The Scottish Episcopal Church is a self-governing province of the world-wide Anglican Communion. This is a family of over 70 million Christians in more than 160 countries. Our nearest relations are the Church of England, the Church in Wales and the Church of Ireland. Through the Porvoo agreement we are also in full communion with many other branches of the Church.

St Columba’s in Largs, is one of over 60 Episcopal congregations that work and worship within the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway. We are part of Ayrshire Region and our neighbours include congregations in Ardrossan, Dalry, Irvine, Troon, Kilmarnock, Prestwick, Ayr and Maybole.

The area covered by St Columba’s includes Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie and West Kilbride and ecumenically we play a very active part in Largs Churches Together.

Bishop Gregor's Christmas Message "As I write, the clocks have gone back and things are getting darker. People now talk of light deprivation as a medical condition and it does seem that some of us are susceptible to all of that. But, at this time of the year, there’s a lot of extra light around. Crowds of people out shopping and enjoying themselves among the brightly lit streets. Christmas lights and Christmas attractions. And, here in Glasgow, down at the St Enoch Centre, the wooden booths of the Christmas market, gluwein, bratwurst and those wonderful German Christmas robins, like the one I bought a couple of years ago, on sale once more. Wet, grey, dark there of course too, but surrounded by light, colour, life, fun. It’s easy enough, it’s fatally easy enough, for Christian people like us, to dismiss all of this as so much tinselly trivia, utterly unrelated to what we like to call the “true meaning of Christmas”. Well, if you have thoughts like that, let me try to persuade you this Christmastide to give them up, once and for all. People like us who will gather at the Christmas eucharist to welcome the true light who lightens everyone coming into the world, have no business being sniffy about people’s desire at a dark time of the year to enjoy light and warmth and being together in that light and warmth. We should have the imagination to sense that, however vaguely, this is a very natural, very human, and so ultimately God-given reaching out for something better that lies beyond the often dark and grim realities of the world we live in – and, God knows, they are dark enough. So, for us, far from being nowhere near the true meaning of Christmas, the Christmas lights in streets, on countless trees, the reindeers and snowmen plastered all over

houses or wherever, should point us towards another light. And here’s the difference - sometime in January all the Christmas and seasonal lights and all the Christmas and seasonal attractions will disappear, put away for another year. Like many people I hate taking all my own lights and cards and tree down – the house looks so bare – but I ought to remember that the light we have been celebrating in the twelve days of Christmas shines all the year round and can never be taken away or extinguished. One of the simplest and yet most powerful testimonies I ever heard to this great hope of ours was offered by one of my curates when I was Rector of St Ninian’s in Pollokshields on the south side of Glasgow. He was taking some children round that wonderful church and they noticed the white light burning above the altar of the side chapel, where the sacrament of consecrated bread and wine was kept. Why was that light burning away there? Well, he said, it is there to remind us that Jesus the light of the world is always with us so that, even if we came into this big church in the dark we needn’t be afraid because Jesus is here, Jesus is with us, the light still burns. So, this coming Christmastide let’s allow ourselves to be pointed once again towards that single, world-changing, all-important truth, the Light of the World. He came into the world all those years ago looking for us and He comes into our midst this Christmas on the same quest, to embrace us with joy and wonder so that we may do the very same to Him. +Gregor

Regional Council Report!Meeting held at Holy Trinity Church, Kilmarnock, Tuesday 15 November 2016!!The meeting took what is the usual current format - a presentation. The guest speaker was Bishop Gregor Duncan, the topic was matrimony, a subject he himself said was a very emotive for some. The presentation was most informative, thoughtful and educational from a liturgical perspective. !!Bishop Gregor looked at the marriage liturgy and its evolution over the years and how it has mirrored changes in society. No longer must a woman agree to ‘obey’ her husband for example. Marriage no longer stipulates one of its key roles as being for the procreation of children; changes that, for some at the time, felt like an erosion of standards and 'what is decent'. !The role of the Bible and its teachings on divorce in both the Old and New Testaments were highlighted by some members attending. The Bishop again discussed the process that allowed the Church during the 1980's to tackle the conflict between society demands and Scriptural teachings. He pointed out that marriage is a union; a partnership two people giving their lives to each other under God, and again with discussion and prayer the Church now allows, with the discretion of the Bishop, individuals who have been divorced to be married in church. Marriage, as an institution, has not been eroded by these changes. The matter of same sex relationships and the availability of civil same sex marriage is a matter currently being discussed by the Church. !!Bishop Gregor spoke of his own personal struggle with this process. The use of prayer and reading has given him a broader perspective. It is a matter in which he can appreciate both sides of the argument. For him, personally, he has reservations, but he can see that, if not in the near future, at some time same sex marriage in Church will be likely. It is a contentious issue and it may divide individuals but the Bishop's talk if anything has shown the evolution of the understanding of marriage through the years, changes have come about that have not diminished the sanctity of two people making vows to one another in the sight of their congregations. It is still an important mainstay of society and an outward demonstration of fidelity. What is perhaps interesting would be to ask the question 'What issue will, in 50 years time, be discussed and being credited with the demise of marriage?’!!William Clark-Ferguson!Congregational Regional Council Representative!!!!

Continuity and Change !2017 sees the 140th anniversary of the consecration of St Columba’s Scottish Episcopal Church here in Aubrey Crescent, Largs. As part of the celebration of this special year a new and exciting booklet has been produced. It is called ‘Continuity and Change’ and is an up-to-date companion to the centenary booklet of 1976. I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed articles toward this publication and especially wish to thank Heather Upfield for all her hard work in pulling it all together into what I think is a remarkable piece of work. !This publication is hot off the press and available for sale this Advent - a bargain at only £5 a copy. I know all members and friends would enjoy reading the booklet and am sure it would make the ideal stocking-filler this festive season!
