Commodore’s Message:

May was a great month for our sailing club. The finishing

touches were put on the deck to open up the lakeside of

the BoatHouse including full length steps and extra open-

ings to the beach. After the treated wood has cured we’ll

add a coat of sealant.

Our first workday of the year proved to be a great success.

Cleanup around the grounds, setting wake buoys, maintenance of equipment, prepar-

ing boats for kid’s classes and getting the place ready for summer were priority. I was

called away for a family emergency but later was told everything went as planned.

Thanks to all who showed up. Your dedication and hard work are appreciated.

At the monthly membership meeting for May we had a great potluck and the taco bar

was a big hit with everyone attending the meeting. We were honored by the presence

of two new members, Gary and Jeanna Miller. They look forward to meeting all TSC

Members and getting involved in our club activities. The program for June will be a re-

view of “Safety on the Water” presented by the OHP and the potluck theme will be

“Summer Time”. Thanks to Jim Madsen, Vice Commodore and David Gray, Rear Com-

modore for their hard work.

Speaking of programs, if you missed the May meeting you really shortchanged your-

self. Paul Reynolds and Jerry Lojka presented “Captain, my captain’, not to be con-

fused with the poem cited in the movie “Dead Poets Society” starring Robin Williams.

Their presentation on how to become a certified instructor and licensed captain were

worthy of an award. And both Paul and Jerry were rewarded with the speaker’s award,

a TSC monogramed coffee cup, for their superb presentations.

The Leukemia Cup Regatta is schedule for June 2nd

and 3rd

. It’ll be a grand weekend of

sailing, food, silent auction and music. Jim Madsen, Vice Commodore and his band will

perform a memorable evening of Blues and other genre on Saturday night; you won’t

want to miss being there. However, Judy and I will miss this year’s regatta to celebrate

our 50th wedding anniversary and we’ll toast you and your successful fund raising

event.

Our next membership meeting is

June 16th. Please plan to at-

tend; Gary and Jeanna and the

rest of us will all be looking for

you.

Keep calm, sail on!!

Potluck: h-m main dishes; n-s vegies; t-z appetizers/fruit; a-g desserts/breads;

Our program will be “Safety on the Water.” Dennis Dickens who is our speaker in June

Boating safety jumps to the front page in the summer months as more boaters head out on the wa-ter, there are more opportunities for accidents to happen. Sometimes with fatal results. Join us for the June meeting where Trooper Dennis Dickens will discuss all aspects of staying safe on the water. This in-cludes any and all required safety equipment to be on board a vessel, rules on right of way, register num-bers for a vessel, safe night operations, and what is a float plan.

He will also talk about scenarios with a variety of emergencies, and what the plan of action should be when things go wrong. This is a program that you don't want to miss!

Our May meeting was fun and informative. David Gray provided amazing decorations. The food was good

as always and our cast of presenters Jerry Lojka, Paul Reynolds, and Jim Chapman. They said, “Certifications

are for more than just to frame and hang on your wall. They are an important way to further your sailing

knowledge, become more skilled, have access to boats in chartered fleets, and spread the love of sailing to

others.” Their presentation told us how to go through the process to become a certified instructor all the

way up to becoming a licensed captain. Thanks Jerry, Paul and Jim for an informative evening.

17th year of Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse Sailing Camps

Only one space in each camp is still open. Register on Website:

Two Kids Sailing Camps will be held again this year in June. The dates are June 4-8 with Jerry

Lojka as principal instructor and June 18-22 with Phil Moershel as principal instructor. The

June 4-8 camp is nearly filled already!

We will need YOUR help this year, experience is not necessary! Classes are held from 9am

until 3pm with an hour for lunch. PLEASE try to help us as it provides additional security at

the BoatHouse and for the children on the water. Bring your PFD and lunch.

Paul Reynolds will be Principal Instructor for the Intermediate Camp from June 28-30, same

hours. He will need help as well as Mary Anne Secrist, principal instructor for the Adult (14

and up) Small Boat Sailing Class scheduled on July 10-14, primarily in the evenings.

Discover Oklahoma has discovered the

Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse Kids Sailing Camps!

We have been notified that the Discover Oklahoma TV show will be doing a segment

about the Kids Sailing Camps this summer. The production crew have plans to be at the Boat-

House on Friday, June 8 for the final day of Camp I according to Principal Instructor Jerry

Lojka.

As always, Friday is the busiest day with the test review in the morning and the kids

getting their boats ready for their final sailing trip. Parents, siblings and other relatives are en-

couraged to attend in time to have lunch with the kids before their final sail and going out on

the pontoon or safety boats to watch the kids close up.

While the students and instructors are on the water following lunch, the volunteers

clean up the BoatHouse and set up chairs to be ready for the awards ceremony once the kids

bring their boats ashore and all the boats and equipment are cleaned and stored away. We

need lots of help for these duties! Hopefully we can have a few strong helpers from TRI-OKC

and the NAVY CHIEFS AT TINKER.

We aren't sure when the show will be broadcast but they will let us know so we can put

our TV’s on record should we not be around when the show is on. The program will also be

available online at the Discover Oklahoma website.

Dear Friend, May 27, 2018 This is a fundraising letter.

Next weekend my daughter Marie and her friend David will sail with me at Lake Thunderbird in our little sailing club’s Leukemia Cup Regatta. Last year we raised over $3000, my part about $500, for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Lorrie has organized a silent auction.

We started this regatta in order to support a club member whose young grandson fought a terrifying battle with lymphoma, and also because the initial organizer wanted to host a BIG regatta and par-ty, with music, dancing, and LARGE corporate sponsorship. Now in our 3rd regatta we’re still small, there’s no Chesapeake Oil banner and we haven’t improved our dancing one single step. However, because of supporters like you, that grandson is 11 years old, healthy, and about to take our beginner sailing camp!

