Crazy Cats by Jean Huntley

Jean Huntley with her Crazy Cats in progress

During one of the Rags to Riches’ weekly hook-ins, rughooking artist, Sue Russel dropped in with some of herpatterns to share with the group.

Sue’s whimsical ‘Scaredy Cats’ caught Jean Huntley’seye. Although Jean’s favourite designs are fine shadedflorals and she has hooked many of these during the pasttwenty years, she knew that this primitive pattern wouldbe a special birthday gift for her great- granddaughter,Jordyn, who lives in Tantallon, NS.

The mat, which Jean re-named ‘Crazy Cats’, is hookedentirely of #4 and #5 wool strips, or as Jean says, “leftoverodds and ends that I dyed in the past.” She chose hercolours as she went along, beginning with the cat in themiddle, followed by the second and the third, beforehooking the smaller motifs and the background.

As you can see, Jean realized her goal of creating contrastbetween the three cats, by varying the colours and theirfacial expressions. No doubt, Jordyn will enjoy this lively, fun birthday gift for years to come!

The Cushion Project beautiful it will be in August, 2019, when the cushionswill have their debut.

Many of you have heard about Remi Levesque’s project“200 hooked cushions for my 200th” for the BarachoisHistoric Church, in Barachois, NB. I had signed on forcushion #67 and completed it months ago.

A group of the Carnegie Rug Hookers were invited toAnn Irving’s cottage, near Parlee Beach, in June, so Icontacted Remi, to pass on my cushion. Remi kindlyoffered to give us a tour of the refurbished church.

It is such a beautiful space, lovingly restored by acommunity who were brilliant enough to not destroy thehistoric artifacts from the 1800’s. Standing in the upperlevel, looking down upon the pews, I can imagine how

Our group was so inspired, that we chose a cushion tocover, as a group project. It’s over 6 feet long!

This is such a wonderful project. I urge you to checkout their Facebook Page “200 coussins hooké pour mon200ième/200 hooked cushions for my 200th”. You maycontact Remi Levesque at [email protected].

Tribute toLinda MacDonald

The loss of Linda MacDonald, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, has been deeply felt in the rug hookingcommunity. For almost 30 years, she touched everyonewith her talent, commitment and dedication. During thistime, Linda accomplished much in rug hooking, startingout as the business owner of Rags to Rugs Craft Shoppein Pictou, Nova Scotia. In 1995, she became a teacherand mentor, introducing many to the art of rug hookingthrough classes and workshops. A hard-working individual, she was always involved at the community level.

A great believer in preserving the past, Linda passionatelypromoted the Heritage Rug Registry and purchased therights to the Bluenose and Garrett pattern stencils.

Linda exhibited strong leadership qualities as PastPresident of the Guild and Teachers Branch. With keenorganizational skills, she earned our respect as awonderful Rug School Director. Small but mighty andvery direct, she could take charge and command ourattention. We appreciated her dry wit and sense ofhumour. Her daily quote at assembly and lovely wordsto live by, “today I will make magic happen”, brought outthe smiles.

Linda is greatly missed as a friend and colleague withinthe Teachers Branch. She was a strong supporter ofthe Branch and its values and ideals. Often speakingher mind, she was practical and a voice of reason pushingfor change when it was needed. She was a generousand kind mentor. We fondly recall the fellowship andgood humour we enjoyed with Linda over the years atRug School and our Professional Development retreats.Such endearing qualities as her broad grin and chuckle, her quick wit, and even her infamous snoring in residence, brought levity to our gatherings.

Linda, our friend and valued member of the rug hookingcommunity will be greatly missed.

- Ruth Downing, President Teachers Branch

There is no set image, no formal idea nor any specificdirection, just stuff. Hidden in each brown paper bag isa random assortment of treasures. The mystery bagmight contain bits and pieces of jewellery, wool, yarn, buttons, gloves, wire, pot scrubbers, scarfs and otherwondrous materials. The only requirement is a minimumsize and that most of the items should be used.

This collection is the starting point for the show InspirationFrom A Brown Paper Bag. This method of workingrequires a lot of trial and error, of great ideas and not sogreat ideas, of re-thinking and re-working but most of allperseverance. The result is a truly creative endeavournot just in the work but in the minds of the participants. They push beyond the traditional method of thinking, beyond a comfortable means of hooking pieces and learnto incorporate new mediums and new methods. These“hookers” learn to go beyond the scope of what hasbeen their experience before this challenge. This is trulyinspiring and all from a little brown paper bag.

The show was launched in a small village on the southshore of Nova Scotia, Petite Rivière, and is in Yarmouthfor the month of August, later to be in Sydney, NS. Theparticipants are from Nova Scotia, USA, Quebec andOntario, all of whom enjoy the art and camaraderie ofrug hooking.

The Brown Paper BagChallenge

Most artists start witha visual image, a setidea and workthematically. Thenthey use their ownunique skills andexperiences totransform the imageor concept intosomething special. The Brown PaperBag Challenge is alittle different in thatthe artist starts withthe materials.

