1 BOOKING A WEDDING / BLESSING

1.1 Start of the process – booking the ceremony

Thank you for considering us for your wedding / blessing venue! You have chosen the unique place

middle of the beautiful Lappish forest. We want to help you to make your experience as memorable as

possible. You can get married officially or arrange only the Lappish ceremony with us. These ceremonies

are getting more and more popular each year. These couples have got married officially in their own

country and they will arrange the ceremony / celebration at SnowVillage. Blessing can be hold either at

the ice chapel or wooden chapel and all extras presented here are available. Also all the prices will be the

same. The blessing contains Lappish mystique stories and drumming but you can also have it as “normal”

wedding ceremony if you wish.

Here we have put together info package for you. Please read through the document carefully before

sending the paperwork. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us:

When booking your weddings /blessing, the very first thing is to settle a date and time for the ceremony

(please check the availability with us). We only have one wedding each day in order to make your day

private and special. Please note that the civil ceremony is only available outside magistrate’s open-

ing hours. The first available slot is at 16:30. Thus ceremonies over weekend are also possible. For

blessing please contact the wedding coordinator as the ceremony earlier than 16.30 may be possible.

During the weekend you can choose the time yourself. After the ceremony date is set and confirmed you

should find flights and warm accommodation to yourselves and to your guests. We have few cabins near

SnowVillage if you want to stay close by but we can also give you some hints for good places to stay.

Civil ceremony is rather short. An example of the ceremony you can find from the appendices. To make

the ceremony more personal, you can add your own vows, readings and songs. However, we would like

to know this in advance and it is also important to notify magistrate of these kinds of extras. Best is if


you can provide magistrate information when the extras will take place and copies of the texts,

too.

1.2 Confirmation of your booking

Once you have booked the ceremony and we have received confirmation from the magistrate we will

send you a confirmation with a booking number and 495€ deposit for your booking. The confirmation

we send is very important because it:

- shows what has been booked for you

- what is the price for the services

- timing for the services, e.g. time for the ceremony, pick up times for transfers etc.

When you add something into your booking we will always send you a revised confirmation. It is very

important that you always check the confirmation carefully. If you find any items missing or any mistakes,

please inform us immediately. What is not there on the confirmation has not been booked, and your

day will be arranged exactly as it appears on the confirmation.

1.3 Payments

To settle the payment, the easiest option is to pay advance either vie NETS payment service (we send

you the link) or invoice. Then you do not need to think about money on your special day.

We will send you the invoice or link with paying instructions beforehand. 60 days before the wedding

day we will send you the whole invoice and you have 45 days to make the payment.


2 BOOKING EXTRAS

Once the date, flights and accommodation have been booked, it is time to book the wedding extras

(prices found end of this document). If you wish to have a wedding meal at SnowVillage, please note this

already when booking the wedding. Other extras should be booked prior to the wedding at the latest as

follows:

- one month before wedding:

o reindeer sleigh rides

o photographer

o fireworks

- at least 3 weeks before wedding:

o coach and taxi transfers

- at least 2 weeks before wedding:

o flowers

o wedding meal arrangements

o ice bar arrangements

2.1 Wedding / blessing package

Wedding / blessing package includes: all necessary paperwork with Lapland’s magistrate, magis-

trate’s fees, rent for the chapel (ice or wooden) preparations and wedding coordinator’s services in

SnowVillage. Note: Magistrate has to receive the necessary paperwork and documents no later than

four weeks before the wedding.

Ice chapel

Temperature in the ice chapel is always between -2 and -5 Celsius degrees. As elsewhere in SnowVillage, also in the chapel it might a bit slippery every now and then. Therefore, whenever possible, it is good to wear proper winter clothing and winter boots. Ice chapel changes its shape and interior decoration every year, but is big enough for app. 60 guests. Chapel is deco-rated with candles. You can also order flower arrangement to decorate the altar table. If you wish to play music when you enter the chapel, please let us know in advance what music you want to play so we can set the player.

Wooden chapel


Chapel of St. John has served wedding couples since 2000. Each log has been gathered around Finland and brought to Lainio to create this beautiful and cozy wilderness chapel. Oldest logs are from 1914. Inside the chapel there are seats for app. 20 guests. For the ceremony we set fire on the fireplace and decorate the chapel with candles. Temperature is normally around +18 Celsius degrees. It is possible to play music when you enter the chapel, but please inform us about this in ad-vance.

2.2 Menu at our restaurants

We have created great Lappish menu for our restaurants. You can choose your wedding menu from

a ´la carte list. The menu will be different every year. You will get it from your wedding coordinator.

Please let us know latest 2 weeks before hand your choice!

2.3 Rides to the chapel

Arriving to the chapel by reindeer sleigh

This ride will wait you in a crossroad approximately 500 meters before the Snow Village. The reindeer

herdsman will assist you into the sleigh and guides the reindeer sleigh to the chapel. The ride is 1 km

and will last approximately 10 minutes.

Arriving to the chapel by snowmobiles

Snowmobiles are waiting for you on crossroad that leads to SnowVillage. Before driving, proper driving

and safari instructions will be given to you by your safari guide. The drive is about 5 kilometers long

and will take approx. 10-15 min depending on the speed. Valid driving license is needed for driving.

