JULY 12 2019 VOL. 4MAIN SHEETCommodore’s Comments {The kids are alright!}

Greetings from our family to yours – nice of summer to finally arrive, don’t you think? And just when it shows up, America’s birthday, the traditional mid-point, has come and gone.

What a magnificent week. The fireworks were a literal sight to behold; as usual, Kutsch and his crew did a bang up job – pun intended! – and then some! The Knopf boys put on quite a show over in Dorn’s bay the next night as well. The parties were great, and the LBSS had a successful fundraiser on Saturday night to cap it all off. Wasn’t it the height of joy, to see all the old friends returning to the lake, as many of them have done for year upon year and decade upon decade?

All of that, and all the “kids” who are now at least approaching middle age and with kids of their own. Then, the passing of icons like Cullen Barr and Betty Hiller; it does give one pause. On the one hand the circle of life continues, on the other hand it’s an honor to serve and follow in the foot-steps and carry the burgee and maintain the legacy.Speaking of icons. Today. Were you out there, did you see the sight on Sunday morning? By way of back story, the 1725 was long the Stein boat and Andy would sail it holiday week. Well, today Andy was on Doug Dorn’s old boat, smiling his way across the line after a long race. It was a tough wind direction for golden pond, and on the MC course the 1725 was struggling mightily, well off the pace,

soldiering on until the end. The 1725 is now owned by one of our newest members, Ted Kennedy. The cool part and the point of the story? Well, that’s what happened after the finish. Fully half an hour later, there was Mr. Kennedy, still out there sailing the 1725 around. Why? Because Mr. Haeger was following along in his 2451, giving pointers, coaching the newbie in an uber-sporting effort to narrow the gap.

If that’s not an utterly perfect example of the very best this club can be, I don’t know what is. Somewhere Cullen and Betty, and Gan and Nan and a whole slew of Beulah angels, smile.

From the Sailing CommodoreA great big thank you to the MC Wisconsin Championship com-mittee of Chris Kubicek, Chrissy Kubicek, Bridgette Bonifield and Susan Clayton for all the planning and hard work. We had 154 people attend the dinner and party Saturday night, and from the comments received everyone had loads of fun. Unfortunately, we were not able to get any racing in due to lack of wind, but there was plenty of food and fun to keep everyone happy. Thank you to the Julie Haeger for finding a great Polka band and the C Fleet Committee for a great party. It was fun to watch all age groups showing off their own renditions of Polka dancing.

The X fleet traveled to Cedar Lake for Quads and were met with light, shifty winds. With only two races completed due to after-noon storms Augie Jarecki with crew Alex Mueller show good speed and finished 2nd overall. Next up for the X fleet is Lake Geneva Dingy Fest then Oshkosh Extreme, WYA and finishing up the month up North for the ILYA.

The Opti Fleet has continued to practice and race on Beulah before they start heading to regattas. This past Friday the Sailing School had 18 Optis out on the water. What a site to see all the kids enjoying friends and fun on the water. Congratulations to Kaitlyn Ward and George Lillwitz on their first Green Fleet race wins.

The rain held off on the 3rd and an amazing firework show was put on by the usual cast. The next morning a large crowd showed up for the annual pancake breakfast. It is always nice that so many family and friends come home to the LBYC for this event.

Saturday the Sailing School held its fundraiser as teams com-peted at multiple tasks around the lake followed by a great meal and auction. The Mueller Team came out on top this year with a

strong showing. LBYC is truly fortunate to have so much support for out sailing program, and the LBSS continues to be a great feeder program for the future of the LBYC.

We have had a request to add a Laser race to the Saturday and Sunday Opti Race. So, dust off your Laser and join the fun on the weekend evenings. We will try to set a long course for the lasers and start them right before the Optis. Please remember we have some green fleet sailors out there who may not be used to having other boats around them. You may need to avoid them before they realize they need to avoid you.

It has been a busy summer, and it shows no signs of slowing down. PRO, Signal Teams and Chase boat have done a great job keeping us sailing. Please remember to check the schedule and remind anyone you made a change with about their assignments. Finally, after recording finishes please remember to take a photo of the score cards and email them to Carrie. The email address is on the sheet and helps us stay on top of the scores.

Socially SpeakingBring out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! Ok, we’ll check off crazy and hazy but LBYC has been anything but lazy. The cookouts have been a wonderful success. Thanks again to the committees for their hard work and deliciously creative meals. Be sure to check the LBYC website for Wednesday night menus.

Sidestays threw a wonderful 50th anniversary party. Toasts were made, cake was cut, and camaraderie was enjoyed by all. Edie Klement and Jeanine Komas graciously cut slices from the anniversary cake. Congratulations, ladies.

The Wisconsin MC Championships Saturday night dinner was combined with the C fleet party and what a fun night it was. The dinner committee served up a tasty meal and entertainment by ‘The Squeezettes,’ a rock polka band, had Dick and Gail Wise cutting the rug as well as Ingrid (Franzene) Farrell. Dawn and Mike Greeson showed off their talents on the dance floor and Mary Kay Davenport, AKA the Energizer Bunny, worked some hard hours in the kitchen serving up dinner and was one of the last ones left on the dance floor at the end of the night. John and Emily Sullivan donated beer and wine in celebration of Scotty’s 2nd place finish at Nationals. Thanks to all who made the evening successful.

Carol and Robert Klement and crew hosted the pancake break-fast serving a crowd of approximately 155. What fun to see 14 Heckmans, about the same number of Barrs and company, and catching up with members’ grandkids who have come in to celebrate our nation’s birthday. Neal and Kate Klement, Brad Roble and Will Haeger ran the games and resurrected the pennies in the sand. Always brings a smile to my face. The egg toss was won by two of Cullen Barr’s friends. Cullen, note to self, leave the friends at home next year.

