The Navi Mumbai Municipal Cor-

poration (NMMC) maintains various roads in its limits. Lakhs of rupees are spent on their maintenance and upkeep every year. This money is collected from the people by way of taxes. G S Patil, the working president of Navi Mumbai NCP, met the NMMC Commis-sioner Abhijit Bangar and demanded that the toll tax on vehicles at Airoli and Vashi toll plazas should be waived off as the citizens of the

satellite city are paying twice.

“As per the gov-ernment order, the companies which are in charge of collecting tolls, have to take care of the maintenance and repair of the roads. However, as NMMC is maintaining various roads connecting Vashi and Airoli toll nakas, vehicles from Navi Mumbai entering both the toll plazas should be exempted from toll,” said Patil.

“If the money col-lected from the resi-dents of Navi Mumbai by way of tax, is being used for maintaining roads, then the corpora-tion and the govern-ment should make toll free for Navi Mumbai,” said G S Patil.

“We intend to get the Sion Panvel High-way transferred to the Corporation. We will also take up the issue of toll exemption with the state government”, said Mr. Bangar.

Lured to get VIP mobile number, a

businessman living in Panvel was cheated of Rs 65,000. Panvel city police has registered a case against the under the IT Act and fraud.

The victim Kedar Nadgaudi, received a message last July on his mobile from Airtel that VIP mobile numbers were available for sale at Rs 55,000 plus 18 per cent GST. The message had signature of Bharti Airtel's defunct com-pany secretary Krishnan Puri and stamp by Bharti Airtel.

Believing, Nadgaudi reverted to the message

which was handled by Varun Diwan and ex-pressed his readiness to buy the VIP number. Following which Varun sent an invoice of Rs 64,900 on Nadgaudi's email ID with GST num-ber, PAN number, Airtel address in Mumbai.

Nadgaudi then sent Rs 64,900 to his bank account. Meanwhile, Varun promised to send the VIP mobile SIM card four days later. Accordingly, Nadgaudi contacted Varun Diwan several times after four days. However, he did not respond to Nadgaudi calls.

When Nadgaudi in-quired about the bank

account to which he had sent the money, the bank officer said that the account was not in the name of Bharti Airtel but in the name of Prashant Chandrakant Narvekar. Nadgaudi then went to Airtel and inquired about the invoice sent to him by Varun Diwan. He was also told that the invoice was fake.

Realizing that he had been cheated, he lodged a written complaint with the Panvel City Police Station. After confirm-ing the complaint, the police on Wednesday registered a case under the IT Act against Varun Diwan and have started searching for him.

Pravin Yadav (24) a resident

of Airoli, who works in a well known company that exports fruits, was disturbed to see a large amount of wast-age of bananas. “Even if there is a slight discolou-ration on a fruit, these get rejected and are dumped,” said Pravin.

Determined to make the best utilisation of these rejected bananas, Pravin along with his Head, Ansh Sakhuja de-cided to distribute the fruits, especially the ba-nanas, among the needy people living in the slums.

“As per the export criteria, only the best, complete ripened banan-as with yellow colour can be exported to west-ern countries. Hence, a lot of pigmented ones, although good and deli-cious get left out. Every-day100-200 kgs of ba-nanas are left out from the export criteria. After getting permission from the company, we dis-tribute these among the

needy,” said Pravin.Pravin along with his

two friends, distribute the highly nutritious ba-nanas in Panvel, Airoli, Mumbra and Thane ar-eas.

Pravin says, “Ba-nanas are rich in mag-nesium, potassium and fibre and is loaded with the essential minerals. This yellow fruit con-

tains all the nutri-ents that is needed to support heart. It is a well-known fact that bananas are really good for energy and hence many nutritionists even ask people to include a banana in their daily diet”.

“Bananas are rich source of po-tassium and a po-tassium rich diet can lower blood pressure. They con-

tain several essential nutrients that are help-ful for digestion, heart health & weight loss as well. Apart from being nutritious they are also highly convenient food”, said Bhavani Swamina-than, Nutritionist & Ho-listic Wellness Coach, Founder of Aakanksha: Desire For Wellness.

The Navi Mumbai Police has suc-ceeded in solving the murder case

of Pravin Nair (50), whose decom-posed was found in a garbage dump at APMC. The police said that he was killed by his acquaintance, Prem Ba-hadur Laxman Bahadur Sawan (49), a Nepali man.

The murder of Pravin Nair had come to light, after his body was found in a heap of trash last Sunday. After that, the APMC police investi-gated and arrested the accused Prem Bahadur within 24 hours, said Suresh Mengde, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Circle-1.

