CarlsenwaslatercoachedattheNorwegianCollegeofEliteSportbythecountry'stopplayer,Grandmaster(GM)SimenAgdestein,[10]whointurncitesNorwegianfootballmanagerEgil"Drillo"Olsenasakeyinspirationforhiscoachingstrategy.[2]In2000,AgdesteinintroducedCarlsentoTorbjrnRingdalHansen,anInternationalMaster(IM)andformerNorwegianjuniorchampion,asRingdalservedaoneyearsiviltjeneste(analternativecivilianserviceprogramme)atthecollege.Overthecourseofthisyear,Carlsen'sratingrosefrom904inJune2000,to1907.Carlsen'sbreakthroughoccurredintheNorwegianjuniorteamschampionshipinSeptember2000,whereCarlsenscored3/5againstthetopjuniorplayersofthecountry,andaperformancerating(PR)ofabout2000.[11]Apartfromchess,whichCarlsenstudiedaboutthreetofourhoursaday,hisfavouritepastimesincludedfootball,skiing,andreadingDonaldDuckcomics.[12]Carlsenalsopracticedskijumpinguntiltheageoften.Hispersonalbestis21metres.[13]
