n Friday,April 30th, over 1,500 peoplefrom around the country gathered in ParkRa’anana for the 4th annual CommunityWalk for Habayit Shel Benji.

Participants in the walk ranged from 2 months old to80 years old! Over 180,000niswere raised, and all proceeds willgo to help the HaBayit Shel Benjicampaign.

Ruth Rurka, Benji’s aunt, tellsEssential Ra’anana,“The walk isn’tjust about raising funds, it is also toraise awareness about HaBayitShel Benji and the reasons whywe are putting up the house inBenji’s name.”

The concept of HaBayit Shel Benji is based on thelegacy of Major Benji Hillman (z’tl), a resident of Ra’ananawho was killed in action in the second LebanonWar in 2006.Benji always made an effort to take care of his fellow soldiers, and so to commemorate Benji’s memory, the house willserve as a home for lone soldiers.

The groundbreaking of the house, located on RechovHaPrachim, took place in November on grounds donated by

the Ra’anana municipality.HaBayit Shel Benji will have a guidance

center for all lone soldiers, not only those livingin the house. The plan is to accommodate up to50 soldiers (2 soldiers per room), arrange for

surrogate families fromRa’anana, offer meals, laundry services, computer and callcenter and a range ofeducational and leisureactivities.

There are stillmany things neededbefore launching HaBayitShel Benji. The volunteer

committee has a list prepared that details what isstill needed. If you are interested in donatingspecific items, please email Ruth Rurka [email protected] for more details.

Essential Ra’anana congratulates the walkers, sponsors and all those who participated to helpmake the CommunityWalk such a success!

ften I’m asked what the bestwine is for different occasions.Woefully overlooked in Israelis drinking rose wines during

our long and often steamy summers.Almost every Mediterranean wine regionproduces its fare share of Rose forquaffing. Whether it’s a rosado fromSpain or a rosato from Italy or a Vin Grisfrom France, it’s a common delight fordiners and imbibers to sit in Barcelona,Milan, Marsellies and even now in Tel Avivwith a chilled bottle of rosé adorningtheir table and stimulating their tastebuds.

Wine-snobs across the globe routinelyhave dismissed rosés as pale populistpretenders, and the whole category had beenbesmirched by light and mostly mundanemass-market rosés like mostWhite Zinfandelsfrom the United States. Prestigious wineriestypically stayed clear of making rosés as longas rosés carried an ironically sourreputation as a less than serious, sweet, unsophisticated wine. Overthe last several years, rosés havebeen experiencing a makeover asrespected European winemakersbegan exporting more interestingexamples of rosés that may beblush in the bottle, but offer noreason to shame a winemakeramong their peers or a hostserving guests. NewWorld, including Israeli winemakershave been taking note and awider array of quality roses arebecoming available.

Visually rosés mayappear more like a red winethan a white. They can bedifferent intensities of pink, orange, salmon, russet or copper, yet the way quality rosés aremade and the way they are

served more resemble white wines. Likewhites they can be made dry or semi-dry oreven sparkling unlike reds which except fordessert wines are almost always dry. Likewhite wines they’re typically made to beserved chilled, and are meant to be drunkyoung and typically undergo little or no oakaging. Additionally, like whites rosés usuallyhave very little contact with the skins of thegrapes they derive their juice from which

makes them lighter in color than a red winefrom the same juice. The red wines haveconsiderably longer contact with the grapeskins and have deeper color, flavor, body andtannins. However, similar to red wines, roséstypically mimic the flavors of red and blackfruits in contrast to the citric, apple, pear, peach and apricot common to white wines.

With the recent resurgence of rosé as aquality wine, more and more Israeli winerieshave been releasing better and better rosés.Even award-winning boutique wineries aremaking what was once more reserved forlarger commercial wineries.

Some of the better examples of Israelirosé from larger wineries in Israelare the Recanati, Dalton, BinyaminaYogev and Galil Mountain.Threedelectable examples of smallerbatch boutique rosés are offeredby the Chateau Golan,Vitkin andthe Alona wineries.