The deceased Pravin Nair lived with his ex-wife Paru Sheikh in a hut-ment in APMC area. However, Paru had abandoned him a few years back as he was always arguing with her for money. After which Paru got married to Prem Bahadur and was living with him in a hut there. However, since Pravin Nair and Prem Bahadur were acquainted with each other, they used to drink alcohol together and from time to time they would sit in Paru's hut to drink alcohol. After Diwali, Pravin Nair and Prem Bahadur were sitting in Paru's hut drinking alcohol till late at night. A verbal argument ensued between them. In a fit of anger, Prem Bahadur beat Pravin Nair to death.

Prem Bahadur later had wrapped his body in a plastic banner and dumped it in a garbage heap at some distance from the hut after learning

that he had died in the attack the next morning. He then threatened Parul not to tell anyone about the incident. He then went to live in a hut at Mafco with Paru and the children. Meanwhile, the body of Pravin Nair was completely decomposed. A month later, after his decomposed body was found wrapped in a plastic banner last Sunday, APMC police launched an investigation.

The APMC police formed a special squad and started an investigation in the surrounding slums. During the in-terrogation, police received informa-tion that a woman named Paru, who lived in a hut some distance away, had left the hut without telling anyone. So the police searched for Paru on suspi-cion. After further questioning by the police, she confessed that her second husband Prem Bahadur Sawan had killed her first husband Pravin Nair and dumped his body in the garbage. Police later arrested Prem Bahadur, who was trying to flee to Nepal. This information was given by Suresh Mengde, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-1.

The year 2020 will be re-membered in the history

for Covid-19 pandemic and also the challenges that the people faced during lock-down across the world. For Bollywood too the year 2020 was a black year. Bollywood got a tagline of drugs den, nepotism, killer of talents after the suicide of young talented actor Sush-ant Singh Rajput (SSR) on 14th June, 2020.

In 2020, the world's most prolific

movie industry saw the heartbreak-ing deaths in April, 2020 of luminar-ies Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. The other well-known fraternities from the industries who left for the heavenly abode were music composer Wajid Khan who died of coronavirus at 42, director Basu Chatterjee, Bol-lywood's first female choreographer Saroj Khan, Singer S P Balasubhrah-manyam who sang around 40,000 film songs and many others.

The suicide of 34 year talented star SSR created a ripple in the coun-try. After his death there were many theories and news by all the electron-ic, social and print media regarding nepotism, murders, involvement of politicians and how the talents are killed in the industry which maligned the image of Bollywood industry.

Big names like Rhea Chakraborty was accused of involvement in the murder or abetment to suicide of

Sushant Singh Rajput with black magic and cannabis. Even though the 28 year old actress denied any wrong-doing, she spent months in custody for allegedly buy-ing drugs for Rajput. Many stars like Deepika Padu-kone, Shradha Kapoor and

Soha Ali Khan were also hauled for questioning as the investigation esca-lated.

Swara Bhaskar, while counting the year 2020 as one of the disastrous

years for Bollywood said, "2020 has really been a terrible year for Bolly-wood. The slender campaign by some sections of the media against the film industry has been horrendous."

Shreyas Talpade, Bollywood Ac-tor, Director and Producer said, "We would love to say bye-bye to the year 2020 on a priority basis because this year we have lost many well-known celebrities and really it was the worst year in the history of Bollywood. We pray that 2021 is the best year for Bollywood and everything should come on the track."

One of the leading social and cultural

organisations of India, Teamwork Arts group, has done great service to the society, particularly for the arts fraternity, as they were badly hit by the pandemic. Artists form an integral part of the society and for the performing artists it is the per-formance that matters the most. In other words, the "show must go on" but the pandemic had completely shattered the scenario.

Sanjoy Roy, the director and founder of Teamwork Arts launched "Art Matters I believe", advocacy and fundraising initiative in order to promote and preserve arts and crafts with the partnership with top organisations like UNESCO, FICCI and ICCR. With the inception in April this year, Team Work Fine Arts Society has been showcasing India's rich cultural diversity with views 1.90.000 and featured in India Ahead News Channel, thereby supporting 5,000 artist families across India. Kudos for this great noble social service. The grand gala programme was held in October this year.

The top organisations which

had come forward to complete this great task are A.R. Rahman Founda-tion (Mumbai), Artists and Artists (Mumbai), Brah-maputra Cultural Founda-tion, (Assam), Sufi Kathak Foundation (New Delhi), the Rajasthan Josh Sidhar Vikas Sansthan (Jaisel-

mer Rajasthan), Ananda Shankar Centre for Performing Arts (Kol-kata), Zariya Foundation (Mumbai), Jaipur Rugs (Rajasthan), Amar Rass Society for Performing Arts (New Delhi), Sutradhar Social Ventures - Behrupiya community, Box: Light sense Art Foundation, Independent Artists, PAN India and Vimor Hand-loom Foundation.

