Joint Active Membership
Back in 2012 the Board of Directors approved a Joint
Active Membership status.
With a normal Active Membership, the person who applied is the active member, that person’s spouse is then automatically an Associate
member.
Any active member can now apply to switch their membership
to Joint Active status, where both will be considered Active Members. It is still only one membership, with one vote per membership, but either party can exercise that right. Both parties would then also be able to sign into our new website as Active Members, and apply for White
Building functions etc.
This is not at all mandatory, just
an option that is being offered.
If switching your membership to
Joint Active is something that interests you, contact Barb in the
office for the application.

Green Turtle Cay Invaded!
NOLSC Invades Green Turtle Cay
In keeping with a long standing tradition which I understand dates back to our club founder George Hinterhoeller, a large group of NOLSC members were seen
walking the streets and frequenting the bars of Green Turtle Cay Bahamas.
Shirley and I, along with Tim and Regis (Kinsail) took a ferry over from Treasure Cay for the day to visit Kathy and Mike ( Valkyria), Ron and Debbie (Red Stripe)
and almost locals Russ and Debbie (Penguin and Sea Turtle).
Apparently it was quite common during the week for locals to say “ you must be
the Niagara on the Lake group” as they walked by.
It was a great day with one small incident, as you can see by the photos Mike had to be helped out of the bushes by Kathy and Regis. We are not sure if it was the
Goombay Smash or the Bahamian beer which contributed to the fall.

Hello Everyone!
I am looking forward to Spring and another boating season as I am sure most of you are as well. We had a
fairly mild winter compared to the last two winters. However, I have had enough just the same. Bring on
the sunshine and warm weather.
It has been a busy winter in the clubhouse as the new deck nears completion and the newly sanded floors
are stained and sealed. What a wonderful club house we will have when all the work is completed.
As we move into another boating and social season at the club, I would like to remind everyone that the
Commodore’s Ball will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on York Road, NOTL on April 16, 2016. Tickets
are available through the office until April 1, 2016. It should be a wonderful evening. The band A Simple
Gesture will be playing.
The Spring AGM is coming up! Please remember to give your proxy to a like minded
member if you can not attend.
I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

WELCOME EW OLSC MEMBERS
Please welcome the following new 2015 members to NOLSC.
JOIT ACTIVE MEMBERS
RICK & JAIS CORVIO – they need no introduction!
SYLVAI & LISA BRILLO
Lisa (seen in the blue dress) and Sylvan own a sailboat called Escape V
and have been at our Club since 2008. Their two sons, both, attended our
junior sailing programme. Their daughter also enjoys sailing. Many of you
have met their family on Club cruises where they, spontaneously, often
break into song. Sylvan also, crews on Spitfire in our Wed. night racing
programme.
ACTIVE MEMBER
JOH WILLEY
John has a long history of enjoying NOLSC from junior sailing to family boating
to racing over the years. He currently owns Mariah, a Bluenose, which is docked
along Nelson St. John is hoping to teach his 9 year old daughter to love sailing.
ASSOCIATE MEMBERS
JOA WRIGHT
Joan had been around our club for the last 3 years serving on race committees for
Wed. night, Sunday racing, Shark Home Comers, CanAm Regatta, and Niagara
Cup. In Sept of 2014 she decided if she was going to be on the water she might
just as well buy her own boat. Joan and her husband Geoff Hazell purchased their
first boat, a Catalina 30 last fall. Sweet Addie was christened in June and was
docked on the wall all summer.
DAVID KERR
David and his wife Karen recently sold their cottage up north and so have more
time to spend on their C & C 27 sloop Mach II. David has been around NOLSC
since he was a child as his father was a founding member of our Club.
MICHAEL DAVIES
Michael grew up in NOTL where he learn to love sports, especially soccer
ending up coaching the sport for years. He now owns a sail-boat called Missed
Stress. He would like to become a full member and become more involved.
Page 6 t h e m a i n s h e e t
A mild winter means no ice. Water levels are already at spring levels, the canal will open soon and the tempera-tures are rising. All an indica-tor of an early launch. Now it’s up to everyone to get ready in a timely fashion. Especially
those on the perimeter.
I feel it necessary to talk about paper work at this time of year. I wish I didn’t have to but people still do not return
contracts. This year we also
require a copy of your insur-ance policy. There’s been some discussion regarding not launching boats until all paper work is in our possession. The same rule will remain in place that if we do not have payment of invoices 30 days from bill-ing, your dock will be released
to the still long waiting list.
I’m just full of sunshine eh? Just send money and docu-
ments and we’re done! Easy.
On the lighter side…… while
in FLA in January I flew on a
C-47 (DC3) warbird that flew
in D-Day. In order to board
the aircraft, I had to become a
member of the “Valiant Air
Command”. I have since got
my commission and am now
Colonel Edward McIlroy.
Now… no no, you don’t have
to address me as such or sa-
lute……Ed will still do.
Commodore’s Comments
To begin, I would just like
to wish all the members of
NOLSC a Happy New Year
and a good start to the 2016
season.
I would also like to thank all
of the board members,
volunteers and the
employees for the hard work
that they put into managing
the Sailing Club last year.
Spring has sprung and our
club will soon awaken from
its winter slumber with boats
being readied for launch and
Sunday Racing.
As another winter has passed
we have lost some more
members; our thoughts and
fond memories go to
George Greenberger – Life
Member, Opal Lawrason and
Edie Doyle – sailors
who have not been at the
club for some time but who
will be missed.