The year after we started the Leukemia Cup, and after more lab draws and tests than I can count, I found myself in a hospital room squirming under a resi-dent as he jammed a double lumen catheter into the side of my neck. Over the next three months I had 8 sessions of plasmapheresis, a mildly medieval procedure with a centrifuge spinning out the heavier plasma cells of my blood, including the proliferated immu-noglobulin M, prime culprit in the ultra-rare Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Walden-strom's Macroglobulinemia.

In the meantime, I entered a clinical trial of the drug Ibrutinib at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. I arrive every 3 months for blood tests and the occasional bone marrow or CT, and pick up my daily dose of this amazing and specifically-acting drug. My severely enlarged spleen is now normal, IgM levels are below the threshold for plasmapheresis, and I’m no longer anemic. I breath easy.

There is a plaque on the wall at the Cancer Institute, showing the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society gave over $15,000,000 in support. Research is ongoing and expensive. A friend of mine who has Mantle Cell Lymphoma asked his 80 year old hematologist why he hadn’t retired. He replied that “... in his entire career there has never been a more exciting and hopeful time to be a blood doctor!”

Highlights from the TSC Board Meeting on 5-19-18

Lorrie Sylvester, Secretary

Secretary’s Highlights

TSC is busy! Commodore Cup races weekly; great programs at monthly meetings (Thanks Jerry and Paul for your expertise on April

meeting – riveting information about skippering and becoming a sailing instructor. Thanks again to David Gray for the great theme

and décor...and to all for the food. Summertime is upon us...and with that, our theme for the June 16 potluck is

“Summertime...the living is easy....”. Think picnic and summer fun. Program will be “Boat Safety”---something that should be on all

of our minds. July and August will continue with summer themes with Boats, Blues and Barbecue in July once again featuring our

own Jim Madsen and his group and the program will be Phil’s Great Seagoing Adventure! In August we will gather for Cheeseburg-

ers in Paradise...sort of island theme. Lorrie will be making up some flyers to disperse to boats at the Marina....and you can use

them to invite some friends and sailing enthusiasts who might enjoy the summer comradery. David Gray will invite the Tri-Athletes

to join us for the summer fun.

The treasurer is taking good care of our funds – we have over $12,500 in dedicated funds. Jim Madsen is working on a T-Shirt de-

sign so that we can have some neat shirts for our different events...to promote TSC. Lorrie completed and submitted the US Sail-

ing Roster of contacts for TSC this year which includes: US Sailing Liaison: Phil Moershal; Youth Sailing: Paul Reynolds; Program-

ming Contact: Mary Ann Secrist; Race Regatta: Jim Waller; and Communications Lead: Lorrie Sylvester

Classes are and will be going on with youth classes beginning in June. Youth classes are almost full! Mary Anne is ordering T-shirts

for volunteers to wear during the classes so that folks can identify the instructors and helpers – LTEF may help...working on logos.

Discussed having a brief meeting for volunteers so that all know the Safesport rules for ensuring student safety.

We will be considering additional lights and possibly cameras as we had a kayak stolen after thieves cut through the back fence.

Please all be vigilant!

LEUKEMIA CUP – AUCTION SNEAK PEAK!!! ONLINE BIDDING IS OPENT AT www.32auctions.com/wwwLLSTSCauction2018

Leukemia Cup is approaching quickly! Lots of neat items for the auction, and we could still use more beer and wine donations for

the beer/wine pull! ($10 donation for a disguised beer/wine...good quality!). Also, see the many items we have to offer so far....if

you wish to bid on one of these items early, let Lorrie know. Onsite Bidding ends Saturday evening, June 2 by 8:00pm. If you

want to make an early bid, contact Lorrie via email - See More Auction Items on pages 8 and 9.

The Fleet Captain—About Racing

Jim Waller

2018 Commodore’s Cup Racing

If you are expecting to participate in the 2018 Commodore’s Cup Racing, please take a few minutes to

look at the Deed Of Gift. It’s located on www.thunderbirdsailingclub.org. Look about half way down the

left edge menu that is on most of the pages.

The Deed of Gift specifies that the competition is open to club members in good standing. Two fleets

are available: Cruising and Spinnaker. You will be asked to state in which fleet you are racing at the begin-

ning of the year to help with the score keeping. Please notice that those who do not race are scored as finish-

ing after those who did race. That is, showing up for the races is important if you want a shot at the trophy.

Racing has begun with our first race taking place, last March 21st. We will race every Wednesday,

depending on weather, until some time into late October.

All communications will be via text message. If you would like to be added to ( or removed from) the

message list, send a text to Jim Waller at 580-320-1551.

Renewing your TSC membership:

For those who have responded with your annual renewal payment, Thank You! However, for those who have yet to send theirs in, it is very disappointing to go to my mailbox and find noth-ing there. It has been slow going for membership renewals this year and I am hoping that if you are among those who have yet to return yours, that you will consider doing so. We really need your support. Thanks!!! If you have not received your renewal, or perhaps misplaced yours, please get in touch with me. Thank you for all your support J Delinquent TSC Membership Renewals It is never too late to renew your membership. Sadly, I still have several members who have not renewed their memberships for the current year. This makes it difficult to keep our budget goals and it makes my vol-unteer job harder having to personally remind you. If you have not taken care of the current year’s renewal, please do so now. We really need you and we desperately need your financial support. Please. If you have any questions about your membership, please contact me. Thanks.