Several top and famous perform-ing artists from the field of music, dance and drama came forward to showcase their art and also to contribute for this wonderful social cause. They include Usha Uthup, Mahabharat by Anurupa Roy, Kailash Kher, Rahmat-e- Nusrat, Javed Ali, Raja and Radha Reddy, Malvika Sarukkai,A R.Rahman, Attakkalari Centre for Performing arts. Dr L Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurthy and others.

EditorialiSSue: 174 1 JANuARy, 2021

The year 2020 is one that will never be forgotten for many

generations. The year saw the global pandemic, where people were con-fined to their houses, trying to fight the battle against the coronavirus. This will be the year that will re-mind humanity to never take things for granted.

2020 literally brought the world to a standstill. Distressing images of migrants walking along highways, pregnant migrant workers, gasping for breath and yet marching ahead, haunt us. The Indian economy was adversely hit and the people faced acute financial crunch. However, the year also made us aware of many other things. It made us realise the importance of being together, need to focus on health and strike a bal-ance in our activities. It also made

us realise that there is a need to fo-cus on public health and upgrade health facilities.

However, everything that ends, marks a new beginning. It is the be-ginning of an era of psychological and spiritual awareness and growth. We need to let go of 2020 with a re-newed resolve to be human, to sur-vive together, to learn together and persevere in the many beginnings that we are still to see. We need to welcome the New Year 2021 with great hope, positivity and renewed vigour.

On behalf of the entire team of Newsband, we wish all our readers and advertisers a Very Happy and Prosperous New Year. May each day of the New Year brings lots of happiness, joy and good health in everyone’s life.

Ushering in New Year with renewed vigour

2019. But till date not even a single bidder has come forward for the project and hence there is a delay in starting the work" added Patil.

A senior official from the NMMC informed, "This entire year went in fighting the pandem-ic. Hence, we were un-able to start the work of RoB at Juinagar railway crossing. However, the work will start in the early months of 2021. We will try to complete the project by the end of the year."

In the mid of 1990's, the City & Industrial Development Corpora-tion (CIDCO) had built the arterial road above the railway tracks and since then the commut-ers have been risking their lives while cross-ing it.

The Central Railway, after two months of the accident, had installed a level crossing gate.

An official was also deployed to close the gate whenever the train passed through the spot.

The official who is deployed for taking care of it informed, "Every day around 15-20 trains on the harbour and trans- harbour lines ply on the tracks to go to the San-pada car shed. I close the gate soon after receiving the signal of an incom-ing train. But there are few people in the area, mostly pedestrians, who cross the gate even when I close them. And when I ask them not to do it, they argue with me."

President of Panvel Pravasi Sangh, Bhakti Dave said, "The popu-lation of the city is in-creasing at a great pace. Even if the frequency of the trains on the spot is not too high, the fre-quency of the people has increased. Also in future, the city population will rise due to development in the city and there will be a lot of changes in the coming years. So there

is an urgent need of an RoB at Juinagar."

Sanjay Pandey, a resident of Juinagar sector-23 said, "We are really disappointed with the civic body for the delay in the completion of the project. I have seen people crossing the tracks and risking their lives. People staying in Sanpada & Juinagar use the track to reach the Juinagar railway station. We have urged the au-thorities several times to come up with some con-structive solution. But till date, demands have fallen into deaf ears."

Abhishek Ranaware, another resident from Juinagar Sector-24 said, "Both the NMMC and the CIDCO have enough resources to build class infrastructure in the city but they are delaying it. It is also important that a survey is conducted to see which areas need RoBs. Accordingly, steps should be taken to ensure that the travel is smooth for everyone."

Who would have thought that the

citizens of the empire on which the sun nev-er sets would one day be denied entry to the world? It has happened. The British who had inscribed: Indians and dogs not allowed in var-ious parts of the country they ruled, are now re-fused entry to almost all countries of the world. It is karma. Those who believed that bad Kama would be punished in the next life, have now to believe that what one gives in this life comes back in this life itself, not in any other janam.

Not only have the tables been turned in this matter, but in other matters also. The whites sneered at our curries and the rich aroma (for which they wrinkled their nos-es). Today, scientists believe that the small amounts of adhrak, jeera, spices that we add to our cooking builds up more resistance to germs and diseases than any medi-cine. People now believe in our kadhas which our grandmothers and their grandmothers prescribed as homemade medi-cines for almost all ills.

It is but repetition but it has to be told that our age old practices like yoga, our ancient beliefs in haldi milk, and other things are now forming part of the daily routine in other countries.

Our villages and an-cestral homes had the toilets a distance away from the living rooms.

