MAGAZINE July 2015
Hello and welcome to our July issue of the magazine.
June saw the choir’s annual trip out to sing Evening Prayer. This year
it was at Cartmel Priory. As opposed to last year, the weather this
time was much better which added to everyone’s enjoyment of the
day. There are some photographs at the back of the magazine and a
report from Tracy which helps capture the day.
July sees the Wives Table Top Sale on the 11th and Open Gardens
on the 25th & 26th of July. Full details of which gardens are open will
follow shortly. The cost to view all the gardens is £3. A good
weekend’s entertainment. All we need is good weather to make it
special.
July kicks off with the ordination of
Marcus Bull at Ripon Cathedral at
3pm on the 4th July. I hope as
many of you as possible will go and
support him on the day. Marcus will
be preaching the day after (5th) at
both churches. I am sure that on
behalf of everyone at the two
Churches I can wish Marcus a
happy and prosperous ministry.
Congratulations Marcus
Over the last couple of years a lot of photographs have been taken of
Church and community events. If you have internet access you can
now view them all from the Church website. To get to the website do
a search on Erringden Benefice. Once on the website, towards the
bottom of the page, you will see a heading ’Look at our Photo Albums
on Flicker’. Click the link and it will take you to the albums There is
lots to see so get reminiscing. Also on the website you will find links
to the Church magazine (IN COLOUR) and the latest Erringden
Eagle.
Enjoy the read —Alan
The Wives group met in June and were transported to Venice
via beautiful slides and photographs from Kathryn Ogden.
The reflections in the water and sunsets were very beautiful.
July is going to be a busy month for us as we have our Table Top Sale on Saturday July 11th.
Come along and see if there is something to tempt you as well as tea, coffee, bacon butties and cakes.
Our speaker in July is Sue Nuttall who is speaking about marathon running.
A date for your diary is August 20th when we have an open meeting. Our speaker is Pat Osborne and she will speak about the ‘The mysterious life of Agatha Christie’. The meeting starts at 8.00p.m. Jackie
Events in the world and our own country often spark mixed
emotions as we read, see and think about them. Perhaps the events
in Charleston in June is one
such event that invokes all
sorts of thoughts and
emotions as 9 members of a
black Christian Church are
gunned down during a Bible
Study.
Did you watch the
indictment of Dylann Roof
for the murders? What has
staggered most people was
the way in which those most
hurt by the loss of a loved
one openly forgave Roof for
his heinous crime.
Whether we agree or not with their act to forgive, we cannot help but
be amazed and astounded—no hate, no thirst for revenge, no
bitterness—just love. What sort of people are these who can forgive
such a man? Put simply they are Christian people living out what
they are called to do by Christ. That is, to forgive and overcome hate
with love.
This doesn’t mean they are not hurting or their pain and grief has
been washed away. They will most probably hurt for the rest of their
lives on earth.
We at the two Churches of St John’s (Cragg Vale) and St Michael’s
(Mytholmroyd) are currently looking at the Lord’s Prayer in a series of
Sunday sermons. As I think of the events in Charleston my mind is
drawn to part of the Lord’s Prayer ‘Forgive us our sins (trespasses)
as we forgive those who sin against us’ Jesus tells us that unless we
forgive we cannot be forgiven. That is a very, very serious statement
by Jesus and we need to pay heed to it as our life depends on it.
So why do we need to forgive? Put simply we all do some bad
things, some a lot, lot worse than others. If we sit in judgement on
others and offer no hope of forgiveness, then we can’t expect
forgiveness for our wrong doings.
However there is another serious reason why we need to forgive, and
that is the damage un-forgiveness can do to us. If somebody wrongs
me and I get hyper angry and hate that person and see no good in
them and get bitter and cynical who is damaged me or them? Worse
still it often affects my view of other people and i could end up taking
it out on the ones I love. Do I become suspicious of other peoples
motives? Do I start not trusting people? It is me who gets damaged
by the very powerful emotions that can result from being unwilling to
forgive.
So how does one go about forgiving? The worst thing is to try and
ignore the emotions you feel. You may need to acknowledge the fact
that you don’t want to forgive but you need to.
If you have a faith then tell God, tell Jesus about how you feel. You
may need to confide in a close friend, a family friend or the vicar. You
need to talk. But you need to be honest and say you are struggling to
forgive if that is the case. It is not easy but something we need to
learn to do.
By forgiving somebody we don’t mean it’s ok what you did so carry on
doing it to others. The law is there to protect people and it is up to the
law to administer justice for wrongdoing. Anger, hate and bitterness
has no part in justice. Roof hates black people. If I hate Roof am I
any different than him? No, we need to learn to forgive as it will stop
us turning into the very thing that harmed us.

