Marine Corps Scholarship Golf Tournament The local MCSF Chapter is gearing up for this September. Our local Chapter’s website is: www.mcsfkc.org, and the national site is www.mcsf.org. There will be 2 flights this year, with a goal of a minimum of 200 golfers. The September event will be Monday, the 15th, at St. Andrew’s course in Overland Park. More volunteers are needed for the 15th. Nationwide, up to 1,250 scholarships are expected to be awarded; the amount has been increased to $4,375 per recipient. For children of Marines and FMF Corpsmen killed during the War on Terror, the scholarship amount has been increased from $20,000 to $30,000. John Miller, a metro Ford dealership owner, is donating a new Ford for the hole-in-one. More raffle items, including gift certificates from restaurants and other stores, are needed. The Motorcycle Poker Run on Saturday, June 28th was a definite success. Marine Byrnes will give a report on this at our meeting. Good of the League Department of Kansas Commandant, Marine Gonzalo Reyes of our Unit, will represent the Department of Kansas as well as our Unit, at the National Convention of the Marine Corps League in Orlando from 09 August – 16 August. Cmdt. Reyes will be helping to lead the effort to change the By-Laws to permit the wearing of the khaki shirt or the white shirt, as members wish, at our meetings and events. Detachment Commandant Pat O’Malley is contacting the Commandant of the Department of Florida as well as the Commandants of the numerous Florida Detachments in regard to the above effort. Please go to www.woundedmarinecareers.org and www.woundedwarriorproject.org for information about these inspiring initiatives to assist severely wounded Marines and other Armed Forces members during the time between their active duty and transition to civilian life. The second site requires registration. Another site of interest to Marines is www.patriotfiles.com, where over 800 Marines from Kansas are listed. This is another excellent recruiting tool. There are benefits for persons who served in the U.S. Military prior to January, 2002. These Social Security benefits are credited for the years of active duty through 2001. Up to $1200/yr. of earnings credit can be received. This is credited at the time when application is made; bring in your DD-214 to the Social Security office. You must ask for this benefit to receive it! See socialsecurity.gov/retire2/military.htm. This benefit is not just for retirees. Let us each strive to recruit a new MCL member by the July meeting. Commandant O’Malley has set a goal to increase our membership by 15% during our new calendar year. To look up fellow Marines from across the nation, go to www.militaryconnections.com. If you