Before the next issue we slow down a bit with the MC party and a private rental on the 13th, a cookout, and a youth night. The X boats are in regatta mode - good luck to the kids and to their parents.

Just a few reminders: If you are unable to make your social assignment, please find a someone to switch with. No one wants to leave their committee short handed. Please observe that beverages purchased outside of LBYC should not be brought into the club and that alcoholic beverages purchased at the club stay club property. There is a cleaning schedule in the kitchen on the bulletin board. Feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns you may have.

Get out and enjoy the summer weather!

ZINFANDEL THE OTHER RED WINE

If you enjoy red wine and haven’t have a Dry Creek Zinfandel recently you are missing out!

Located in Sonoma County, Dry Creek Vineyard was established in 1972 and is still family owned. The 2017 Heritage Vines Zinfandel which we now carry at the club, recently received 91 points from Wine Spectator. They described it as “vibrant with zesty raspberry, toasted sage, and cracked pepper flavors that take on richness toward polished tannins.” Red Zinfandel pairs really well with a variety of foods but particularly meat such as pork, beef and lamb. The club is offering it at $32 a bottle.

House & Grounds by: Greg Thomas

UNDULATING FINISH GRADE ALONG THE SEAWALLThanks go to Kevin Brickler and Mike Greeson for the quick, ingenious fix to the hole at the Opti ramp. Using a garbage bag to contain the sand but also conform to the irregular shape below was a special use of ordinary on-hand materials including sand from the playground.

After receiving an email from Julie Haeger about the holes in the finish grade along the seawall, I sent an email to the Town of East Troy Department of Public Works requesting that they inspect and fill the suspected muskrat dens. There is one opening at the Opti ramp and another opening closer to the South property line. They will use an asphaltic gravel to fill the holes.

The holes occur in or near the ROW of East Shore Road and com-promise the road as well as the seawall. The den holes are also a hazard to safe access to the piers and Opti launch ramp. This has been a continuous problem from one year to the next. When one den opening is filled another is created along the seawall. Completing the rip rap along the south portion of the seawall will hinder access.

It was the Town’s opinion that there is perhaps one underwater access point under the seawall and that the den has been extended horizontally over the years.

BUILDING PLUMBING ISSUESIn an effort to conserve the use of water House + Grounds is Investigating changing or adjusting the flush valves on the urinals to operate in a more water conserving flush. A running toilet produces 3.5 gallons of unwanted water use and introduces additional water into the building sanitary system. New federal guidelines and plumbing codes require toilets to use less water reducing the current amount by half.

The articulated pot filling kitchen sink faucet in the three compart-ment stainless steel sink to the left of the dishwasher needs to be replaced. O’Leary Plumbing has taken the pot filling faucet apart and attempted to repair the leak and inspect the packing washer but the faucet still leaks from the hot water side. These pot filling faucets have a long extendable spout which produces fatigue on the faucet over-time. This is a Chicago Faucet wall mounted configuration to the stainless steel sink backsplash.

KITCHEN LIGHTINGAt times the kitchen lights seem to unexplainably go on and off while people are working in the kitchen. The kitchen lighting is controlled via a 4-way switching arrangement. There is a switch at the kitchen entry door, a switch going into the dining room on the serving station wall and a wall switch adjacent the freezer. When the freezer doors are opened there is a slight movement of the freezer case even though the wheels are locked. The slight movement is sometimes enough to toggle the switch off and on when the freezer compartment is close enough to the wall.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING AT THE GRILLEHouse and Grounds investigated why the exterior floodlights are not operating above the grille outside the kitchen door.

The light fixture hinged lens was opened and a torrent of water fell onto the pavement. Water penetration has compromised the light fixtures deteriorating the lens gaskets and lamp sockets and they need to be replaced.

The conduit penetration through the eave fascia board to the grille floodlight junction boxes has also caused a leak into the eave construction and some decay to the front edge of the soffit and eave fascia board. This spring, touching up the eaves with stain, the junction boxes were sealed against the eave fascia board. The sealant joint should remedy any further water penetration, but is something that needs to be maintained.

The roof attic ventilation project will also install an additional water diverter on the roof to close the gap between two existing roof diverters and drain water away from the back door and grille area. Currently, there is a lot of water directed at this eave area where below, the floodlights, grille and building air handling unit occur.

Sidestays’ CornerThank you to all who attended the Sidestays 50th anniversary party on June 22. Sidestays is very proud of 50 years of support to the LBYC and the LBSS. Thanks for all the good wishes! We were especially proud to have the most senior Sidestays past presidents at the event cut the celebration cake: Edith Klement and Jeanenne Komas.

Thanks especially to those who served as bartenders for the evening: Jeff Lippert, Dave Bitter, Chris Kubicek, Don Stein, Ron Clayton, and John Becker. Thanks to Susan Clayton, who first had the idea for the anniversary party, and the other Sidestays board members, who acted as the committee: Joelle Hudson deTarnowsky, Mary Schmitendorf, Karen Mueller, Lynn Welscher, and Susan Brown.

A highlight of the party was the announced donation of three optimists named as memorials for Betty Gehrmann, Maya Murphy, and Glenn Wegener. Thank you to these families for the memorial donations! Since the party, two other Optimists have been sponsored by LBYC families, providing key support to the sailing school and honoring some of our LBYC members who have passed. Watch upcoming Mainsheets for more details.