How to Hook a CircleWhy won’t my circles lie flat? Joan Albert faced thiscommon challenge when hooking her 31 inch roundcircles mat. After several unsuccessful attempts whenstarting in the center of the circle, Joan came up withher own less conventional method. Here’s how she did it.Row 1First half of row:

• Start by hooking the outside edge of the circle.• Hook one half of the circle’s outside edge in a

clockwise direction.• Cut your wool.

Second half of row:• Go back to where you started. Pull your wool

strip up in the very first hole that you beganwith.

• Hook the second half of the outside edge of thecircle in a counterclockwise direction.

• Finish in the very same hole in which you finishedthe first half of the circle.

• Cut your wool strip.• Note: Be careful not to pack your loops. Also,

aim each loop toward the centre of the circle.Row 2

• Start your second row at a different place thanyour first row and then you’ll finish the row in adifferent place as well. Fit the second row snuglybut not too tightly against the first row.

• Note: If you begin and end every row in thesame place, the tags will create a visible ridgethrough the entire circle.

• Continue in the same way as the first row: halfof the row clockwise, the other half counterclockwise.

Subsequent RowsHook the remaining rows in the same way, each rowgradually decreasing in size, always aiming your loopstoward the center of the circle. The BackgroundJoan hooked one row of black around the outside of thelarger circles to help keep their shape, but she didn’t feelit was necessary with the smaller circles. She randomlyhooked the rest of the background using the same colourof wool.

Joan Albert is a resident of Kentville, a long-time memberof RHGNS and the Spinners hooking group.

The Riverview Rug Hookers met every Wednesdaymorning and Tuesday evening for rug hooking, sharingknowledge and of course generalized fun.

Their fearless leader, Chris Antle, was approached bythe Town of Riverview, asking that the rug hookers havea display in conjunction with the Sunfest Celebration andArt in the Park. After brief discussion, we all thought itwould be nice to have the display in the board room ofSoutheastern Insurance, who have been so gracious inproviding us with their board room for our rug hookingget-togethers. They assured us that this would be fineand we could use their kitchen as well. In that case, wedecided to have tea and cookies, under tents in the yardand our displays of art inside.

June 30th arrived, the hottest day of the month! Luckilythere was a slight breeze and the display area was air-conditioned. To say it was a success is anunderstatement. Close to 50 people came and enjoyedthe displays as well as tea, coffee, Chris’s rubarb punch, cookies, squares and an awesome chocolate fondue withfruit. Towards the end of the day the wind became alittle stronger so the chocolate fondue started literallyblowing in the wind, but hey, who doesn’t like extrachocolate on their cookies?

It is amazing what a small group of like-minded friendscan do. Some of us have decided not to meet over thesummer months in order to enjoy the season, but theTuesday evening group continues to meet from time totime with an open invitation to the rest of us. We will beattending some hook-ins over the summer months andlook forward to new adventures in the fall.

Organization isHalf the Battle“What a good idea!” Exclaimed a rug hooker whonoticed that I had several colours of wool organized in aplastic container with sections - You know: the kind usedby supermarket delis to package assorted fresh fruit. Ijust assumed everyone knew about these handy light-weight containers. Her comment got me to thinking:Perhaps both experienced and beginning rug hookerswould benefit from sharing what I’ve learned from mygroup, the Spinners of the Annapolis Valley, about waysto keep wool organized and easy to transport.

It’s so much more than a bag! I swear that we rughookers must be keeping the Zip Lock company inbusiness. Mary Ellen Carpenter keeps her zip lock bagsorganized. She numbers and groups them withclothespins to correspond with a particular section ofher 23" x 46" geometric stained-glass design.

Got Milk? Cathy Oomen prefers milk carton bags overthe zip lock, because they are stiff enough to stand up ontheir own. No more rifling through your satchel for theright bag. Simply staple as many of them together as youneed, place them on the table and you’ve got neatlyseparated colours at your fingertips.

J-Cloth goes a long way! Joan Bogle recommends aninexpensive and light weight holder that keeps your woolstrips tidy and compact. Take one J-Cloth and fold it inhalf. With scissors, cut pairs of slots in the cloth. As thephoto illustrates, each of the pairs of slots holds one value. You can roll it up and keep it closed with a ribbon.

Get Crackin’! Joan Albert recently discovered that eggcartons are a perfect way to organize and transport themany colours and values in her fine cut 23" x 46" orientalpiece. Each value fits in one opening in the carton. Theopenings are labeled to correspond with the numbers inher colour plan. She also writes the dye formula on theinside of the cover. The cartons are light weight, fit easilyinto her bag and they cost nothing, because who doesn’tlike eggs?

Where’s the Beef? I spent almost two years workingon a landscape that required close to fifty different coloursand values, with wool cuts ranging from #3 to #7.Keeping track of the wool was a challenge but meattrays and post-it notes came to the rescue. I used severaltrays for each section of the mat, labelling each accordingto their value and cut. Muffin tins can also do the trick, particularly when working with smaller amounts of wooland fine shading.

