Many people are in the belief that the i-D logo is on its side, however the truth is that the logo is supposed to resemble a winking face, similar to that the model

The barcode isn’t on this cover as it is a digital cop, the barcode would appear here if it was the paper copy.

Minimalistic layout and design, complimented by thoughtful and aesthetically pleasing colour palette.

Cover is all about the photography and logo winking at the viewer

Complimentary colour palette used to create a cohesive fluid structure to the page that is visually pleasing. Muted soft look to the photograph contrasts with the bright vibrant colours used in the i-D logo.

The model that features on the cover page is Mica Arganàraz who is a part of the “The Hot List" that contains 6 of the most famous new models. She is attractive as most i-D magazine models are.

When carrying out research into i-D magazines, one the first thing that I noticed is that all the model has been shot with one eye closed. It is usually the models right eye that is shut. This links back the hidden meaning behind the title. The majority of i-D cover page models are women that are attractive.

Slightly lower camera angle. We are looking up to her, she appears in control, powerful and dominant on the cover. She covers the spread there is little empty space.

Page heading links to magazine title keeping a cohesive style throughout the magazine that constantly links back to the name/brand, reinforcing it in peoples mind.

Double page spread:

Water mark like logo behind the text. Adds texture to what would otherwise be a boring white background.

Paper has a grainy recycled style to it. The recycled paper look makes it feel aged but has a nice tactile feel to it. The grain adds a vintage quality to the pages that contrast the modern design of the magazine.

i-D logo fades ad both ends giving a sort of faked depth to it. It helps to blend it into the background making the text easier for people to read. If it was fully bold across the page the text would be hard to read.

Centred format adds interest as it’s not a common layout choice,it puts the emphasis on the text as there is only one picture to compliment the text.

Some of the text has an embodiment effect which differentiates that text and adds interest

There is a miniature version of the cover page photo located at the bottom third of ye connects page. This isn’t often seen within magazines and I find it very interesting

One page is a photo the other is just text, clear division between media types. You focus on one at a time instead of having to flick between the two as you read which could disturb the story.

Clash – Popular music, fashion and film magazine

Cover page

The large extreme bold master header is captivating and fills the upper third of the magazine. The bright white front is very intense and will attract customers well.

Slim modern font that blends nicely with the white background. It emphasises a sleek clean style that suits i-D’s contemporary modern style. The title isn’t in your face and fits into the page without taking over the page.

Border around picture makes it easier on your eyes. Your eyes can rest upon the white border which frames the image. It seems cleaner and easy to view.

The minimalistic and mono tonal design makes the cover look sophisticated and even more professional. The neutral colours don’t keep the audience varied as neither gender has been specified. Therefore both male and female readers will be interested in this cover/ magazine

Clash is a multi-award winning music magazine that covers all genres of music. The model choice of Matthew Healy suggest that this music would be more so directed to indie rock as Matthew Healy is the lead singer for the successful, alternative rock band - ‘The 1975.

The entire cover is stylish and has a neat, uncluttered look which is appealing

I feel that the fonts styles have been carefully selected, furthering how well made this magazine cover page is. The font is thin which is very different to the master header.

Cover has a very formal black and white feel. It looks smart and modern but the the model look away in thoughtful, daydreamy contrasts the formal modern style of the layout.

The colour pallet used allows a very similar style from the magazine cover, using the same colour pallet shows a good structure that has been maintained throughout the magazine, this is a key feature that symbolises a successful magazine

The magazine release date has been positioned at the very top of the magazine, even above the title itself. Commonly all the most important information appears in the first half of the magazine

The body text is in a thin font which looks modern sleek and stylish. It contrasts with the bold header font and sub heading font. The sub heading font looks like its styled from the 60’s/70’s which leans more towards the 1975’s style and not the magazines style.

Double page spread:

I really like the unusual font that has been featured in the contents header. It emphasizes the alternative genre featured in this magazine.

The lines that break apart the text are a feature of this contents page that I would certainly like to incorporate in my own magazine. The separating lines structure and organise the text in such a way that it looks very professional and easy to read. Without these lines I feel that this page would look cluttered and unorganised.

I find it unusual how the contents page doesn’t have an image to go with it. However I think adding an image may make it look untidy as the black background would most likely create a poor colour contrast.

