Dear Viewers,
AETN works to be relevant to you. I spent much of January talking with public television colleagues and federal agencies about what ‘being relevant’ means…especially in this age of tweeting, blogging and Facebooking. We all continue to strive to connect and engage with our viewers, and are taking steps to
be a more relevant and useful resource to you – our viewers.
An overall theme I keep hearing is that audiences have countless choices and delivery methods beyond broadcast, and your local network should be available in varied formats.
How does this theme apply to AETN?
We firmly believe in serving the people of Arkansas with worthwhile projects and programming. Take, for example, “Protecting the Health and Finances of Arkansas Seniors,” where we helped answer the tough questions about retirement and healthcare in hard economic times. This month we’re hosting AETN Family Day at the Jones Center for Families in Springdale – a fun-filled, educational opportunity for children and families who might not otherwise have spring break activities.
Have you visited www.AETN.org lately? How about AETN’s fan page on Facebook? Or do you follow us on Twitter? We’re working daily to engage our audience through these social media platforms – we want to hear about your favorite programs, what you don’t like, what you’d like to see more of and how we can better serve you. We also want you to be aware of how you can be more involved with your statewide public service media network. And, we want you to have an online community who shares your thoughts and beliefs so you can create a dialogue about issues that matter to you.
That brings us to an important issue – being in touch with AETN when and where you want to be. Turn to page 31 of this issue to learn about our latest way to keep you in the loop – the all new AETN iPhone app. Download it to your iPhone to stay connected no matter where you are. You’ll have the latest schedule, videos and news at your fingertips. If you’re not an iPhone user, stay tuned. We’re working to launch a full mobile site later this year.
Thank you for continuing to support and be a part of AETN. As you know, March is one of our major membership campaigns. Enjoy the special programming, and know that each donation you make helps keep us on air, online and in your community.

As an educator, Hoggard is an advocate for AETN’s IDEAS Web site, which provides online professional development for educators.
“I use the online resources AETN provides for the classroom almost every day, and the resources the IDEAS Web site provides are a huge supplement to any curriculum,” Hoggard said.
During her time as an AETN Commissioner, Hoggard has had opportunities to understand firsthand the impact AETN has had on Arkansans and herself.
“I was invited to sit in on a taping in Jonesboro for a part of ‘In Their Words’” Hoggard said. “I felt privileged and proud to have been there that day and hearing from these veterans as they told their stories of World War II. This experience reminded me of stories I had heard my dad tell, which brought back memories that I had long forgotten and needed to remember.”
Incidentally, it’s programs such as “Historic Bridges of Arkansas,” “Exploring Arkansas,” “The Buffalo Flows” and “In Their Words” that Hoggard enjoys the most, she but finds it hard to name AETN’s most important service.
“Everything AETN has to offer the public is important in the way of news, education, politics, entertainment and preservation of the wonders of our state and people,” Hoggard said.
Hoggard holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education and is recognized nationally as a National Board Certified Teacher. During the course of her career she has taught all grade levels and curriculum in elementary school and has participated in educational programs which have included study trips to China, Japan and Mexico. She also serves as a Praxis III teacher performance assessor for the Department of Education, a system for assessing the skills of beginning teachers in their own classroom. Since August 2008, Hoggard has worked part time as an academic coach for Arkansas State University and Higher Ed Holdings, Inc. mentoring students through a graduate degree program online.
The Jonesboro native has cemented her personal philosophy of serving the community and leading by example by coordinating fundraisers for both St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Heifer International, serving as Justice of the Peace of the Craighead County Quorum Court and running twice for state representative of District 75. Hoggard currently serves as chair of the Republican Party of Craighead County. When Hoggard has time to herself she enjoys traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, reading, playing piano and listening to her son’s band, The Hoggard Brother’s Band.Hoggard, who was appointed to the Commission in 2005, will end her term in March, but she will continue to be a patron of AETN as a private citizen.
“I think AETN has the best staff of professionals I have seen in any one organization,” Hoggard said. “The leadership team at AETN is what makes it so successful and a great place to work and I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve as an AETN Commissioner.”AETN thanks Hoggard for five years of Commission service.
AETN Commission Board member Billie Sue Hoggard began her 30th year of teaching this year at the Health, Wellness & Environmental Studies Magnet School in Jonesboro.
