SECTION 1Introduetion - The background
The incidence of in-situ wood decay on existing windows is a commonproblem associated with timber joinery all over Europe.Yet due to the lack of the correct repair techniques, products andmaintena nce budget constraints. The Housing sector of many public authorities are choosing to completelyreplace existing windows, as a cost-effective method of solving maintenanceproblems.
An erctensive survey undertaken by Window Care B.V. all over Europe and inpart icular Hol land, U.K. and Belgium indicated that:
- On average 95 % of the timber replaced was unaffected by wood decay.
- Only 5 % of timber showed any sign of decay.
- There are environmental problems associated with the disposal of paintedtimber windows and subsequent disposal of UPVC windows by burning. With ever increasing environmental concerns and the need to conserve theearth natural resources there is increasing awareness all over Europe aboutthe need to devise advanced repair techniques and conservation methodsof preserving existing joinery.
Some six years ago the "Window Care 8.V." company in cooperation with anumber of independent maintenance experts instigated a researchprogram me cal led "Last ing preservat ion".
The main objective of the research programme wasto develop an economicalmethod of t reat ing exist ing windows, using pract ical repair techniques, highqual i ty products, which wi l l reduce maintenance costs, and minimise theneed for complete replacement of existing joinery.
In 1989 the Window Care System was introduced in the Netherlands and hasnow become a market leader in the repair, in-situ preservation andconservation of existing joinery.
Many authori t ies in the Netherlands has concluded that:
- Window Care System is more cost effective compared to the traditionalmethods of repair.
- A substant ial savings can be made by upgrading the qual i ty of exist ingwindows affected by in-situ wood decay compared to the completereplacement.
- "Spl iced t imber" is more durable using the Window Care productscompared to the tradi t ional methods of repair .
- Maintenance contractors became more professional when trained byWindow Care B.V. company,
- The performance of the paint system is considerably enhanced using theWindow Care System.
trlwlNDowc \REtrNS Y S T E M S
The success of Window Care in the Netherlands has prompted an enormousresponse from many European countries where Window Care B.V. is nowvery active.
However, Window Care B.V. chose a step by step approach, aimed notprimarily at increasing the company's turnover, but successful "problem-solving" by providing a high level of personal service to specifiers'
In early 1990, the company conducted an in-depth survey of the u.K.maintenance market sector, and was overwhelmed by the high demand forqual i ty conservat ion and repair techniques for exist ing joinery.
The high level of demand for Window Care products led to the establismentof WINDOW CARE SYSTEMS LTD in the U.K., a company dedicated toproviding a high level of personal service to specifying authorities, as well assupplying high qual i ty products.
Window Care B.V. is devoting enormous resourcesto research anddevelopment to cont inuously upgrade the qual i ty of exist ing products, todevelop more innovat ive products and advanced repair techniques.
The high qual i ty of the products is not the sole cr i ter ia, which determines theend-result .
Experience has shown that a high level of t raining for the operat ives isessent ial to achieve the desired end-result .
The purpose of this Guide is to provide an introduct ion to the commonmaintenance problems and some in-sight into the Window Care products.
Maintenance specifiers are advised to contact WINDOW CARE SYSTEMS LTDfor a more detai led explanat ion and a pract ical demonstrat ion beforecommencing work.

with Window Care products
Allow all repairs with the window Care Dry Flex to dry completely before anysurface preparation prior to finishing.
It is advisable to ensure that the timber surface is dry (moisture contentbefow 18o/ol. and free from surfacecontaminat ion.
Avoid prolonged exposure of bare wood to atmospheric moisture.A good surface preparation is essential before finishing.
In general it is advisable to use a flexible solvent based primer, beforefinishing with a vapour permeable / microporous solvent based or waterbased top-coat.
A test application is always advisable to check the depth of colour achievedand the quality of application before commencing work.
The proper choice of glazing putties / mastics is very important
