perfume and make up” “I don’t agree”.

How can you overcome those objections?

By telling the people it is true and that it is important, that they don’t use so many chemicals.

What resources will you need?

BWC, Beauty Without Cruelty, Dr Hauschka and results of conversations and emails. Statistics.

Who can help you? Mary-Jane (Georgia’s mum, chemist), Paula’s uncle (Works in DOVE), Sihl City Person (Works with telling people what to use without chemicals).

Where should you begin?

Surveys, Interviews.

What will be your next step?

Put it all together.

Who will do what to achieve your action?

I will talk about chemicals in make-up perfume, shampoo, etc in a presentation to adults.

Our actions can lead to positive change.

REFLECTIONActing and SharingWe can make a difference

Our action was presenting to some of the teachers they were very interested. Everybody in my group thought it was very successful, and we were very surprised after how much the teachers were into it. I think it was successful because many of the teachers came to talk to us about what products they should use. And they said that they were going to check their own products when they came home.I enjoyed overall just doing it, and speaking in front of the teachers with my group.

Exhibition Night Reflection

Our actions can lead to positive change. The exhibition went really great and it was fun presenting

everything we had been working on for so long and also showing our parents who were really excited about coming and watching it and after they were really surprised of how much we had learned.I felt really good after we finished and I just thought, “We did it!”I thought it was easier doing it during the night for adults, than during the day for students, because the adults understood more.

Page 17: Mai's Exhibition Journal

My final message to everyone is…

After this exhibition I want everyone to know how important it is that you use the right products and that you know what happens if you don’t. I also want them to go home and think about what they were just told. They shouldn’t just think “Ok I just went to a presentation about chemicals and now its over, it was just kids having to present something for a school project. Its over now so why should I care.” I just want everyone to know it is important that you use the right products.
