TITLE:- Comprehensive Volumetric Analysis of Bhagavatham(bhagavathagananadhyayamu)
By: V. Sambasiva Rao
Bhagavatha Gananopakhyanam of Pothana Telugu Bhagavatham
BHAGAVATH GANANOPAKHYANAMU (COMPREHENSIVE VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS)
Main ConceptMy concept of COMPREHENSIVE VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS is meant to
include the following:
Preparation of bibliographical study of a book in Indian language, in which it is written.
Computerizing the book in a user friendly, computer friendly in the same language, all the textual files in word file format.
Segregating and enumerating syllables, words, chapters / subjects / slokas / poems / text / paragraphs etc.
Generating DATA BANKS in xl file format.
Developing analytical reports such as indexes, tables, charts utilizing simple computer tools like sort, pivot tables, charts
Introduction
Indian languages in general are phonetic by nature. They have considerable influence of Sanskrit, the mother language, on them. Their script consists of SYLLABLES that is one or more character (oval or consonants) to form a single letter. Words formed of such syllables. As such, theoretically there is possibility for unlimited number of syllables. But the actual quantity may not be very large number may be in few thousand, however it varies from book to book and so on.
The Telugu language is a South Indian language. It is also known as Andhra bhasha. It is a Dravidian language heavily dependent on Sanskrit. The specialty in Telugu language is PADYA, a unique style of poems. It is like this, all the syllables are considered as falling under two (2) types, the long (guru) and the short (laghu). Further some additional conditions like yathi, prasa, requiring relationship between syllables at specific locations. With this binary representation various styles of padyas are designed. The padya are having their specific beauty and tune. Theoretically there may not be a limit for the types of poems that can be developed. Very few types of padyas are generally used. Most of earlier works in Telugu are completely written in padyas (poems) or padyas (poems) and gadyas (prose) interwoven. Similar style is followed in those days and lot of religious works of Sanskrit are rewritten in telugu
The great Telugu poet Pothana has rewritten very beautifully the Srimadbhagavatham in telugu, with wonderful padyas interwoven with nice gadyas.
He being a natural poet, his Bhagavatham is not very difficult to follow. Bhagavatham is an important Hindu devotional, mythological, philosophical, sacred book. There are 9014 padyas / gadyas in total spread across the 12 skamdhas (with 5 th and 10th
skamdhas having two (2) parts). Total number of syllable used is about nine (9) lakhs, in 31 types of padya / gadyas.
I am envisaging developing Bhagavath Gananopakhyanams using the principles of comprehensive volumetric analysis as explained. I am trying to ascertain that the total work is user friendly in computer friendly environment.
In view of the large volume & complexity of the work involved, I am executing the work in number of sub projects as detailed bellow.
Preparation
o Procured laptop etc.
o Got my machine settings tuned in the control panel to make it suitable for using Telugu language. (default font : Gautami)
First sub project data and model analysis for Basic details of Padya / gadyas used
Next skamdha wise sub projects of Computerization and development volumetric analysis data for:
1st Skamdha
2nd Skamdha
3rd Skamdha
4th Skamdha
5th Skamdha, 1st Aswasa
5th Skamdha, 2nd Aswasa
6th Skamdha
7th Skamdha
8th Skamdha
9th Skamdha
10th Skamdha, 1st Aswasa
10th Skamdha, 2nd Aswasa
11th Skamdha
12th Skamdha
Comprehensive sub project of Merging and developing a comprehensive volumetric analysis data bank
Furnish some reports in pivot tables, charts, indexes.
Important Features
A research & Analytical oriented study of the Pothana Bhagavatham in Telugu script.
The concept the Comprehensive Volumetric Analysis of a major scripture in Indic language like Telugu is unique, innovative and without any precedence
Usage of Telugu in computer for the total work.
To enable wider usability and acceptability in general PCs, utilizing mainly Word file and Excel file formats of Micro Soft (I am using Vista OS and MS Office 2007).
No need of any other software, add-ons etc.
User friendly for copy, search, edit, sort, reporting in tables & charts text & data file.
Preparation First settings for my computer were tuned for Telugu, so that user
friendly Word and Excel files can be generated in Telugu. In this context some of the Menu also visible in Telugu. Please find a screen shot to indicate the same.
1st Sub project of basic details of padya / gadyas used. I prepared DATABANK with 6 details of all the poems of the Book (totaling 10058 in all Skamdhas put together, including the 1048 padyas under seesa padyas) ie Skamdha, poem no, poem name, First letter, First word and subject. (Screen Shot of 1st page shown below)

I generated some sample reports with this basic data of psdya / gadyas as shown bellow:
Quantities of various types of poems as against individual skamdh, in a table form.It is having data in 31 rows.
Index type of poem wise (10054 rows)
March 25, 2010 Page 8
Alphabetical & natural Indexes each 10054 rows. (screen shot with 1st
pages of both files shown below)
March 25, 2010 Page 9
The Volumes of type of First letters and First words - Skamdha wise - 2 reports (394, 5235 rows respectively). (screen shot of both files shown below)
March 25, 2010 Page 10
Chart showing Quantum of poems skamdha wise.
Comparative Chart showing Quantum of poems by Pothana and the 3 associate writers.
Note:- considering that skamdhas 1 to 4 & 7 to 10 belong to Pothana and balance skamdhas 5, 6, 11 & 12 belong to other 3 writers.

Chart showing number of types of syllables in each of the skamdha
Chart of the number of times Shri (శ్రీ) as the first letter in each skamdha.

Chart of Type of poems used more than 100 time
Chart of type of poems less than 100 more than 2 times used.

Chart of Average number of poems per type of poem
Chart of Quantum of type First words.

Next sub projects of Computerization and development volumetric analysis data bank for all the skamdhas:
Computerization of Basis Texts, development of data for all the skamdhas one by one, in Word & Excel files
Preparation of user friendly basis texts with linkable auto generated index in word.
Develop computer friendly data of pamkthi. Line no (unique no), skamdha, subject, poem no, poem type, pada no, text in the line are the fields considered. The vertical reading of the column “patam” gives text as in basis text.
Develop data of padakeli, that is for words, break up words, meaning (Teeka), explanations (Tippani). The vertical reading of the column “akshara & pollu” gives text as in basis text
Data of First letters. The vertical reading gives true to same text as basis text.
March 25, 2010 Page 16
Develop prathipathartha in word file in user friendly form searchable and have this and main text files side by side on the desktop. A screen shot is placed bellow:
Charts showing number of syllables and types of syllables used in 1,2, 3 Skamdhas.
March 25, 2010 Page 17
Charts showing number of breakup words & lines and number of poems used in 1,2, 3 Skamdhas.
Model data searchable – Teeka. (meanings)
March 25, 2010 Page 18
Model data searchable – Tipapni. (degrees of comparison & Explanations)
Vivaranalu –details in separate word / excel file formats.
Comprehensive sub project of Merging and developing a comprehensive volumetric analysis data bank
Merging all similar files duly modifying to uniform format to form comprehensive user friendly data bank.
Furnish some reports in pivot tables, charts, indexes.
Targetted users
March 25, 2010 Page 19
The text and prathipatharth files much useful for all people including fresh readers with interst in puranas / Bhagavatham in telugu
The data bank is useful for further study / reaserch work. Just can add required column with mark / comments and obtain dependable, consisitant reports for finer analysis.