I get by with a little help from my friends.Plastic bags, clothespins, fruit containers, j-cloths, eggand milk cartons, meat trays, and pouches - there arecountless ingenious ways to keep our wool organizedwhile we visit our hooking group, attend rug school, orjust pull up the loops at home. Thanks to everyone in mySpinners group for sharing their ideas. These inexpensivesuggestions can save our sanity, particularly whenworking on larger mats, but most importantly, we canapply the money we save to feed our wool ‘habit’!

I bought it at rug school! If you prefer a more compactand aesthetically pleasing way to carry plastic bags, JeanMacDonald’s attractive, fold-up pouch may be the choicefor you. Purchased at rug school, it’s quilted, it’s colourful, and it has several small bags sewn inside.

Fundy GroupHope everyone has had a safe and happy summer. TheFundy group hosted a hook-in on their regular Wednesdayin June with 76 hookers attending. The Lighthouse RugHookers from Bridgewater were our guests for the day,as well, a special invitation was extended to all 9 groupsin our region. Because our region is so large it is oftendifficult for members to come to our regular meetings sothis was a great chance for everyone to attend. Members from the Sea Gull Rug Hookers from Digbywere unable to attend as one of their own hookers, DianeSkinner married John Lukeman, the same day. Diane isa fun-loving gal who keeps their group entertained withher antics and everyone enjoyed her lovely wedding.

The Nicholsville Rug Rats will soon be finalizing plansfor this years Fall Fling. I am sure it will be a great dayas usual.

A finger food lunch was provided with one of the highlightsbeing a tray of sandwiches with green filling that hadeveryone guessing what was in it and asking for therecipe. It was Elizabeth MacGregor’s recipe and shehas graciously given it to me, so I am including it herefor everyone.

Halifax NewsWhat a great time the Halifax region is having at eachof their groups.

The Saint Margarets Bay Schoolhouse Rug Hookers hadtheir annual raffle for a group hooked rug. They decidedto do a geometric rug so that everybody could participateno matter what level of hooking they are at. It wasdesigned as a group, worked on as a group, sold ticketsas a group, and at the end of June at their closing dinnerthey drew the winning ticket.  It was won by their veryown Roberta Palmer.

A busy group, the Library Loopers, meet up at the KeshenGoodman Library in Clayton Park every Friday from10am to 1pm! It’s a beautiful, well-lit area for hookingand, surrounded by books! Contact is Cathy Bamwoya,[email protected].

The Kingfisher group, who meet on Mondays, took partin a wet felting workshop led by Wendy Harris.  Themain objective was to make balls!  Lots of small ballswith which to make jewelry.  They learned a lot and hada lot of fun.

This has been a wonderful year as Regional Directorand my term comes to an end in October.  I’d like tothank everyone in the guild and the groups within myregion.  It has been a great learning experience.  PerhapsI will be back in the future.  This year I will be focusingall my energy on my role as rug school registrar.

Friday Friends NewsOur group the Friday Friends have been busy bees. Wehave a display of our work which opened this spring atthe Hooked Rug Museum of North America. A group road tripwith two CRVs loaded with our members went to seethe display and topped it off with a great lunch inHubbards.

Special Resolution Notice:By-Laws comprise the fundamental rules that define ourorganization. The RHGNS uses “Roberts Rules ofOrder”. Robert’s Rules of Order is a guide forconducting meetings and making decisions as a group.

At the RHGNS’s Post Annual Board of Directors’Meeting on October 21, 2017, a motion was made byDwight Gallagher, seconded by Cathy Lowe “to form anad hoc committee to consist of a minimum of 5 (five)people to review and revise the By-Laws as deemednecessary.” The motion was carried.

The ad hoc By-Law Review Committee consists ofRHGNS Members: Shirley Bradshaw, Helen Serrao,Chris Hay, Judy Sadler and Linda Alderdice.

Over the past several months this committee hasconducted a review of our current By-Laws and reviewedcomments and suggestions made by our membership toclarify and update some of the content of the By-Laws.

Our current By-Laws state: “Special Resolution” meansa resolution passed by not less than three-fourths ofsuch members entitled to vote as are present at ageneral meeting for which notice specifying theintention to propose the resolution as a specialresolution has been duly given.

Notice of any amendments shall be distributed to allmembers at least thirty days before the AGM.

This is to provide notice of a Special Resolution whichwill be presented at our Annual General Meeting onOctober 20, 2018.

Please take the time to review the Draft Revised By-Laws over the next several weeks in preparation for themeeting in October.

- Linda Alderdice, President, RHGNS

Some of our members have enriched themselves bytaking in a retreat or two, rug school and some hookingget togethers. Linda MacDonald came in April for a oneday course on making patterns and Lucy Richard joined usin June for another one day of dyeing in mason jars.

We have demoed rug hooking at a lively wool gatheringand will be doing so again in August, at our local exhibitionin Truro. We’re looking forward to the Wallace hook-inand getting back together at our weekly gatherings.
