“I am a believer in the perfectibility of human beings,” says Tom Hanks in the recently revealed trailer for The Circle. The audience members hang on his every word, but we know something isn’t quite right. “Without secrets… we can finally realise our potential.” Hanks plays the founder of a powerful tech company in a taut thriller that takes a peek into the not so distant future. Here technology collides with the desire to be heard and online presence is everything.

Caught in the middle is Emma Watson as new recruit Mae Holland, a young idealist who struggles to maintain her own identity as she becomes the face of a company with a billion followers. In this chilling future, no one is really safe when everyone is always watching. Based on the best-selling novel by Dave Eggers, The Circle releases in theatres this April.

hristmas couldn’t come early enough for the GC team as we kicked off an initiative to put a smile on an orphan’s face. in exchange

for an optional donation, patrons were given the opportunity to send a loved one a postcard anywhere in the world, thanks to the partner-ship of Libanpost. Then, on December 19th, a very special day began with a convoy of Vespa-riding santas accompanying the bus which transported the happy kids to ABC Dbayeh. After a delicious meal at Roadster Diner came a fantastic performance by the Hoops Dance Academy, a screening of Moana, and tons of gifts for all from GC and Hayda Baytak. We thank our generous patrons for supporting this worthy cause—all donations went towards ensuring winter supplies for the orphans.

From her break-out on the Disney Channel to a starring role in Vampire Academy three years later, the lovely and talented actress is taking Hollywood by storm.

“This whole high school thing’s just a blip,” says one victimised teen in the film’s trailer, and we sympathise. And then the haunting images that follow raise captivating questions. Why is Sam having to relive the same day and will it ever end? We can’t wait to find out.

Have you met Zoey Deutch?

“If I was going to relive the same day over and over, I’d want it to be a day that would make a difference. And not just for me.”

It’s a question we don’t consider often, but when we do, it leads to a profound reassessment of who we are. In Before I Fall, high school senior Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch) has it all: the crush-worthy boyfriend, amazing best friends and drop dead gorgeous looks. February 12 is just another charmed day in Sam’s life until she is stuck reliving it during one inexplicable week. When Sam untangles the mystery, she discovers the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

n 1988, at a special screening in New York for the city’s religious leaders of his latest film, Martin Scorsese made the acquaintance of Archbishop Paul Moore. At the event Moore,

who was nearing the end of his tenure as the Episcopal Bishop of New York, presented the director with a copy of Shusaku Endo’s historical novel Silence. The book had been published in Japan in 1966 where it was highly praised, the subject at the time of the most intense, thorough and rigorous analysis. When an English edition appeared some years later, the novel’s reputation as a profound examination of, and meditation upon, religious themes was further enhanced. The book had a profound effect on Scorsese and for the next 28 would be a passion project that he nursed with care.

The Academy Award winning director’s long anticipated film tells the story of two 17th century Portuguese missionaries who undertake a peril-ous journey to Japan to search for their missing mentor, Father Christavao Ferreira. There they minister to the Christian villagers they encounter who are forced to worship in secret. At that time in Japan, feudal lords and ruling Samurai were determined to eradicate Christianity in their midst; Christians were persecuted, tortured and forced to apostatise, that is, renounce their faith or face a prolonged and agonising death.

Starring Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider Man, Hacksaw Ridge), Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List) and a rich ensemble of Japan’s best-known actors, the film examines the spiritual and religious question of God’s silence in the face of human suffering.

Here, Scorsese sheds light on his latest masterpiece.

Shusaku Endo’s book made a huge impression on you. Can you talk about why you feel it spoke to you personally?MartIn scorsese: The subject matter presented by Endo in his book has been in my life since I was very, very young. I was raised in a strong Catholic family and was very much involved in religion. The bedrock I still have is the spirituality of Roman Catholicism I was immersed in as a child, spirituality that had to do with faith. At this time in my life I continually think about—wonder about—faith and doubt, weakness, and the human condition, and these are the very themes that Endo’s book touches upon in such a direct way.

Overall it took you, along with your writing collaborator Jay Cocks, more than fifteen years to complete what you both felt was a successful and workable script. And following the release of the hugely popular The Wolf of Wall Street,

the financing was in place. Your next step was casting; how quickly did that come about and how difficult was it to fill the role of Father Rodrigues, played by Andrew Garfield? The actor who would play Rodrigues had to have the ability and understanding to deal with the complex issues that inform the character. I understood also that we had to find someone who would want to play the part. Over the years I had seen many actors. Some said right off the bat they had no interest in the subject and that was that. Andrew is the right age, but more importantly he has the ability to handle the role. And he cares. Frankly, he’s a god-send.