Overalls, helmets and gloves will be brought to your accommodation in Levi / Ylläs. Please let us know

where you are staying at.

2.4 Photos

Wedding photos, option 1


Price includes photos taken during the ceremony in the chapel as well as photos taken in the surround-

ings. Price includes some basic image processing and thus the photos will be mailed to your E-mail

address within 1-2 weeks.

Wedding photos, option 2

This price includes a meeting with the photographer to plan the photo shooting. On the wedding day

photographer is at your disposal all together 8 hours which can be divided into shorter sections so that

you get photos for example of your make up in the morning and photos taken during the wedding meal.

Price includes some basic image processing and thus the photos will be mailed to your E-mail address

within 1-2 weeks.

2.5 Flowers

You can choose the colour of the flowers.


2.6 Specials

Professional fireworks

Hearts in the sky! Fireworks are a spectacular way to highlight your wedding and surprise your quests in

an unexpected way. Our professional shows are set-up and made by trained and authorized professionals.

In order to acquire all the necessary permits, fireworks must be booked no later than three weeks in

advance. You have 2 options smaller and bigger show. The smaller lasts 3 min and the bigger about 6

min.

2.7 Music for the ceremony

If you wish to play music in the chapel, it is good to E-mail / let us know the songs us in advance. Also,

if you wish to have some special decoration on the tables during celebration, please send it to us in

advance so we can prepare the tables early enough. If there is anything that you require and is not listed

on the wedding extras, please ask and we will see what we can do.

3 OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS

3.1 General Information

These documents need to be sent only if you want to have the official ceremony. For blessing, no paper

work needed!

Official district of the magistrate of Lapland (Lapin maistraatti) is the province of Lapland. Lapin

maistraatti, Kittilä examines your impediments to marriage. SnowVillage is located in the municipality of

Kittilä, in an area called Lainio. Thus the place of your wedding is Kittilä, Finland. Your local registrar

will ask from you what the place of your wedding is.

Magistrate has to have the completed paperwork (originals) at least four (4) weeks prior to the wedding.

Mailing the documents to Finland takes app. 1-2 weeks and for local registrar you should reserve app. 3

weeks. Once you have the paperwork ready, please mail it directly to Lapin maistraatti in order

to avoid unnecessary circulation of important documents.

When you mail your documents, please state your name and place of the wedding as well as time for the

ceremony clearly so that magistrate knows for which weddings the papers belong to. Also, if you include

your e-mail address too, they will confirm directly to you as well that documents are all in order. If you

are unsure whether your paperwork is ready or not or if you have any questions, please e-mail all of your

questions regarding the paperwork to us. Over the Internet you can read all sort of things, but please

note that we know the best what paperwork is required.

Here in Finland each person has an identity number (formed from birthday + individual sequence of

numbers and letters). If you do not have anything similar in your home country, please state as an iden-

tity number only your birthday.

As everything is planned and all the documents are finalized in advance, there is no rule for being in

Finland certain hours or days before the ceremony takes place. In theory you can even arrive directly

from the airport to your wedding.

Here is a list of the four (4) documents magistrate needs from couples:

Documents needed at least one month before wedding are:

1. Request for examination of the impediment to marriage (see attachments)


(important: there should be signature attested by two witnesses)

x Request for examination of no impediments to marriage should be completed jointly by

both.

x NOTE! signatures attested by two witnesses

o Witnesses has to be over 15 years old.

x Three boxes below “Certificate of the examination of the impediments to marriage”, right

box to tick is: “is requested to be deposited with the person examining the impediments to marriage for join-

ing the parties in marriage”.

o This simply means that magistrate will have all the paperwork until the wedding day,

notary public will bring the documents to the ceremony with him / her

x Note! This is not same as certificate of no impediment

x This document starts the whole process here in Finland. If this document is miss-

ing, your paperwork will not be processed.

2. Information about foreigner in Finland -form (see attachments)

The engaged parties can give their own information with the Information about foreign in Finland -

form. We can see there for example Surname after marriage. We need that information for the Mar-

riage Certificate. Both parties should fill in one (and sign it yourself).

3. Passport copies certified by Notary public or solicitor + Apostilles (for both parties)

4. Original certificates of no impediment to marriage abroad from home country +

Apostilles (for both parties) Important! Although it is the original document, magistrate in Finland

still requires apostilles as well.

Apostille is the certificate which legalises your documents in our country. It confirms that the

signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine. Please note that certificate of no impedi-

ment is only valid for 3 months i.e. it can be dated only 3 months prior to the wedding.

Prior to a marriage, potential reason the marriage are investigated. The purpose of investigating

the potential reasons for preventing a marriage is to ensure that there is nothing preventing the

marriage.


3.2 British citizens

All the rules and regulations explained above apply to British citizens. Superintendent registrar’s certifi-

cate of no impediment to marriage is available from the local Civil Centre. Apostille is available from

London, Foreign and Commonwealth office.

