Task 6: The Genre I will Feature

I shall be doing an Indie/Rock magazine:-

• This is because I am very familiar with this genre as this is the type of music I listen too so I am familiar with the artists, songs, what would appear in this genre’s magazine.

• I read magazines such as Q and NME so I understand what needs to be included in the magazine, such as the type of language that is used and what main article ideas that are involved in this genre.

Task 6: Brief History of the Genre Indie/Rock

• Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s. Indie rock is extremely diverse, with sub-genres that include lo-fi, post-rock, math rock, indie pop, dream pop, noise rock, space rock, Dream Popcore, riot grrrl and emo, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground and less testosterone driven perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.

Task 7: Similar Magazine other than IPC publishing

Q Magazine• Publisher is Bauer Media.• I don’t think that this publisher will be

good for my magazine as there already is a magazine very similar to my own called Q.

• The target audience of this magazine is people who like Indie/Rock music but also don’ mind it straying into Pop music now and again. The target age of this magazine would be around 30 because it is an expensive magazine at £3.99 and the language used aimed at a higher status person looking into the ABC1 category.

• Bauer Media also publishes Mojo, Kerrang! and Pop magazine.