Your ability to elicit great work from your actors is legend-ary. What did you look for in the cast you were assembling?First of all, I needed great actors. I know that sounds simple, but it’s true—the material is

The exact number of Christians killed in this period can’t be known, but it’s possible that it was in the thousands.

Where does Liam Neeson’s character fit into the story? In 1633, the Jesuits received the shattering news that Christovão Ferreira had apostatised, con-verted to Buddhism and was collaborating with the Japanese government. Shusaku Endo’s novel is based on these historical incidents, and Ferreira is the character played by Liam Neeson.

Soon after, Japan’s borders were essentially closed to the West. The two young Jesuit priests in Silence travel to Japan in secret knowing at any moment they could be tracked down, captured, tortured and executed.

Filming on Silence began January 31, 2015 in Taipei, Taiwan and wrapped on May 15, 2015, after approximately fifteen weeks. Was it a tough shoot? Many of the locations were tough—it was, really, one of the hardest shoots I’ve ever had—but that’s the nature of the story. So much of the action takes place in hovels, in squalid settings, in mud or on steep and rocky terrain.

The Christian converts around 17th-century Nagasaki lived extremely tough lives, without com-fort or elegance of any kind, and the missionaries were hidden away in hovels. In the second half of the picture, you’re seeing everything from Rodrigues’ point of view, much of the time through the bars of his prison cell, from the inside looking out. So, we needed studio resources, which we had in Taipei, plus settings by the sea and in the mountains.

What kind of journey do you hope the audience will take in Silence? This is a lot of history, a lot of historical forces interacting in an extremely complex manner. I thought about giving the audience a historical context with a card at the beginning or narration or expository dialogue, and then I decided to go another way. Why? Because I wanted the world of mid-17th century Japan to feel as mysterious to the audience as it did to Rodrigues and Garupe. And, on another level, because the conflicts that occur in the picture—the persecution of religious minorities, the testing of faith—are timeless. ß

extremely complex, the world in which the story unfolds is unknown to most of us here in the West, and I needed actors who could absorb it all and dive in and bring it to life. I needed adventurers, and I use that term in the physical and emotional senses.

With Liam and Ciarán, I needed people with a certain gravity, people who understood stillness and…silence. Every second that they were on screen had to count, and they needed to provide a contrast to Andrew and Adam, whose charac-ters are younger, thinner, more impulsive. I also needed the audience to see that contrast visually: the thin, angular faces of the two younger actors, who move quickly, in contrast to the older, more becalmed, physically grounded actors. That was the idea, and that’s what the four of them bring to the picture.

Silence also enjoys an impressive cast of Japanese actors, including the highly-respected actor/director Shinya Tsukamoto as Mokichi. What was it like when you found out he was coming in to audition?“What?” I said. “What are you taking about? The great director is coming in to audition?!” I was so surprised—I couldn’t believe it. Shinya is a true auteur whose films inspire me: Tetsuo, Iron Man and Snakes of June.

The Japanese actors are remarkable. Meeting them, working with them is a revelation. Their range, the depth of their talents is astonishing.

Having worked on the story and script for so many years, you were deeply versed in the period, and aimed for com-plete authenticity. How active was the missionary work in Japan at the time? The main events of Silence take place in 1640 and 1641—the early Edo period. The first missionaries arrived in Japan almost 100 years earlier—in the mid-16th century. For decades, the missionaries were generally welcomed and tolerated in Japan and by 1600, there were an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Japanese converts to Christianity—of all classes. With the establishment of the Tokugawa regime,

the shogunate began to consolidate power and unify Japan. The Portuguese and other European missionaries were perceived as challengers to the power of the shogunate and in 1587 the first in a series of orders banishing Christians was written.

During the next decade or so the missionary effort continued until in 1614 when an Edict of Expulsion forced Christian missionaries under-ground. And so began the period of persecution—where Christians were routed out of hiding and were either forced to apostatise—to renounce their faith—or suffer various forms of torture and death.

this work that actually nourishes me or to do I have to accept that this is just a job and I have to pay my bills?