We always washed our hands and feet after vis-iting the toilets. Look what the world is now doing-sanitising hands after every visit to the washroom. Water is now seen as the best cleans-ing agent rather than tissues, wet wipes and the like. Of course, the cold weather in western countries made wiping more a habit than wash-ing. Tables, utensils, crockery all are wiped clean because water from the taps was cold but now every house-hold in the west has hot and cold water side by side.

Eating with hands

was frowned upon by the elite who used knives, forks and spoons. Sci-entists now tell us that food should be appreci-ated by the eyes, smelt by the nose and felt by the hands. Only then is the full value of food ap-preciated. That is what we have always been doing. Our food has rich red, brown, yellow, green or orange colours. A handful of ripe red to-mato cubes, sprinkling of lush green coriander and the aroma of sea-soning with rayi, jeera, kadipatta etc looks so very appealing. The ap-petizing smell that wafts from our food, can this be compared with the baked chicken, meat, veggies or anything?

Indians always had

fresh nimbu paaani dur-ing summer months. Lemons are rich in Vi-tamin C, a necessity now during the covid problem. Following the west our five star ho-tels welcomed guests with artificial flavor of fruits while giving fresh lemon slices with warm water for washing hands after food. Now the tables have turned and fresh lime or lemon is part of every person’s diet to ward off the co-rona virus.

How the tables have turned. The west fa-voured unitary families where only the couple and their children (that

too till eighteen only) lived together. Now our ways of all members liv-ing together has shown the world that there is satisfaction and love in sharing and companion-ship. Especially during lockdown and quaran-tine when blood rela-tions are Godsend.

Let the New Year bring in prosperity and acceptance by the world of our culture, our people, our food and behaviour. Let this new decade be the Decade of India. It is possible if all of us decide to be proud of our culture, and our people. We will be num-ber one in the world. We will lead while the oth-ers follow. The writer is a freelancer from Navi mumbai

Vashi police raided a hookah par-lour on Wednesday night and

arrested 32 youths and 4 employees. Police also seized tobacco and other materials required for smoking hoo-kah from the hookah parlour.

To curb the spread of the corona virus, the state government has is-sued strict instructions to all types of hotels, pubs and bars. Suresh Mengde, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cir-cle-1, had received information that the R.B.D Lounge located in Shakti Arcade in APMC Sector-19D runs a hookah parlour, which is in violation to the rules imposed by the govern-

ment in the backdrop of Covid. Ac-cordingly, Mengde ordered action against the hookah parlour. According to the report, a crime detection team led by senior police inspector Sanjeev Dhumal of Vashi police station raided the hookah parlour at around 8 pm on Wednesday.

During the raid, police arrested 32 young men, as well as four employ-ees of the hookah parlour who were supplying the customers with hookah smoking materials. By Chandrashekhar Hendve65-year-old male patient resi-

dent of Nerul came to Terna Spe-ciality Hospital & Research Centre with lower urinary tract complaints suggestive of benign enlargement of prostate. However, on detailed inves-tigations doctors found that the pa-tient had an 11 cm diameter tumour in his left adrenal with uncontrolled hypertension. This patient was evalu-ated by the team of Urologist, endo-crinologist and physicians and they prepared the patient for surgery over a month. Given his uncontrolled hy-pertension and biochemistry sugges-tive of Pheochromocytoma, this sur-gery was risky with high degree of mortality and morbidity.

Commenting on this Dr. Nishant Kathale, Consultatnt Urology and Andrology from Terna Speciality Hospital said, “Angiomyolipoma, a benign form of tumor of mesen-

chymal origin, is characterized by smooth muscle cells, thick-walled blood vessels, and adipose tissue.

Angiomyolipoma is most commonly found in the kidney and in the extra-renal area in the liver. It is rarely re-

ported that angiomyolipoma is found in the retroperitoneum, spleen, bone, lung; ovary and so on. Adrenal tu-

mours of such nature are extremely rare. This tumour was above the left kidney, behind large intestines, com-

pressing on pancreas and spleen and had to be separated delicately from these organs and removed. Patient underwent surgery at the beginning of this month and was in ICU for 2 days. He got discharged within a week. The histopathological exami-nation of the tumour showed that he had an Angiomyolipoma of Adrenal gland with adrenal hyperplasia. It is an extremely rare tumour, with litera-ture reports of only 20 cases of ad-renal Angiomyolipoma in the world. As per Indian medical record this is 3rd patient in India before those 2 pa-tients were found this type of tumour in 2007 & 2014 respectively. The pa-tient was absolutely fine on follow up and has resumed work. Such dif-ficult and rare surgeries are routinely done at Terna Speciality Hospital & Research Centre in Navi Mumbai, which has a great team of specialists and super specialists."
