Celebrating its 42nd year, PhotoSpiva 2018 delivers an exhibit of photographic excellence from artists across the country. Ninety images will be exhibited, chosen by juror Henry Horenstein. It was a blind judging with Horenstein having no knowledge of the entrants or their status as amateurs or professionals and no categories to distinguish photographic processes. Horenstein viewed over 547 images submitted by 97 photographers via the competition’s website, photospiva.org. The competition was open to all US photographers, and any type of photographic process – from traditional to digital to photo-based mixed media – was eligible, as long as it resulted in a two-dimensional print that had never been shown at Spiva. Entrants represented 19 states, and the Four-State Area made a proud showing of 109 accepted entries; 51 entries were from the Show Me state. On March 17, Horenstein will choose winners and present cash prizes, sponsored by the Freeman R. Johnson Trust, during an awards presentation at 7 pm. The Juror’s Lecture will immediately follow. There is a suggested donation of $10 for the event. Horenstein will also conduct one-on-one portfolio reviews from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 pm that day. Cost is $15 for Spiva members and $25 for non-members. Contact Spiva for more information or to schedule a review.

Director’s Letter I M A R C H 2 0 1 8

Spiva is a symphony. Every exhibit, class, program, event, and meeting is an orchestration of creativity, communication, and bravery. I conduct and demand excellence and clear communication from my staff. They are delivering and the result is brilliant leadership and the highest quality offerings for visitors to Spiva. Have you noticed? I’m trying to be more intentional about thanking staff and volunteers for giving their time and hearts. They work hard. I’m trying to write personal notes and emails to members and patrons to let them know their patronage is vital and appreciated. Good vibes abound; in return, there is a constant flow of hand-written thank you notes to me and my staff. I keep them on my desk within sight. During 20 years as an educator, I never received so many endearing notes. We all must be doing something right! Making beautiful music together. Please welcome and applaud Jade Henning, Spiva’s new Administrator. She is an art graduate from Missouri Southern State University and is a genius addition to our ensemble.

SPIVA TRIVIA NIGHTAre you and your friends looking for something new and fun to do during Downtown Joplin’s First Thursday? Look no further. This spring we are kick-starting a new monthly event in our Main Gallery! Beginning March 1, we will hold a four-round, team-based arts and culture trivia night that will take place from 6 to 8 pm on every First Thursday. The cost will be only $5 per person in each team, with a limit of one to eight people per team. The more teammates you have, the higher your chances of winning! There will be three teams to a round and the team to win each round will win 75% of the entry fees. The remainder will go into raising money for Spiva’s Annual Fund Drive. Each round lasts 30 minutes, so we encourage you to come in, have a beer, grab a snack, and put on those thinking caps! All participants must be 21 or older. Sponsored by Missouri Eagle LLC.

ART ON TAP/SMALL WORKS CLOSING PARTYSpring forward from 6 – 9 pm on Friday, May 11! Join us for great brews, food, live music, and PhotoSpiva 2018 in the Main Gallery.

Art on Tap is an event for Spiva members and a time to invite non-member friends and family, aged 21 and older. It’s free for members, but non-members may attend by purchasing a $20 ticket. This year we’ve added a huge twist. The night doubles as the closing party for the annual Small Works Auction. Come eat, drink, listen, look, bid, and buy. Ask a friend; this party is the place to be! Watch the website for more details. Sponsored by Missouri Eagle LLC.

Get Ready to Paint the Night Away!By: Emily Stanley, Chair for the Friends of St. Avips Ball

Plans are well underway for the 56th Annual Friends of St. Avips Ball. Our committee of nearly 40 incredibly talented and hardworking women have been very busy planning and creating a wonderful night to benefit Spiva.

The theme for this year is Spiva Watercolor and Wonder. It will be held at the Roxy & Amelie Event Centers in downtown Joplin on Friday, May 4. We are very excited to announce Spiva supporter Red Onion Café will cater the ball, and Galaxy Red from St. Louis will provide entertainment for our evening. You simply do not want to miss this!

The Friends of St. Avips continue to look for underwriting support to make this event happen. A variety of levels of monetary support are available. Underwriters receive complimentary tickets and additional recognition for their support. It’s not too late to get involved! If you are interested in underwriting our event, please contact Wendy Sears at [email protected].

If you would like to receive an invitation to the ball, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

For over 50 years, The Friends of St. Avips has worked hard to raise more than $1 million for the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. These dollars have allowed for the Center to continue their mission of “Celebrating the Creative Experience.” I have personally served on this committee for more than a decade, and I am proud to tell you the time and effort each committee member gives to create a successful evening for Spiva is truly amazing.

We look forward to seeing you on May 4!

Good things do come in small packages! At Spiva Center for the Arts, those small packages will measure 12”x12”, 9”x12” or 6”x6” during the 20th Annual Small Works Auction.

In this exhibit and auction, more than 100 Spiva member artists create works from jewelry to collage, which they donate for auctioning. The exhibit is a great way not only to raise money to fund Spiva operations, but also to offer exposure for the participating artists.

This not-to-miss event includes a closing party for bidding, set for 6 to 9 pm Friday, May 11. New for this year’s closing party will be Art on Tap with beer, food, music, and fast and furious bidding!

Especially anticipated every year are the Rainmaker entries. Rainmakers are artists whose works have sold for $300 or more during previous Small Works auctions. With an opening bid of $300, these works hold a place of honor in the exhibit.

All other works start their bidding at $35. For all entries, there is a “Buy It Now” option for those who don’t want to risk losing a piece in a last-minute bidding war. Artists set their own “Buy It Now” prices, but the minimum is $125. Rainmakers’ minimum “Buy It Now” price is $500.

Works may be viewed and bids may be placed online at http://spivaarts.org/small-works-auction/ from the opening of the exhibit until 3 pm on Friday, May 11. Online bidders will have to send a proxy the night of live bidding to ensure they bid up to the last minute.

With the exposure for artists comes the potential bragging rights for recognition for creating the best entries: Juror’s Choice; Best 3-D; Best Mixed Media; Best Photography; Best Still Life or Floral; and Best Landscape or Plein Air. Exhibition visitors will determine the People’s Choice award. The juror will be announced on opening night.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and over 90 images appearing in PhotoSpiva 2018 will be waiting to inspire writers for the 10th annual 1000 Words event.

Authors are invited to pick one or two exhibition photos to use as springboards for poems or prose. They will do readings of their work at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, April 17, in the Main Gallery. The public is invited to attend. Readings will be recorded and linked to their exhibition photos via QR codes.

To learn more: Contact Shaun Conroy at [email protected], 417-623-0183 or visit our website.