Cruising ews
Cruising 2016
As another sailing season
begins, we look forward to
some of our favourite
reciprocal cruises.
This year we will be
cruising to Port Dalhousie
Yacht Club (DYC) for one
night June 11, 2016 for our
Shake Down Cruise.
July 1-4 we will be heading
to Ashbridges Yacht Club
(ABYC) for Canada Day
and Fourth of July
Celebrations.
July 30– Aug. 1 we will be
headed to Etobicoke Yacht
Club (EYC) for the Civic
Holiday.
Sept 3-5 we will be heading
to Lakeshore Yacht Club
(LSYC) for the Labour
Day weekend. This will be
the first time we have done
a reciprocal cruise with
LSYC and we look forward
to visiting their club.
Cruising is a great way to
meet your fellow club
members and see the dif-
ferent clubs around the
lake. For those that are not
familiar with cruising,
reciprocal cruising allows
you to sail to clubs you
wouldn’t necessarily go to
on your own either due to
the distance or being unfa-
miliar. Cruising with a
group of people gives you
some added security know-
ing that there are other
people out on the water
with you.
Please sign up in advance
with Barb in the office for
the cruises you wish to
attend.
It is important to
remember that if you sign
up for a cruise, and cannot
make it, please inform the
office as soon as possible.
Karen and Dave Jones will
be our Cruise
Coordinators for 2016. If
you would like to help with
any of the cruises, please
contact them. As you all
know there is a lot of work
that goes into the cruising
and social functions. Many
hands are always appreci-
ated. Please watch out for
our cruising flyers prior to
the cruises for more details.
If you have any questions
or concerns, please contact
me.
Here is to a great sailing
season 2016!