‘CLASH’ magazine are one of the only magazines that have placed their page numbers in the centre of the magazine. The page numbers or magazine edition is commonly seen at the bottom of the page. I think it’s interesting how CLASH has gone against the regular habits of magazine by changing the location of the page number has. This would be a feature that I would be interested in implementing in my blog, however it is a feature that would only work if there isn’t already and image in the way.

The subheadings are clear and well presented making the contents page effective.

As the model has changed the direction that he is facing (compared to the cover page). I feel that the creators of this magazine have deliberately done this as the model is now looking in the direction of the next page, influencing the reader to carry on reading.

I believe that this blank space is a result of the full page picture on the next page. I think that ‘CLASH’ has left the space blank to avoid the reader feeling overwhelmed with all the information and the images that are already present.

As on the cover page, the model again fills the entire page, leaving little room for additional words. This could be due to the large amount of text on the previous page.

We are given a more zoomed out shot in comparison to the cover. Here a greater amount of the models outfit is shown.

As this Master header is quite long in comparison to other magazines, the positioning of the title is very clever and is a feature that I will most likely incorporate into my own magazine as my magazine title is relatively lengthy

The black and white colour palette is again used. After I did some research into indie music magazines and I have discovered that black and white are reoccurring colours that are used. The monotone colour palette provides a simple yet effective result when developing the magazine. The use of the black and white only colour palette makes the magazine striking; this feature seems to be what indie readers prefer.

The enlarged ‘W’ is a form of drop cap which is used to give a strong visual emphasis so that the reader starts the reading from where the drop cap is

I feel that this contents page really suits the alternative theme as both the word spacing and the picture placing is really unique and somewhat random. The page almost looks messy in the way that it isn’t structured and how there isn’t any consistency; I personally believe that this page is difficult to

The subtitles used are a helpful element of a contents page. The position of the subtitle is anther another actor that has been done differently. Usually the subtitles are located going down the page instead of across as this magazine has done.

As the model is looking directly into the camera, the focus of the viewer is held her

The colour is almost duotone that compliments a minimalistic layout of the front cover. Main focus is on the photograph and the small text is on the periphery to emphasize the image

The cover line “The rise of Elizabeth Olsen“indicate that this magazine feature up to date information. Elizabeth Olsen is the model that has been used of this front cover. She is an actress but has dabbled in the music industry. ”The rise” could point out that other upcoming artists would be an aspect of this magazine.

I have noticed that the background is purple and somewhat feminine and that the model is dressing in dark clothing that could be sold as unisex clothing. This contrast is unusual and I feel that the magazine audience is primarily for females but has some male readers.

This magazine doesn’t have a barcode indicating that this magazine is free, otherwise ‘Dazed and Confused’ magazine are breaking the law

A sneak peak of the magazine content is featured on the front page, enticing possible readers to purchase the magazine. The sneak peak contains names of a variety of fashion and alternative music artists.

Double page spread:I find it really unusual how the text overlaps the photo. This feature is really uncommon and I have only seen it done in ‘Dazed and Confused’ magazine. The individuality makes me want include it in my magazine. This feature also allows for more room to write added information which could be provide useful.

As there is so much text on the other page I think it is suitable to have a photo that fills the entire page. The image chosen is shot in the same interior scene as the cover photo

The pictures that have been used in this contents page are especially helpful as they offer a visual alternative to find the correct page. The photos are miniature versions o he actual magazine pages. I think that this feature is clever and will help the reader direct themselves throughout the magazine

The white background gives the ability to place any image (excluding white images) and still retain a good contrast of colour. The white background is also a safe and easy way to avoid a magazine style that is too dark and becomes unappealing because of it

I believe that the large space at the bottom looks odd and could have been filled with a simple image/ pattern that isn’t detailed. A small pattern would fill the space without making the contents page look even messier. The multi-tonal colour palette is the exactly

the same as the front cover. The same house style is professional and gives a clear indication that the development of this magazine has been well thought out.

As there is so much text on the other page I think it is suitable to have a photo that fills the entire page. The image chosen is shot in the same interior scene as the cover photo

Small, delicate font at the very bottom of the page gives credit for the designers of the entire outfit, e.g. Valentino, Miu Miu and Chanel.

There is a shift in the colour palate between the two photos. I think it has been used very effectively in this magazine. The two pictures give a smooth finish that isn’t unsettling in any way. I will certain bare this design in mind when creating my music magazine.