Whichever rosé youchoose to fill your glass, theyall should make a swelteringsummer in Israel far moreenjoyable. The more we drinkthis summer the more we canlook forward to more Israeliwineries producing theirversions in the future.

wenty-seven year old Nir Kourisfelt that it was his destiny to livein Ra’anana. After a summer ofinteracting with a group of

promising teens and hi-tech professionalswho hailed from Ra’anana at ecampIsrael—which he co-founded in 2008—Kouris was so inspired that he decided tomove to the city. During the short timehe has lived here, Kouris has establishedthe Ra’anana branch of the TomorrowInternational Center for YouthDevelopment, which uses hi-tech tools toteach personal leadership and self-marketing skills.Through interactiveworkshops, lectures, and one-on-onementoring,Tomorrow enables teens tocultivate their individual skills and talentsthrough the use of the web, with the goalof becoming “ceWEBrities”, as Kouriscalls them.

Tomorrow is working on a few different

digital projects —the largest of which is thecreation of a Facebook Community page forthe entire city of Ra’anana. The aim of theproject is to turn Ra’anana’s Community pageinto Israel’s first “digital city”. As the popularhi-tech website Tech Crunch explains,“Facebook’s somewhat-ambiguously titled

‘Pages’ are what brands and celebrities use toestablish a presence on the social network…

Community pages are meant to be ‘thebest collection of shared knowledge on atopic’.” Kouris, who owns a digital marketingfirm and specializes in Facebook marketing,

explains that the concept of branding is nolonger exclusively used for large corporationslike Nike or Sony. “The concept of hasbara forIsrael is being replaced with branding”, he says.“Even though the city of Ra’anana never wentthrough an official branding strategy, it doeshave a great reputation for being a great placefor families, children, and teenagers with manyactivities, but this isn’t being reflected in thecity’s online presence,” he says. The concept ofRa’anana’s Facebook Community page willenable the branding of the city to developorganically: from the residents themselves.

The idea for the first digital city beganto brew as Kouris connected with moreresidents here, which allowed him to gain adeep familiarity with the city. He sees a highconcentration of hi-tech companies andprofessionals, and a high number of residentswho are active on various social networkingsites (facebook, yahoogroups, twitter, etc), yethe noticed that there’s hardly any expressionof the city’s vitality on the web. A staunchbeliever in the value of user-generatedmaterial—one of the unique aspects of “web2.0”—Kouris realized that the key todeveloping the future of Ra’anana is tocultivate the city’s online presence bygarnering the participation of its residents. Hebelieves in the ability of the individual residentto become a representative of the city, agrassroots “ambassador”, if you will. “Everyperson will have the ability to be anadministrator, uploading material, photos, publicizing events. We can build the citydigitally,” Kouris says

A group of teens from the TomorrowCenter are currently working on this project. The structure of the Community page willlook like a wikipedia –type feature, whereusers can upload their own content and shareit with each other and the world. Theactivities that users choose to upload in thecity will be communicated through this socialnetwork, thereby creating a real-time imagefor the city. If one wishes to share material onHaPoel Ra’anana’s win in the latest soccer

game, an interesting lecture at Ohel Ari, thenew art exhibit at Yad L’Banim, the boys’karate tournament, your lunch date withfriends at Cup o’ Joe, the high school choirpractice, Bnei Akiva programs, street festivals,a play date with the neighbor’s children, charity events and more, Ra’anana’sCommunity page will set the stage. The visionis to create a place where people will go forinformation, inspiration, communication andnetworking. And just think- it will be thecreation of teenagers.

The teens at Tomorrow are mentoredby a cadre of hi-tech professionals whovolunteer their time giving workshops, lectures and one-on-one support.Together, they discuss their vision, build websites, makepromotional videos, map-out online marketingcampaigns and network with others. The aimis “to teach teenagers how to becomeentrepreneurs, using their own skills andtalents, not just with technology, but withthemselves,” Kouris says. “Our focus is onleadership skills and self-marketing so thateach one of us can use the present to affectthe future. Thus our name ‘Tomorrow’.”

The Digital City project is connected toanother project that Tomorrow hosts called “Iam Israel.” As Kouris sees it, the face ofwhat used to be called hasbara ischanging. When he lectures aboutwhat the old-school calls “hasbara”,he entitles his lectures “Leadership”

or “Entrepreneurship”, and uses theseopportunities to talk about branding Israelpositively via the web. “The currentgeneration of leadership has lost the ability toinspire youngsters. When I talk to teens, I talkabout personal success, personal leadership. My message is that when you’re successful, you’ll be representing Israel.”

