Task A05- Magazine distribution and ownership

Report on distribution and ownership of Vogue magazine.

Where is Vogue and other lifestyle/ hobby magazines distributed?

• Newsagents local and National such as WH smiths, John Menzies etc & newsagents in train/ bus stations and airports.

• Supermarkets, all major UK supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda etc.

• Department stores such as M&S, John Lewis, Selfridges etc.

• Chain stores such as Top shop, HMV, Virgin.• Subscription Is available via the magazine itself,

promotion in magazines from the same magazine house via leaflets, & via the Website.

• Website Has been voted the best magazine website of the year.

Conde Nast publications is the parent company of Vogue magazine which also owns

the titles below.

Conde Nast publications hierachy chart

• Most of Conde Nast publications magazine titles would be aimed at the higher end of the market. Titles such as Vogue, Conde Nast traveller & GQ are known as ‘Glossies’ and would be aimed at a target audience with a higher level of income and education, in comparison to magazines such as Heat, Now, Nuts etc which are aimed at more of a mass market.

I’m now going to produce a hierachy chart of Conde Nast publications to find out about where Vogue stands

in terms of distribution and profitability

• I found the following website, which lists the monthly sales of a number of Conde Nast magazines such as Vogue in comparison with glossies from rival magazine houses.

• I also can research the ABC website which lists the sales of many other magazine titles from hobby and lifestyle categories.

• Other sites I can research are the IPC and Emap site.

IPC

• I will cut and paste all the magazine titles from conde nast from the website and put them in order with the magazine that has the highest sales per month at the top, and the least sales at the bottom to produce a hierachy chart, this will help me to find out where vogue stands in the hierachy in terms of sales compared to Condenast’s other magazines.

How is Vogue funded?

For the majority of magazines, the bulk of the funding comes from the following…

AdvertisingCover price & subscriptionsProfits from the parent companies and other

business interests.