Hi my name is Rosie and I am the vicarage dog.
Have you ever thought why dogs can hear at 200 metres what you
humans can only hear at 20 metres or why our sense of smell is
hundreds if not thousands of times better than yours? Perhaps once
your senses were as good as ours.
This is pure speculation but let me explain. I don’t know whether you
believe literally or metaphorically the story in the Bible about Adam
and Eve and God placing them in the garden of Eden to live. But let’s
say it’s true. Although we don’t know the size of the garden I think we
can assume it was fairly big as it involved parts of four rivers.
Now Adam and Eve were told to look after the garden. Well, Alan has
enough trouble looking after the vicarage garden and it must be tiny
compared to the garden of Eden. So how did they do it, it seems
impossible for anyone to tend a garden of that size.
To tend that garden they would have had to be super-human with
skills and abilities way beyond modern man, beyond your imagination.
So what went wrong and why don’t people today have those powers
that Adam and Eve had? Well we are told that they separated
themselves from God and went their own way. Their powers waned
and they lost their ‘super human’ abilities.
So before the fall (separation from God) what were these abilities
like? A clue perhaps is given by the life of Jesus. We are told that He,
Jesus, is the second Adam born the complete man.
When we look at Jesus, the power to heal every illness, disease,
physical affliction, to turn water into wine, to control the sea and calm
storms. To walk on water, to multiply food to feed the hungry. With
Rosie’s Ramblings from
The Vicarage
those abilities perhaps Adam and Eve could have easily tended the
garden of Eden.
So is it possible that in Jesus we see the potential that all humans
once had? A future reality for all humans who put their faith in Him.
Maybe God allowed some animals like dogs to keep their hyper
senses just to remind humans what their senses would have been like
if they had stuck with Him.
Hey I am only a dog what would I know. But could I be right? What
do you think?
Rosie the philosopher.
Good news from
Angels
Our Angels playgroup
is thriving and we
often have 30+
children and babies on
a Thursday morning, +
parents and
carers. The little ones have a
great time playing while the parents have a brew and a chat and
then we go into the Erringden Room for story time, singing and
prayers, followed by a healthy snack for the children, then more
brews for the grown ups! With all these refreshments we are very
busy in the kitchen and we really need another kitchen assistant.
So, if you are interested in helping out in the kitchen on Thursday
mornings during term time, please have a chat with us.

A puzzle for the kids
If you have a
Children’s Society box
then it’s time to bring
them in to be emptied.
Please pass them to

CHOIR TRIP TO CARTMEL
We set off in the coach from mytholmroyd with choir members and their supporters.
The coach journey is a great opportunity to catch up with friends, and try and win the cash raffle organised by Geoffrey We arrived in cartmel at lunch time and despite the poor weather we had a brief visit at the priority before the most vital part of the day .lunch.
There are several tea rooms and a few pubs to choose from so we all had a good meal. Then the we all had a tour around the very picturesque village , and the weather started to improve.
The choir had a very successful practise . Then we all had time to enjoy the sunshine before the service. The Evening Song service was conducted by our Martin McDonald, with readings by Eric, and Tracy. Eric drew the short straw with the longest reading ever!
The choir sung beautifully, ably conducted by professor David Baker, and our organists David barker and Henry our young scholar .
It was an outstanding service much enjoyed by all who attended.
The coach trip home was broken up with evening meal in a local hotel in Kendall
Thank you Geoffrey Greenwood and Malcolm Rogers for organizing everything . Tracy