BIG BOATS
Hey Honey, do you
want to buy a bigger
boat?
That conversation seems to be happening all around the sailing community. Larger sailboats are becoming far more common. Ten or fifteen years ago a 30 ft. sailboat was considered to be an average to large size boat, not any more. Ed showed me a copy of the Mainsheet from February-March 1976 “Doug and Marg Minor have joined the big boat fleet with a new C&C 27”. How times
have changed.
While purchasing and own-ing a larger boat is certainly a desirable and fun thing to do, larger boats present a challenge at our club. Our club always does our best to accommodate our member’s new boats but it has happened in the past and very well may happen again in the future where physically we do not have
room.
In our General By-Laws and in our NOLSC Policies we
address the procedure for
dock allocations. I would suggest anyone who is considering a larger boat to get a copy of these and make yourself aware of them ahead of time. When each of you became an active member, in your acceptance letter it was stated you were guaranteed a slip for your boat. That still holds true, but it was for the boat you had docked at the club when you submitted your application, it does not apply to any boat you may
purchase in the future.
A few suggestions you may want to consider in the beginning of your boat search. This is not an all-inclusive list but a starting point. Check with our club manager to see if the boat you are considering would fit into your current slip. It is not always as simple as can I get it into the slip with a shoe horn. As we were reminded a while ago, storms and surges do happen along with the boat damage that goes with them. If a new boat would fit in your current slip it makes
the process a lot easier.
If the slip is deemed to be
too small you have to submit
a letter to the office requesting a dock change by December 31st for considera-tion for the following sailing season. The procedures are all covered in the NOLSC Policies section on dock
assignments.
In our office we have a large stack of applications for new boats wanting a slip at NOLSC. It is a desirable position for our club to be in,
of course, not a desirable
position for a boat owner wanting a slip. Of course our members have preference in the dock allocation
procedure over nonmembers.
As I mentioned above, the club will always do it’s best to accommodate members boats. It never has been or never would be our intent to turn members away. A little bit of legwork up front may save a member the awful situation of having a new
boat with no slip to put it in.
David Bruce,
Membership Director.
Page 14
FLEET EWS
At this writing, we are three
weeks away from our first
river race, which almost
certainly will be sailed on
schedule given the complete
lack of ice in the river or
lake. That said, I expect a
terrific turnout for the
Furlined and Seven Year
Series this year. So get on
down to the yard and get
those boats in the drink.
Last year’s changes to the
Sailing Instructions were
generally well received, so
for 2016, we’ll be sticking
with the same basic format
but with minor changes.
These would include a start-
ing location below the
leeward mark for the PHRF
boats. So download, print,
and read those SI’s carefully.
New this year will be the
introduction of a Vanguard
15 fleet. The Vanguard 15 is
one of the strongest double
handed one design racing
classes in the US, and is a
staple on the US college
racing circuit. They will
have their own Friday
evening series, as well as an
invitational regatta at the end
of August. Also new this
year, will be a Tuesday
evening sport boat series.
The J70’s have signed on to
this series, but other sport
boat fleets are welcome as
well. For those feeling a lit-
tle less sporty, Tuesday
evenings also offers non
spinnaker racing. This low
key, low stress racing night
has been growing in
popularity in recent years
and offers an alternative to
Wednesday nights.
Don’t fail to circle July 9th
on your sailing/party
calendar. This day will have
something for everyone, so
there’s no excuse not to be at
the Club for the day. It is of
course, Niagara Cup, as well
as our 2nd Race to Nowhere.
We expect increased
participation from Youngs-
town boats for both these
events. So it should be a
great day on the water for
everyone. The evening
naturally is the ever popular
steak roast party. So no
matter what your thing is,
race, cruise, or social, the 9th
is a day you won’t want to
miss.
And finally, YYC has de-
cided to renew the C&C
Owners Regatta, now
renamed the C&C River City
Rally and Race, scheduled
for August 12-14. Last time I
looked, there were still lots
of C&C’s lying in our basin,
So pay attention to yyc.org
as the details are announced.
From the sound of it, it
promises to be much more
than just a sailboat race.
See you on the water.

Dinghy Dock Etiquette
There have been a lot of arti-
cles on Dinghy Docking and
the proper etiquette when it
come to tying up your din-
ghy.
Last year our staff cleaned
up the area near the A-frame
at the end of Shark Alley in
order for our members to tie
up their dinghies. There
seemed to have been a surge
of new dinghies purchased
over the past few years and
there was a need to create
more space.
A couple of things to re-
member when tying up your
dinghy.
*Use only one line...do not
tie both stern and bow.
*Always leave your out-
board down. A raised out-
board can damage other
boats.
*Use a long painter line, so
others may push your din-
ghy aside to nose up closer
to the dock. If you use a
short painter, others will
have to climb over your
dinghy.
*If there are only a few
cleats on the dock, tie a
loop in the end of your
painter to allow more
looped painters on a cleat.
*If there are other dinghies
at the dock, try to tie your
painter below the earlier
boats. This will prevent
someone having to untie
and retie your dinghy.