The concept of “I am Israel” is adaptedfrom the “Branding Israel” campaignundertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The campaign doesn’t address Israel’s right toexist per say, as hasbara campaigns did in thepast, but it focuses on the unique people anddifferent innovations from Israel. Such aconcept appeals to the younger generation, especially those who aim for excellence andwant to make an impact on the world.Thecampaign “I am Israel” therefore empowersthem to apply their individual talents in waysthat are meaningful to them and affect theworld at the same time. The same message isnow applied to Ra’anana’s Digital City on theFacebook Community page: when users sharematerial via their Facebook accounts, they’ll

have the ability toconnect with like-

minded individuals and share information, thereby becoming representatives of the city. How Facebook and the creators of theCommunity pages will monitor the material isstill unclear, but at this point it looks like suchan initiative will serve as a “Ra’anana-pedia”,enabling new, organic, searchable informationto be publicized about the city via the web.

From his activities at ecamp Israel to theTomorrow Center, Nir Kouris spends his daysand nights inspiring youth to live maximally, not just technologically. Born and bred onMoshav Balfuria in Emeq Izrael (near Afula),he spent four years in France with his familyand then returned to Israel (“an Oleh HadashLite”, he quips). A guru in the hi-tech industryfrom a young age, Kouris is leading a digitalrevolution and fortunately, he’s preparingRa’anana to be on the front lines.

Currently the Tomorrow Center is looking forpeople who are knowledgeable andpassionate about Ra’anana to contribute tothe page. Those who are interested cancontact the Center through its websitewww.tomorrow.co.il.

ure everyone wantsto go into the cities, but sometimes it’sjust too

crowded. Now that the summer isapproaching, why not take the kidsoutside and enjoy the beauty of nature? While you’re in the national parks on theSharon region, take in the history of theseplaces; you’ll appreciate yoursurroundings even more.Around theRa’anana area are some beautiful, nature-filled alternatives to the city that will takeyou back over 2,500 years!

Apollonia (Tel Arsuf) National ParkApollonia (Tel Arsuf) is built atop a coarsesandstone ridge bordering the seacoast andextending north from Herzliya. ThePhoenicians founded the first city on Tel Arsufseveral thousands of years ago. AlexanderYannai, the Hasmonena leader, conquered thecity in 80 B.C.E. and made it part of hiskingdom. During Arab rule the city wasknown as Arsuf, deviated from the Canaanitename Reshef. The Crusaders had trouble in

conquering this site, yet were successful in1101 (CE), renamed it Arsur, and made it thecapital of the entire region.

The park has an incredible CrusaderFortress, with a deep moat and fabulous viewof the entire area including the MediterraneanSea.

How to Get There: Take Coastal Highway(Rt.2) North of Herzliya Pitu’ah via the Nofyam neighborhood. Give yourself 1 ¼ hours,Entrance fee.

Yarkon National Park and Tel AfekTheYarkon Park is located east of Tel Aviv, and extends over 13,000 dunams (3,250acres). It encompasses two focal points:TelAfek (Antipatris) with its fortress overlookingthe Yarkon springs, and the Yarkon Riversources, where the stream and its banks arerich in plant and animal life.

This site is part of the ancient Via Maris(Sea Route) which goes all the way fromMeggido in the lower Galilee to Gaza on thesouthern coast. In ancient times, the SeaRoute in Israel served as a rest stop for themuch longer route from Egypt to Syria.

There are those who believe that this isthe true burial place of Rabbi Akiva. AlthoughRabbi Akiva’s grave is traditionally locatedin Tiberias, some question this location.Theirskepticism stems from the facts of RabbiAkiva’s murder in Ceasarea. After hishorrendous torture by the Romans in what isnow known as the Sharon region, why wouldhis body be taken all the way to Tiberias to beburied? To my knowledge, there is no

archaeological indication that Rabbi Akiva isreally buried here, but logic drives me toquestion his burial spot in Tiberias.

The Yarkon Park is great place to walkaround with the family, have picnics and enjoybeing in Israel’s great spring-summer weather!

How to Get There: Entrance to YarkonPark from Rt. 5, next to Yarkonim interchangeEntrance to Afek Park from Rt. 483 (PetahTikvah-Rosh Ha’ayin) next to Afek Junction.Tel: Visitor’s Center 03-934-8463.

o you suffer from lowerback pain ?Would you like tomove around free and easy, being able to do sports or

just play with your children orgrandchildren, without the fearof your lower back pain gettingworse?

