FUN IN THE SUN

You could have fun in the sunWith a tan and some sand

But summers now overAnd fall is in play

And just look for some signs of the fallAnd play in some leaves’

Don’t you love to be in the fallClimb a tree and pick some leaves

Good buy for now But before I go I must take a bow

Dear Students, Parents, and Faculty, Welcome to another year filled withpositive experiences and successful journeys. I am proud to say that the hard work of our students and staff has been recognized. In 2011-12 we met each of our 17 Annual Yearly Progress Goals set forth by the PA State De-partment of Education. I know that we can match this level of success and even take it to another level. I encourage students to strive to be the best student that they can be every day. I encourage teachers and faculty mem-bers to go the extra mile to make a difference in their students’ lives. I encourage parents to get involved in the children’s education. Most of all I strive to make this a truly great place to spend each day and receive an excel-lent education. I truly believe education is a team process. Working together, parents, fac-ulty, staff, and students can make education a fulfillingandenjoyableprocess.Itismyhopethat each day I can contribute in some way to the priceless educations of each and every student at the Mahanoy Area Middle School. Sincerely, Michael Heater Jr. Middle School Principal

Student Recognition Program

The second year of student recognition is un-der way. Students are completing daily chal-lenges such as event of the week, word of the day, and math problem of the week. In ad-dition, students will be honored in the areas of most improved, most mannerly, and stu-dent of the month. An addition to this year’s program will be recognition of improvement, proficiency, and perfection on quarterlybenchmark tests. Students will be eligible for prizes, school wide recognition, and periodic socials for their efforts.

Seriously. We’re in Middle School, right? On television, it either seems to be filled withbulliesandcliques, orissupercool. Well, it’s both. Honestly, I think we all can name a few people who are, well, jerks. Big, fat, world class jerks. Then, of course, there are the kids who keep to themselves. In little groups.Yeah, thecliques.Theynever seemto let anyone else in, (unless assigned by a teacher) and basically are the ‘cool’ kids. As well as the jocks, although they are more of an all-around group. You may or may not be a bully, and you mayormaynotbeinacliqueofsomesort.I’m not judging, or picking on anyone in gen-eral. You are who you are. There’s no changing that. Sure, there may be people who want to change you. There might, and probably will be, people that try to break you. Yeah, this is

totally one of those talks. Not. I’m going through the same thing as ev-eryone else. I’m not perfect. No one is. I’m not trying to say that I’m better, and you should follow my example. In fact, nobody here can say that. Most of us want to fit in. We wantcool friends, expensive clothes, and a ‘hot’ boyfriend or girlfriend. I know that’s what I want. I want to blend in and get good grades. The truth is, you have to work for it. You don’t get everything you want, and nei-ther does anyone else. Except, maybe, those seemingly rich kids. But that’s not my point! We need to realize that the real world is going to be tough on us. You need to work hard, and stand out if you want to make it. Unlessyouwanttoflipburgersfortherest of your life.

The New Substitute Teacher – Mr. BoyleBy: Lois Johnson

I have decided to write about Mr. Boyle be-cause he is one of Mahanoy Area’s newest substitute teachers and I would like to have everyone meet him. Mr. Boyle was born in Allentown, Penn-sylvania. He did not always get good grades, but he did go to Wagner University and stud-ied Hospitality Management. At age 25, he decided to become a teacher to teach young students the importance of a good education. His favorite subject is gym, but he would like to teach all subjects. At this time, Mr. Boyle is not married and has no children, however he has a dog. Her name is Pepper and she is a Boxer. For fun, he likes playing Rugby. His hobby is to coach trackandfield.Hisfavoritesportsteamsarefootball – Notre Dame, baseball – Phillies and basketball – Villanova. Mr. Boyle’s favorite memory of teaching so far is his interactions with the students. Wel-come to Mahanoy Area, Mr. Boyle, and many more fond student memories.

The 5th grade class will be making Veter-ans Day cards again this year. If you know a veteran who you think might like to receive a card thanking them for their service, please email their...1. name and address2. branch of serviceto Mrs. Cavenas. “I can’t begin to tell you the amount of positive feedback I received last year after completing this project. It was a very rewarding experience,” she stated.

Young people are the future of our communities. Their ideas and input can help to shape our small towns and neighborhoods in meaningful ways, but their voic-es are often underrepresented in the media. To address this need, Coal Cracker Magazine, a project of Heron’s Eye Communications, will host a series of four free workshops to train young journalists in ex-ploring their sense of place through interviews, writing and photography. The series is open to young people ages 12 - 18, and will be held Saturdays, from 11 am - 1 pm, on November 3, 10, 17 and December 1, at the Mahanoy City Public Library. No prior journalism experience is required. The inter-active sessions will provide a foundation of knowledge in media literacy, an approach to education that helps people to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages in print, video and web. Students will gain interviewing, photography and writing skills as they develop short articles, profiles and images that may be published in print or online by Coal Cracker Magazine.

Coal Cracker Magazine Launches Youth Journalism Project

“We are grateful to the Mahanoy City Public Library Board of Directors for recognizing the importance of supporting young people in our communities and for welcoming Coal Cracker into its wonderful facility,” says Krista Gromalski, a Co-Founder of Heron’s Eye Communications. The Coal Cracker sessions are part of Gromalski’s graduate studies in Sustainable Business and Com-munities at Goddard College. Gromalski is a native of Mahanoy City, a graduate of Marian High School and Wilkes University.Heron’s Eye Communications is a marketing, publishing and project management firm with offices in Schuylkill and Pike counties. Gromalski and Sandy Long, a Wil-kes-Barre native, founded the company in 2006 with a mission to create strong community partnerships that foster a healthy environment, desirable quality of life and sustainable local economy. Heron’s Eye received a 2008 PA Governor’s Award for Environmental Excel-lence for its work on the public television documentary Nature’s Keepers: A Community of Conservationists.

We decided to interview Mr. Zack because he is our favorite teacher. What made him become a teacher is because he wanted to give something back to Maha-noy Area. Some of the things he likes about teaching is, working with kids and meeting new kids every year. Some of the things he doesn’t like about teaching is schedule disruptions. He went to Penn State’s main campus for college and went to Mahanoy Area in high school. Some of the hobbies he likes to do when he isn’t teaching is camping, traveling, going to Penn State football games, and home improvement projects. If he could do anything he wanted he would be able to be in more than one place at a time. His morning routine is waking up, drink coffee, get a shower, drinking more coffee, get dressed, drink even more coffee, than go to school. His favorite subject to teach is math and he loves working with kids.

Fourth Graders Help Animals

Once again, the 4th graders in Ms. Jarrard’s classes collected food/treats, cleaning supplies, litter, leashes, toys, newspapers and towels/blankets for the Hillside SCPA, a no kill shelter. This is the eleventh year that Ms Jarrard’s students have done a community service projects for the animals and they thank everyone that donated.
