FROM THE DIRECTOR

of the sea within the walls of the theatre Making this show accessible meant utilizing tools that indulge the senses, making sure nothing was rushed so the audience has processing time, and expanding upon the subtlety of theatre tricks to prevent it from being an overwhelming experience I also hope to inspire the audience to dive in and read classic literature and see that it isn’t as daunting as it may seem I would also like to thank the entire cast, crew, and creative team for this show It was the dedication and ideas of each and every one of them that has helped to elevate this piece to be what you are seeing today I am a better person and artist for having worked with all of them

This show is dedicated to my father, who always encouraged me to reach for the stars and achieve my dreams. No matter how big the fishes may be in my life, they will not defeat me.

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel about perseverance and grit; two things that all artists have been ferociously embodying in the last year and a half amidst the pandemic Its relevance has spanned 70 years because it beautifully depicts the struggles of the human experience As soon as I read the book, I knew that I needed to adapt it to the stage, and I wanted to do it in my own way For me this meant stripping it down and telling the story to the audience in a way that felt palpable, where you can feel the heartbeat and breath