Co-star John Legend wrote the song “start A Fire” for the movie. What was it like to watch him work? For John to bring in his contemporary take was a really hard thing to do. Sonically and energeti-

cally it could have really clashed with the kind of music the movie is celebrating. Instead, what John brought was so good that it just makes my character’s dilemma that much more complicated.

Enter Mia, who has her own dreams. Does this create a challenge for sebastian? I think it’s easier for him to get on board with

Mia’s dream than it is with his own. He just thinks Mia needs to create her own opportunities and stop waiting for people to give her permission to do what she loves to do.

What was it like reuniting with Emma stone? There’s no one else like Emma. She’s one-of-a-kind, and brings that same quality to Mia. You feel for Mia as someone who has been working in LA, trying to catch a break, because you can see just how special and unique she is. But you also see that Mia’s a bit different and not necessarily what these people in the entertainment world are looking for—where they often want people who are interchangeable with one another. She’s just not that. She’s also an amazing dancer and I was really leaning on her a lot of the time, literally.

some of the dance numbers are incredibly elaborate. Tell us about working with Mandy Moore on the routines.Everything had to work as perfectly as possible once the cameras were rolling, because any misstep would be basically unacceptable. So we practiced for three months beforehand so that we could deliver for Damien what he was looking for in one take.

The cast and crew were stunned by how quickly you learned to play the piano. How did you tackle the task? Piano is something I always wished I had the time to learn so here I had this great opportunity to sit in front of a piano for three months and just play—and I took advantage of it. It was really one of the most fulfilling preproduction periods I’ve ever had.

I practiced some of those piano pieces four hours a day for three months—so I should techni-cally never want to hear them again. But every time I hear them I’m still moved by them and I still think they are really, really beautiful. We’re so lucky to have this really special score. ß

irector of the Oscar-winning Whiplash, Damien Chazelle brings us one of the most talked about movies of the year. The awards-season darling La La Land reunites Ryan

Gosling and Emma Stone for the third time and the result is magic. This modern romance tells the story of Mia (Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams. Gosling takes us on a tour.

You’ve played a variety of genres. How did you feel about starring in a musical?rYan GoslInG: I was really intrigued by the fact that Damien wanted to make a film in the style of the Fred and Ginger and Gene Kelly eras, because those are the musicals that move me. The fact that he wanted this film to have that kind of aesthetic and spirit of playfulness was fantastic because it was also a secret wish of mine to make a film like that.

That your character is a jazz man seems right up your alley. Tell us about sebastian.Sebastian has dedicated his life to being a great jazz pianist, but in his mind the world around him is saying those days are over. His heroes were born 70 years ago, and in this day and age, a great piano player playing real jazz is destined to work in bars where people don’t even stop their conversations to listen to you. So how much do you compromise to be the artist you want to be? I think Sebastian is struggling with the difference between being a purist and being a snob. to think about why it is we tell stories, and I began to read up on works of mythology.

Ness wrote the screenplay for the movie. What did you both identify as the main challenges in the transition?Everything had to be integrated: Conor’s diverging relationships with his mother and his grandmother, and the fantastical element of the story. I realised that the 40-foot-high Monster would need to be depicted by integrating 2D and 3D animation.

One other thing that unlocked it for me was the idea that Conor loves to draw; it connected everything else. This was also a bond to me per-sonally, as I was obsessed with drawing when I was a boy. The book speaks about death in a direct and darker way. For the film, I wanted to transcend what we know is coming—the death of Conor’s mother—and be able to fuse the boy’s need to draw with the strength of legacy. There is light at the end of the story, resulting from the idea that art heals.

Was the Monster faithful to the novel or did you have to improvise? The Monster represents that part of your personality which you haven’t yet come to terms with. We did about 200 drawings... The more we had something that looked like fantasy, the less interesting it was for me. Ultimately, we returned to something close to Jim Kay’s iconic drawings in the book.

By combining CGI effects with animatronics, you were able to create a creature that seems very much alive. Tell us about that process. There is nothing that can’t be done now in visual effects, so I believe it engages audiences more when you go back to how things were done in the first generations of moviemaking. It means more and better interaction for the actors, too. The giant paw that grabs Conor out of his bedroom, the massive

foot he touches, the huge head outside his window —they are all real, including handcrafting work.