3.3 Other nationalities

All of the rules and regulations explained in section 2.1 apply to all nationalities. Please note that the

paperwork has to be supplied in English, Finnish or Swedish for the magistrate of Lapland. Most often

e.g. certificate of no impediment is supplied in your mother tongue. In this case the document has to be

translated into English/Finnish/Swedish by an authorized translator and also the translation has to be

with apostille.

Certificate of non-impediment in different nationalities:

- in Australia: "No record" result of search (Available from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Mar-

riages) and there has also been Certificate of no impediment to marriage from Australian High com-

mision

- in Ireland: Certificate of capasity to contract a marriage (Available from the Minister for Foreign Af-

fairs)

- in Germany: Ehef higkeitszeugnis (Available from the local Standesamt) (please ask also for German

request for examination of impediment to marriage)

- in Netherlands: Verklaring van huwelijksbevoegdheid (Available from the local Burgerlijke Stand)

- in Switzerland: Ehef higkeitszeugnis (Available from the local Zivilstandsamt)

China: engaged party has to be 21 years old before he/she can be joined in matrimony. Certificate of

marital status required as well as a document stating that marriage abroad is accepted by the Chinese law.

Spain: Apostille is available from Oficialía Mayor-Legalizaciones in Madrid.


Please state your nationality when booking your wedding. This way we can always check if there are any

special arrangements required or any restrictions.

4 ON THE SPECIAL DAY

You will have a wedding coordinator taking care of you on your special day. You can meet her at SnowVil-

lage beforehand if you wish and go through the day. On the wedding day when you arrive to SnowVillage,

the coordinator will be greeting you. She will explain the flow of the ceremony, take your guests to the

chapel, take the engaged party on their places, play the music for you, block entrance to the chapel and

after the ceremony we will help you during photographs before leading you to the ice bar / restaurant or

back to the coaches. Our staff will be present all the time so you do not have to worry about anything.

As long as you are dressed up and ready on time when transfer is picking you up - we will take care of

everything else.

If you have booked sleigh rides or snowmobile rides to the chapel, again our staff will meet you at the

starting point. If you have booked flowers, those will be handed to you when you arrive at Snow Village.

4.1 Ceremony and marriage certificate

Ceremony will be in English and as stated in the beginning, ceremony is short. There has to be two

witnesses (if you don’t have any our staff will be as witnesses) who need to sign the document at the end

of the ceremony. Witnesses need to be at least 15 years old. You as wedding couple do not have to sign

anything and you do not have to bring any IDs or any other paperwork with you.

You will get original marriage certificate in English and one copy with apostilles. More copies you can

get back home at your local registrar. Information on depositing marriage certificate in UK is available at

Most often once the official party of the ceremony is over, couple stays up at the altar and we proceed

for family photos if you have booked photographer. Once family photos and group photos (all the pos-

sible combinations you wish to have) are taken, it is time for the guests to have a look around Snow

Village and go to warm up while the portraits of the couple only are taken. Normally this is the point

when couple exits the chapel for the first time. Background music for photos does create a nice atmos-

phere.

4.2 Chapels and dressing for the wedding /blessing

Inside the SnowVillage temperature is always between -2 and -5 Celsius degrees, also inside the ice chapel.

Therefore it is important to dress up as well as possible. If you have a long hem on your wedding dress,

would anyone know you are wearing proper winter boots? And men can well wear thermals underneath

a suite without no-one knowing. Same goes for the guests: proper boots and winter clothes are a good

choice.

Inside the SnowVillage it is slippery every now and then. Also steps to the altar may be slippery so please

always step on the snow and not on the ice (same for the witnesses). If you have your ceremony in the

wooden chapel, temperature there is around +18 Celsius degrees, but you still need to walk to the chapel

from the parking area (app. 100m) and again, proper boots are a good choice.

Sleigh rides to the chapel can also be quite chilly so if you can, please take again your winter boots and a

good jacket / blanket. Also it is good to have gloves and something to cover your ears. Staff will then

take those from you before photos are taken and you are lead to the chapel.

Please note that confetti or rice is not allowed inside SnowVillage (including ice chapel and ice restau-

rant) as we are not able to clean the floors.

the surroundings where your wedding venue will take place


4.3 Reception at SnowVillage

After the ceremony you can have drinks at the ice bar or in the log restaurant and you can stay for a

wedding meal. Meal is possible both in the ice restaurant and in the log restaurant. If you wish to have a

dinner at our beautiful restaurants it is good to order the menu beforehand. It makes the service smooth

and relaxed for you. Also wedding cake is possible to order.

Log restaurant, Krouvi serve á la carte and there are choices from vegetarian to different meat and fish

options. Food requirements (such as gluten free meals) are taken into account once known in advance.

There are also options for children. In Ice restaurant we have only 3-course set menus. As the ice restau-

rant is very cold experience we recommend to have the wedding reception at Krouvi.

Normally tables are set up with table cloth and candles only, but if you wish to have something else please

mail it for us in advance and restaurant staff will arrange tables for you. Please note that due to the Finnish

alcohol law own drinks are not allowed. All the food services (including wedding cake) are also to be

booked from us when celebrating in our restaurants.