Joint MobilityYour joints need to move freely and easily. Ifthe joints get “sticky” then the muscles aroundit will tighten up. If a joint moves well, themuscles are able to function correctly, andstay in the ideal state of tension.Actually, there are many techniques that you canuse at home to get your joints moving freelyand easily. The major causes of lower back painare eliminated simply and easily by using certainmuscle techniques.

InflammationIf your joints are tender to the touch, if yourmuscles are sensitive, then more than likelyinflammation is present. Inflammation requirestreatment. This will help heal the inflamed area.If the inflammation is left too long, the area willstiffen and become slower to heal, and evenscar tissue can form as a protection.

PostureIs your posture correct ? Do you stand straight?Well, don’t be alarmed. Posture is a function of

lower back pain, energy levels and generalhealth. If you are suffering from lower backpain, then your posture changes toaccommodate it. If you are tired, thenyou slouch and have a less idealposture. Posture IS important to

help the long-term removal oflower back pain.

What is the anatomy of thelower back ?The first step to understanding thevarious causes of lower back pain islearning about the normal design of thetissue in this area. Important structuresare in the lower back that can include theboney lumbar spine. The boney lumbar

spine is designed so the vertebrae stackedtogether can provide a more able structure.Thelumbar vertebrae stack immediately on top ofthe sacrum bone, in between the buttocks oneach side. The sacrum meets the iliac bone ofthe pelvis to form the sacro-iliac joints. Mostpatients end up at an Osteopath with sacro-iliacmisalignment, herniated discs and of course, pressure of the sciatic nerve which causes sharppains down the leg.

Osteo-arthritis is another very commonfactor of back and hip pain. Most of theseproblems are treatable in my clinic.

Classic examples and symptomsDo you have problems getting out of bed,

straightening up, getting out of a car, bending down to put on your socks and shoes ?Sometimes, these can be disc-related.

At my clinic, the patient is examined andassessed. Soft tissue therapy on the areatogether with classical Osteopathic treatment isprovided which can alleviate the problems andthe pain without too much effort.

Arthritic HipsExtreme pain in both hip joints radiating downthe leg and across the lower back can behelped with my specialized Osteopathic therapywhich can bring instant relief. Arthritis isaggravated by certain foods. Nutritional advicewill also be given for long-term relief.

For further information on Osteopathy andhow it can benefit you, please log in to mywebsite:www.stephen.co.il or feel free to callme 054 4423709.

Osteopathy is a whole body holisticsystem of therapy which alleviates and treatsmany problems from the young to the elderly.

Common Misconceptions

Over the years of my practice, I have heard complaints andstatements made by many who were convinced that nothingcould help them. Here are a few examples:

My pain is persistent, there is no cure The only option for me is to depend on painkillers and

surgery I am tired of physiotherapy and other methods of

treatment There is no remedy I must learn to live with my pain My pain is from wear and tear, old-age or deterioration

and nothing can help

Many of my patients have found that following Osteopathictreatment, most of these statements are then disproved.Whether your pain is from a fall, sports injury, wear & tear ordeterioration Osteopathy can alleviate the pain.It is also a misconception that if you are elderly, nothing canhelp. If your bones are brittle or you suffer from Osteoporosis,Osteopathy does help alleviate the pain.

A recent patient of mine, age +85 came to me suffering fromextreme back pain, osteoporosis, and spinal stenosis. After anumber of treatments he now says he is feeling 80% betterand without constant pain. Originally he came to me twice aweek and now only once a week.

Another example to the other extreme, are babies which Itreat mainly suffering from torticollis, which is where the babyfavors one side to the other. A flat head in babies is also quitecommon. These symptoms can be treated easily with two orthree treatments, as babies easily respond to treatments. Two weeks ago, I treated a baby where the cheek on one sidewas more prominent than the other side, causing an imbalanceand uneven facial façade. During the treatment within 15minutes major changes were noticed in the baby’s appearanceduring this first treatment. Since then, I have treated this babytwo more times and the problem has cleared up.

Train to Ra’anana

Ever since I made aliyah to Ra’anana in 2001,I have heard of plans for a railway line fromRa’anana to Tel Aviv. I have now looked intothis.