A Monster Calls is stunning to look at and Dp Óscar Faura played a big part in achieving the atmosphere. I think we work together so well because I’m the kind of director who is always looking for the accident, something unexpected that comes out of improvisation—and Óscar is just the opposite; he likes to have everything really locked down. So he keeps my feet closer to the ground while I encourage him to be more daring and to take more risks. I’m proud of what we have achieved on A

Monster Calls; visually, this is the most beautiful of the films we have made together.

You auditioned close to 1,000 boys for the role of Conor, who is in practically every scene. How did you come to cast the young and talented Lewis MacDougall in the part?Lewis did an extraordinary audition. There were a couple of very good candidates to play Conor, but we could see that Lewis was able to convey internal conflict. This was important because Conor struggles with a conflict that he is not able to externalise. Lewis was the perfect actor to play Conor. He has a wonderful vulnerability and at the same time a great strength that goes beyond his years, and a lot of that is echoed in the character. He can be compared to an adult actor because he has an amazing ability to prepare himself for a scene.

In the hospital scene with Felicity [Jones], he did a couple of takes where he was caught between wanting to be strong for his mother and feeling grief for himself. Watching him act out that scene was absolutely breathtaking. He is in this incredible struggle, and you can see all the emotion across his face.

The last scene is a standout, and we hear you didn’t give Lewis the script page so that he would be able to convey the most natural, authentic response as events unfolded. And that’s just what Lewis gifted us with. ß

welve-year-old Conor O’Malley (Lewis MacDougall) is about to escape into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales. He is dealing with his mother’s (Felicity Jones)

illness, which has necessitated Conor’s spending time with his less-than-sympathetic grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). His daily existence at his UK school is one of academic disinterest and bullying by classmates. As Conor’s father (Toby Kebbell) has resettled thousands of miles away in the US, the boy yearns for guidance.

He unexpectedly summons a most unlikely ally, who bursts forth with terrifying grandeur from an ancient towering yew tree and the powerful earth below it: a 40-foot-high colossus of a creature (portrayed in performance-capture and voiceover by Liam Neeson) who appears at Conor’s bedroom window at 12:07 one night—and at that time on nights thereafter. The Monster has stories to tell, and he insists that Conor hear them and power-fully visualise them. Conor’s fear gives way to feistiness and then to looking within; for, The Monster demands that once the tales are told it will be time for Conor to tell his own story in return. Ancient, wild and relentless, the Monster guides Conor on a journey of courage, faith and truth.

A visually spectacular and stunningly emotional drama based on the award-winning novel by Patrick Ness, A Monster Calls is helmed by JA Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage). The director takes us into his fantastical world.

The novel by patrick Ness has won many prestigious prizes worldwide. What was it that attracted you to the story?ja baYona: I recognised at once themes I’d touched on in The Orphanage and The Impossible: characters finding themselves in a very intense situation, with death on the horizon. I saw this as a powerful and important story to tell as a movie—an adventure that anyone can relate to. I was also inspired

That’s a good question. I think I only respond intui-tively to the work, and people like Emma interest me. I was really drawn to her, but curious about her at the same time. And when there is curiosity, I find you work harder to really be forensic in your examination of who this character is. She is quite impulsive, which would probably be the aspect of her that I relate to the most. But Emma is an Irish immigrant from the wrong side of the tracks who is living in a world and an era in which women

weren’t protected, although she does have a kind of glamorous ‘out’ with the gangster Albert White.

What do you think Emma ultimately comes to represent to Joe within the tapestry of his life?Joe falls for Emma hook, line and sinker, and that experience has a powerful effect on every-thing that comes after. I suppose falling in love with the wrong person is something compulsive, dangerous and even obsessive. You know in your

rational mind that it is not right; but then there is something incredibly intoxicating about that kind of all-consuming desire, and I think humans are interested in that because so many people have fallen under its spell.

What was it like shooting that intense dinner scene with Ben and Brendan Gleeson as Joe’s father, Tom Coughlin? Brendan is practically royalty where I come from, so it was quite intimidating. It was against my

instincts to be that cold and unapologetic, which, at the same time, is something I really like about this woman. Joe’s father is being so rude to her in a time and place in which women were almost second class citizens—and he’s a police officer! But she holds her own. I respect that defiance in Emma, however warranted or unwarranted it is.

Were you familiar with the Dennis Lehane novel on which Ben based his screenplay adaptation?I had heard of Dennis Lehane, but I hadn’t read this book, although I did as soon as I finished the script. It was very useful because although Emma is loosely described in the book, at a certain point you have to kind of let go and be faithful to the script.

