Trend Spotlight:Rose Quartz & Serenity

Fashion & Style

pg. 3 pg. 4

Picking up some new threads this spring? Be sure to pick up fabrics in rose quartz or blue serenity, the hottest colors this upcoming spring season. Rose quartz is a beautiful blushing pink, the ultimate touch of femininity. You can find this color in makeup, perfect for giving your skin a gorgeous glow and your cheeks the right amount of rosiness. You can also find this pretty pink in many different shades and tints of nail polish. This spring, we’re styling gladiators with sundresses for our dates, ballet flats with jeans for the weekends, and heels with playsuits for a more dressed up occasion because spring calls for a more playful, youthful vibe and using colors like Serenity, a soft pastel blue, will play a huge role in the outfits we style this season. A blue like this will catch the eye in a fun flirty way without being too bold. Serenity blue will also play a big part in the beauty de-partments as well, dominating in the eyeshadow aisle. You may be thinking that blue eyeshadow is outdated and so 80s retro but...“the trick, for making the look modern? Dick Page, who created the blue-eyed looks at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Tess Giberson, kept other make-up to a minimum to let the eyes really stand out, whilst Pat McGrath applied the colour in graphic blocks across the lids to prevent it from looking too retro.” (Vogue) Whether you are creating a smokey eye, a subtle hint of color, “a flash of electric blue on the lower lash line or in bold blocks of opaque colour across the lids” (Vogue) you can easily pull of this ultra spring look by keeping the rest of your makeup neutral and natural. Still looking for other ways to incorporate the hottest color trends of the season into your closet? Accessorize! Use jewelry, phone cases, handbags, sunglasses, and scarves to showcase your spring style. Gather inspiration from street style, bloggers, magazines, online stores, and runway shows or you can check out everything we’ve been looking at to add a bit of springtime color to every part of our ward-robe.

A Queen Within “In the game of chess, the queen is considered to be the most powerful and most unpredictable piece” (World Chess Hall of Fame). The queen is considered the most important chess piece because the player is able to move the queen any number of squares, in any direction on the board including horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. “In chess, it is theoretically possible for a player to attain a maximum of nine queens simultaneously on the board” (World Chess Hall of Fame). Just as Jacqueline Piatigorsky once said, “…with a chess set, it is impossible to be bored” (World Chess Hall of Fame). At the World Chess Hall of Fame in St. Louis there was an exhibit called A Queen Within. This exhibit “…ex-plores the unique relationship between power, risk-taking, and the queens evolving roles of femininity in chess and so-ciety…” (World Chess Hall of Fame). One person who was greatly inspired by the game of chess and overall the queen’s position in the game of chess was Alexander McQueen.......(Continued on next page)

pg. 9

In 1992 McQueen graduated from very presti-gious course work at Central Saint Martins College of design in London. During this time of his life he formed a society with Isabella Blow who was the Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue. He later on moved into her home and set up his own little studio. A few years later in March of 1995 McQueen presented his collection “Highland Rape”. This show was so controversial that it put him on the map and secured his position as Britain’s very own bad boy of the fashion industry. Several years later in 2007 McQueen’s very close friend and mentor, Isabella Blow, committed suicide. This took a toll on Alexander McQueen and he dedicated his spring collection to Isa-bella, La Dame Bleue. The collection by Alexander McQueen that brings us back to the World Chess Hall of Fame that was most definitely inspired by the game of chess and the all-powerful queen was his collection It’s Only A Game. The concept of this collection was a chess match. The knights were in prosthetic corsets, the queens wore poufy skirts, and the bishops were dressed in kimonos. These “chess pieces” were placed on an illuminated chessboard and were instructed where to go by a robotic voice over an intercom system. This was portrayed as a real life chess game with real life people as the chess pieces. McQueen’s main inspiration for this collection, other than chess, was the queen. The queen is considered the most important and most powerful piece in the game. The queen is also extremely unpredictable considering the fact that she is able to move to any position on the board that she wants. She always has two sides to her, light and dark. Alexander once stated, “I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” (Vogue) This quote could be directly related to the queen since she is the so powerful and unpredictable, which would be a good reason for anyone to be afraid of her. In conclusion, while I was at the World Chess Hall of Fame I had a great experience. While looking at all the displays I shocked and extremely impressed with all the pieces. They were all incredibly amazing and creative. One of my favorite pieces that I saw at this exhibit was a piece by Alexander McQueen called The Girl Who Lived in the Tree. This piece was a white dress with embroidery and was created in 2008. This dress was definitely one of my favorites because it’s so simple com-pared to all the other garments in the exhibit. The dress is also flowy and reminds me of a tree nymph. I would most definitely buy and wear this dress if I were able to. While I was at the World Chess Hall of Fame I also learned that many of the pieces were actually worn by quite a few celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Lopez. I suggest that anyone who is interested in fashion or chess should see this exhibit for the simple reason that it’s interesting and everyone will something whether it’s about chess or not. Begin by grabbing a 1-2 inch sec-tion of hair from the front side of your head and securing it to the back of your head with a bobby pin.

Grab a 1-2 inch section of hair from under the piece you pinned back and braid it; then tie it off with an elastic.

Grab another 1-2 inch section of hair (next to the braid you just made) from under the piece you pinned back and braid it; then tie it off with an elastic.

Grab another 1-2 section of hair from the other side of your head and braid it;then tie it off with an elastic
