Magazine PlanningTitle ideas: Illicit Rock- Attracts the young audience with the idea of forbidden and then the music genre is explicit. Transmission- As it relates to radio and therefore music whilst having a cultured flair. Bedrock- Playing on the word for foundations which suggests that the magazine is the basis for good music and explicitly has the genre of music in the name.

Magazine PlanningThe Genre:From the results for my survey, Rock was the genre most popular, and therefore will be the genre that my magazine is based on. I will use magazines such as Rocksound and Kerrang! For inspiration.

Magazine PlanningThe Pricing and Publication Pattern:My survey’s results showed that monthly magazines are preferred, therefore this will be the publication pattern for my magazine.

Looking at the prices of other monthly rock magazines, they are roughly between £4.00 and £5.00. I noticed that the newer magazines where around the £4.00 mark and therefore as my magazine would be new it will be priced at £3.99 also in order to stick to the prices of the market.

Magazine PlanningThe Reader Profile:Using my survey and focus group, I am able to get a generalised reader survey for my magazine. That I can later use to generate a target audience and then plan the magazine content based upon.‘The average reader is female aged between 15 and 22. Living around Yorkshire and the Humber, they enjoy rock music and often support their favourite musicians by buying merchandise or posters. Their most preferred magazine style is by the magazine Kerrang! as it incorporates band interviews and contains a lot of images to break up text. Due to its range of products, Tesco is the favourite supermarket to shop at with 100% of readers agreeing. The most commonly used social media platforms include Facebook, Reddit and Snapchat with 2/3 of readers as a member of all of these sites.’

Magazine PlanningColour Scheme:

Following my experience for fonts from similar magazines, the font and colour scheme will be gender neutral however fit the theme and genre of the magazine.

Front Page Dummy

In order to prepare for the photo shoot and designing of my front cover, I created a dummy page as a plan.

Page 10: Magazine planning

Contents Page DummyLeft hand page will be split into two columns with one feature photograph which teases the double page spread.

Numbers andthe header will be bolder than the rest of the text for easier navigation.

The right hand page will give greater detail into some of the main articles within the magazine, using images to break up the text. This side, as it will have generally smaller text will be split into three columns.

Double Page Spread Dummy

Feature photo will be the largest of the photos and fade to black before the text begins at the bottom.

The text will be split into three columns on both pages to give the article consistency and follow the conventions of other magazines.

The right hand side will continue the three columns of writing whilst having boxed filler photographs that will be used to break up the text. Overlapping photos create a sense of busyness that works with the genre.