What other kinds of research did you do to prepare?Apart from investigating the era, I spoke to many people, including Irish immigrants in Boston, and worked intensively on the dialect. I worked with a very brilliant dialect coach, Gerry Grennell, whom I met while shooting Casanova with Heath Ledger about 10 years ago. I wanted Emma’s voice to be as specific as it is. I think this is the most fun accent I have ever done, and I stayed in it all the time! And Ben did the accent too, which was funny. It was liberating in a way; although, at times, I think I was a bit rude to people because there was something about being in that character that allowed me to say anything I wanted without apology [laughs].

What do you hope audiences will take away?I hope the audience loves this film. You want people to be moved and feel that for two hours of their lives they have disappeared into this world. I just love the escapism of cinema. ß

ased on the award-winning best-seller by Dennis Lehane, Live by Night marks the second collaboration between the author and fellow Boston native Ben Affleck, following

the acclaimed drama Gone Baby Gone. The film is set in the roaring `20s when Prohibition hasn’t stopped the

flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his girl (Sienna Miller). The fiery affair ends in tragedy, setting Joe on a path of revenge, ambition, romance and betrayal that propels him out of Boston and up the ladder of Tampa’s steamy rum-running underworld.

We join Miller on a journey into the roaring 20s.

What was it about the project that made you want to be a part of it?sIenna MIller: When I read the script, I loved the writing; I found it to be so floral and poetic. I remember reading the dialogue and thinking, ‘Please, can I say these words?’ [Laughs.] I also love my character. Emma is damaged, and I like to have the opportunity to play a character who goes through so many changes.

I was also really looking forward to working with Ben Affleck. I loved Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo. I think Ben makes movies that are entertaining and have soul at the same time, and as a director he made me feel that he believed in me and had my back. I don’t think I have ever been on a happier set.

When you were finding your way into Emma Gould, what aspects of the character came to you intuitively and what did you need to dig a little deeper to find?

tarring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a modern-day prospector, hustler and dreamer, Gold is the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream:

to discover gold. Desperate for a lucky break, Wells teams up with a similarly eager yet luckless geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. Getting the gold was hard, but keeping it would be even harder, sparking an adventure through the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street.

“That is my favourite character that I’ve ever been able to inhabit,” says McConaughey, whose astounding performance in Dallas Buyers Club in 2013 earned him his very own gold. “Kenny Wells—hands down my favourite. [One of] three scripts I’ve ever read in my life, in 26 years of doing this, that the first time I read it I saw it from the inside out. It was like I knew who this guy is. And my mind started going to who I thought my dad was when I was 15… He loved the deal. It was about the deal. He loved a shady deal better than a straight deal.”

Flying high after an ensemble cast win at the Hollywood Film Awards, director Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic) had only praise for the calibre of talent on board. “It was an adventure,” he says. “We had floods, we had avalanches. We went way up into a jungle. It was a movie adventure about an adventure. Any time you get to work with McConaughey, Edgar Ramirez, Bryce Dallas Howard, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, Stacey Keach, Bruce Greenwood… That’s why we got that ensemble award—it’s an incredible ensemble.” ß

n account of the Boston Marathon bombing, Patriots Day is the powerful story of a community’s courage in the face of terror.

In the aftermath of an unspeakable act of terror, Police Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) joins courageous survivors, first responders and investigators in a race against the clock to hunt down the bombers before they strike again. Weaving together the stories of Special Agent Richard Deslauriers (Kevin Bacon), Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (JK Simmons) and nurse Carol Saunders (Michelle Monaghan), this visceral and unflinching chronicle captures the suspense of one of the most sophisticated manhunts in law enforcement history and the strength of the people of Boston.

NOMINATED FOR two Golden Globe awards, three SAG awards and ranking among the AFI’s movies of the year, Denzel Washington’s third feature directorial outing is an adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play. In a moving portrayal, an African-American father struggles with race relations in the United States while trying to raise his family in the 1950s and coming to terms with his past.

SET AGAINST the antebellum South, The Birth of a Nation follows Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atroci-ties—against himself and his fellow slaves—Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.

A BIOGRAPHICAL drama tells the true story of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers’ speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. He maneuvered himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire.

A ROUSING movie with an important message, Hidden Figures is nominated for two Golden Globe awards and two SAG awards. It is the incred-ible untold story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanised the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
