THE MAGAZINE THAT INFLUENCED MY DESIGNI used this design as a major influence when creating my magazine advert because I really liked how simple yet effective it looks. I really like how the text stands out on the advert for both mine and Jessie J’s advert because this makes the product look appealing due to how easy it is to read. I used the album that I created on my magazine advert because this is what I am advertising, so shows the audience what it is that they would be buying and what they would need to look out for if they decided to buy it.

WHY I FOLLOWED THESE PARTICULAR CONVENTIONS

To ensure that my product looked like a realistic one and reflected a professional artist and institution, I followed these conventions and used the magazine advert by Jessie J. To make sure that the artist is remembered by whoever sees the advert, I used the album on it that I had created; this included artist appearance, the artist’s name and the name of the album. This is a great promotional technique because it makes the artist’s face more memorable and also lets whoever has seen the advert know what they will have to look for if they want to buy the album. Although I included the album as part of the advertisement, I added the phrase ‘Debut Album’ just to establish what the magazine advert is for so that there is no confusion about it. I added the website too so that the consumer could find out more about the artist if they want to and find out if they are going on tour or doing any events. This is a great thing to add because this enables the artist to sell herself even more as she can add merchandise and tour dates to it to gain even more profit as an institution and individual. As the institution is a company that represents the artist, adding the record label is used as a way to thank the label for helping her get into the music industry. Following these conventions ensures the magazine advert looks like a professional product and reflects a design of magazine adverts that already exist.

ACHIEVEMENT

WHY I MADE SOME DIFFERENCES

To make my product a little different to Jessie J’s and other existing products, I altered the advert so that mine didn’t look like a replica of hers and to ensure mine demonstrated the type of artist I have created. Because Jessie J is an artist who is already really well-known and is very popular within the music industry, she was able to add an achievement of hers onto the magazine advert: ‘Includes the #1 international smash “Price Tag” feat. B.oB.’. As the artist I have created is brand new to the industry and therefore doesn’t have any achievements or awards that she can write about, I couldn’t add this even if it was something that I wanted to add but don’t think this matters too much because the advert is still effective as a form of promotion. Instead of adding this onto the advert, I added a review from a well-known and trusted source (The Times) which adds to the advert. This is because I think people will be more likely to buy an album when there is a review that they can trust. I also added the release date because this lets people know when they can buy it and also may cause them to be excited about the album, perhaps causing a frenzy on social media and within the media like newspapers and magazines. I added the social media icons because this is relevant to the audience I am aiming the product at due to it being a young one and will allow the artist to be followed by lots of people, creating a following for the artist. I added where the album can be bought, too, so that consumers can find the album easily and can go straight to download the album. Adding places that are online is also more relevant to the artist’s audience because of how I expect them to be quite young, so ensures that the sales are maximised.

DOES MY PRODUCT REFLECT THE INDIE-POP GENRE?I used the tour posters from Lykke Li and London Grammar a little, too, when deciding on the design of my magazine advert – although I mainly used the advert by Jessie J. I think that my magazine advert therefore looks professional and like a real product because of how I have followed similar conventions to these. Similarly to these tour posters, I used plain and simple to read fonts on my advert so that it looked appealing and wasn’t confusing to read. Differently to these but similarly to Lana Del Rey’s tour poster, I used some colour on my product to attract a younger audience which I think works well as the colour I have used is on my album so links with what I am advertising on my magazine advert. On all of these designs – including the magazine advert by Marina and the Diamonds – the artist appears on it; this is something I followed because it shows the audience what the artist looks like and therefore makes her more memorable.

IN CONCLUSION

I think that my product looks a lot like existing products and therefore reflects a professional artist and institution because it looks like it has been made as a real product that would appear in a magazine. Due to me using Jessie J’s magazine advert as inspiration when creating my product, I think I have followed the relevant conventions to ensure my product looks good and has the right effect to it. I also think that my advert looks good because it has a lot of information at the bottom of the advert but isn’t overcrowded. This makes it looks professional and therefore would boost sales of the album because of how it looks realistic. I also think that the advert looks really effective due to the use of the same font in the text at the bottom of the product as what is used on the digipak for the album I have created, and how it stands out because of the black text on the plain white background. I have made some examples of what the product would look like if it appeared in magazines and have included edits of the advert on a bus, escalator, London Underground and a billboard because I would like to place the advert there too to ensure the artist has maximum publicity and advertising to receive the highest profit as possible so that the artist can continue to make the music she likes and wants to give the world/her fans. I think that placing the advert in these places would be a really good idea because it would ensure that would reach lots of potential consumers as placing it only in a magazine reduces the amount of consumers that would see it.
