In the Hungarian language we use two different manners of addressing people: the formal and the informal. The informal language is used with friends or with the ones who agreed to use this. Sometimes the elderly or women ask the younger ones or men to address them by using the informal language. This way the conversation can be much more intimate and confidential. Young people always use the informal language when they talk to each other.

The formal language is used in offices, in a student-teacher relationship or when we talk to elderly people. They say that the formal language expresses more respect, but of course even by using the informal language we can be polite and respectful.

When using the formal and informal language you’ll see that some expressions are the same in both manners and some of them are different.
