INTRODUCTION

The above title is the Headlines in a daily English Newspaper Deccan Herald

Bangalore on the Independence day issue dated 15th August 2010.

This 5 column news item is based on the proceedings of the National Seminar

conducted by the Madras University and National Vethathirian Centers on 5th and 6th

of August 2010, commemorating the centenary birthday celebrations of our Guru

Vethathiri Maharishi.

We share with you some excerpts.

WHITHER SPIRITUALISM?

This question dogs many young men and women now, shaken as they are after the

recent scandals about some Swamiji in the suburbs of Bangalore.

Even the developed Western Nations are turning to Asias spiritual traditions to see if

the latter could offer new ways of harmonizing the individual ego with the other to

restore ecological balance in the wake of the climate change crisis. The Madras

University Department of Philosophy decided to tap its indigenous roots to see if

emeralds are there.

Surprisingly, the result was a fascination interplay of diverse perspectives by scholars

from different parts of the country including Karnataka on the relevance of an obscurehandloom weaver from Tamilnadu who turned wise to become Vethathiri Maharishi.

MAHARISHIS CENTENARY YEAR

As the Maharishis centenary year began on Saturday, the intellectual excitement had

a numerical halo in capturing the strong undercurrents of the pan Indian spiritual

tradition, lest the youth may turn cynical by the wayward ways of a Swami here or a

god man there.

To day, the child is introduced into a fractured scenario in terms of caste, religion,

culture, geography, economic inequality and politics as Prof. Pal, Chairman Dept. of

Psychology, Karnatak University, Dharwad, put it to Madras University ViceChancellor Dr. Thiruvasagam.

ABSOLUTE SPACE ONE GOD FOR WORLD PEACE

Many saints and seers in the past have undoubtedly offered a vision of the One-ness

of the world. Either they led a narcissistic celebration of the individual self or a total

of the other. However Vethathiri Maharishi seeks to reverse this by unifying the

forces of nature, including gravity, human consciousness, and everything that goes

with the all pervasive, absolute space (Akash). It at one stroke breaks the man-

nature dichotomy, even while focusing on non-violence and compassion in the search

for Truth.

There is no notion of a personal god in Vethahthiri maharishi, as he considers

absolute space itself as god. this god is the best friend of all, cutting at the root all

religious divisions a dynamite of global terrorism today, explained Prof. Krishna,

former Professor of Philosophy, Mysore University. When gods of all religions merge,

it should lead to world peace.

ALL PART OF ONE WHOLE WORLD

A war in the womb hurts you, not others reminds Dr. Siddhashrama, Professor of

Philosophy, Karnatak University, Dharwad, succinctly capturing the maharishis

insights on Personality Development, quoting another profound Kannada PoetAmbigara Chowdaiah. Resolving the youth crisis today lay in realizing we are all part

of one whole world he told.

GRAVITATIONAL FORCE BELONGS TO SPACE (AND NOT TO EARTH)

That there is no dichotomy in the Maharishis view between nature, matter,

consciousness and the cosmos, echoing the insights of modern physics that mass

and energy are interchangeable, was a basic strand emphasized by almost all

Speakers.. Newton thought the apple fell because of pull of gravity; but Vethathitri

said just the opposite that the gravitational force belonged to the space itself, which ispushing the apple down mused Dr. G. Alagar Ramanujam.

Alagar is excited that a group of Physicists in the Netherlands are today speaking the

same language of gravity as an illusion. Maharishi with very little formal education

knew neither Newton nor Einstein. Vethathiri s intuitions are remarkable for

someone who hardly attended School chipped in Prof. Bhuvan Chandel, Vice

President Indian Philosopical Congress.

VETHATHIRI MAHARISHI A GREAT MAHAN OF THIS CENTURY

More than 25 Speakers of eminence spoke in this National Seminar about the

Contributions of Vethathiri Maharishi to Philosophy, Yoga, Science and World Peace.It is highlighted that Vethathirian Philosophy is not only a common mans Philosophy

but it is also a Practical Philosophy for this Modern World. Such practices are the

need of the hour, to start thinking from the heart using the best of the brain for the

betterment of future generations.
