Beach Water Health and Safety at the ShoresSafety and health are priorities at LakeBarrington Shores’ beach. The LakeCounty Health Department tests thebeach water by taking two water sam-ples biweekly from Memorial Daythrough Labor Day. Results are postedon the health department’s section of theLake County web site.
If one of the samples exceeds the advisablelimit, and the second test is acceptable, abeach advisory is posted at the beach. When the bacteria count exceeds permis-sible levels in both samples, the beach isclosed. When the beach is closed, thehealth department returns daily until thesamples return to safe levels. Questions re-garding the testing protocols can be di-rected to the Senior Biologist at the LakeCounty Health Department: Mike Adam,B.S., M.S., by phoning 847-377-8002.
Two factors contributing to excessive bac-terial counts are rainfall and waterfowlproximity. Waterways and wetlands arethe primary habitat of geese and ducks.Their guano washes into streams andponds after significant rainfall. Because astream enters Lake Barrington adjacent tothe beach, rainfall can result in contami-nation. Additionally, because the beach isa relatively open area, with sun warmedsand, waterfowl congregate overnight andcontaminate the beach. While little can bedone to stanch the flow of contaminatedrainwater, proper beach cleanup remainsa priority.

Halloween Safety TipsHalloween can be scary, but in a funand safe way. The following tips canhelp make these traditions an enjoy-able time for the whole family.
Never go trick-or-treating alone.Make sure that there is an adult ora responsible, older youth accompa-nying young children.
Trim trick-or-treat bags with reflec-tive tape and if your child’s costumeis all black or a darker color, trimthe sides of it so they will be more visible. Carrying a flashlight willalso help drivers to see children better as well as help keep the trick-or-treater from walking where thereare hazards.
Although it may be tempting forchildren to snack on candy whiletrick-or-treating, it is better to waituntil they get home. THERE’S STILL TIME!Even though winter isslowly sneaking up onus, there’s still plentyof time to repair or re-place problem decksand balconies beforethe construction sea-son ends. With its con-stant snow and ice and
weeks of freezing and thawing, winter weather is terrible formaking any defects on these structures worse. If your deck orbalcony is already in bad shape now, it might be unusablewhen spring rolls around again.
Don’t wait until you have an emergency! If it turns out thatmajor work is required, get it done now and be sure you’reprotected against whatever winter will throw at us this year. For those of you who are snowbirds who will be away for sev-eral months, it’s especially important to take care of potentialproblems before you leave.
Go out and take a good look at all the wood on your deck orbalcony. If anything on the railings wobbles or wiggles, or thefloor boards are uneven, or move when you step on them, there’s a problem. If you see black patches, it might indicaterot. If you can stick a knife or other sharp implement right intothe wood where the black patches are, get help fast. Little pilesof sawdust can signal insect damage that weakens the wood, and that’s also a problem. If you are able to see underneath thestructure, look there too.
Call a contractor to come and take a look. Most will performan evaluation without charge. Sometimes doing preventivemaintenance with small repairs can save you from having todo a complete replacement when you least expect it. Yourcondo’s architecture rep or your Account Manager in the Man-agement Office will be glad to advise you.

ClubsClubs Clubs Clubs Landscape Report
We all know the pluses andminuses of celebrating an-other birthday. With eachyear comes wisdom and an-other year of fond memo-ries. But typically every
birthday is also accompanied by a littleless pep in our step or a need to modifyour routine.
The same is true for the living organismsin our landscape, especially the treeswhich are such a unique feature of theLBS community. Our community haspassed its 40th birthday and so too havea large number of trees the developerplanted when LBS was created.
Of particular concern are more than2,500 conifer trees, which represent asignificant percentage of the tree popula-tion within LBS, estimated to number8,800 trees. These evergreens, typicallyAustrian or Scots pines and Coloradoblue spruces, were attractive additions toour community when first planted. Theygrow quickly, provide color during win-ter when our other trees are bare, andoffer windbreak protection and shelterfor birds. Unfortunately, these speciestypically have a short lifespan and aresusceptible to many pests and diseases.Because of these issues, the Morton Ar-boretum recommends they no longer beused in landscapes throughout theChicago region.
We have already identified 175 conifertrees which are diseased and dead ordying, and they will need to be removedand replaced where appropriate. But thisis just the beginning—we believe thatmost of our 2,500 conifers will succumbto the same fate over the next 15 years.
Removing a dead tree, including stumpremoval and restoration of the surround-ing ground, costs about $500 per tree.We have recognized this risk and in-cluded provisions to pay for this antici-pated cost in the LBCHA capital reserve.
Maintaining the forested character ofLBS is critical to our community’s future, and we plan to replace dead conifers at
Bill ’s a 50% ratio, just as we did when treeswere lost to the Emerald Ash Borer. Thiswill avoid the eventual overcrowdingwhich contributes to premature treedeath. Planting a new tree also costsabout $500 and provisions for re-plant-ing have also been incorporated into thecapital reserve. At the same time, we areexploring creative alternatives to reducetree planting costs, such as installingsmaller saplings on the sides and backsof buildings, and “growing our own”trees from saplings to a more maturestage.
Our objective is to maintain LBS’s repu-tation as the most beautiful landscape inthe Chicagoland area. The landscape isan exceptional and unique feature of ourcommunity. We enjoy our trees every daywhether we’re walking, driving or justlooking out our windows. Our landscapeis also a big selling point for potentialnew residents. So next time you notice abeautiful LBS tree, with garden hose inhand, pour it a long drink, and wish it ahappy birthday and a long and healthylife.

An adultshould go through the treats andthrow out anything that looks asthough it has been tampered with oris not in the original packaging. Payattention to ingredients while youare sorting. Some candy may not besuitable for younger children.
Leave the pumpkin carving to theadults. Children can participate bycleaning out the pumpkin. Paintedpumpkins are a fun and creativetime for kids and much safer.
