When BETC Member Maeson Harper started learning tennis a couple years ago, she would stand still and swing the racquet at the ap- proaching ball and would frequently miss the ball entirely. And if the ball was out of her reach, she would never move to the ball, just swing and watch the ball go by. Well, that’s when she started the weekly Kent Parks Adaptive Recreation class offered by BETC Head Pro Allan Overland to learn the basics. Then she added additional lessons with BETC Pro Bill Bartlett’s Level 1 Junior Class. Then about 6 months ago, she started taking multiple lessons per week from BETC Pro Dan Cotton who is now her Special Olym- pics Tennis Coach. Maeson has improved her tennis game such that she runs to the ball every time, wherever it is on the court. She recently rallied with Coach Dan (she calls him the “Danimal”) for 19 balls straight. She has served 9 consecu- tive serves into the correct box. She knows that running for approach shots are preferable to the 5 pushups Coach Dan requires if the ball bounces twice. She works hard and en- joys the game. Getting to her lessons on time can be troublesome when there are hugs and conversations with Marsha, Cathy, Julie, Barb and Kenzie upon arrival at the Club. Clearly the social aspects of tennis are as important as technique. Maeson, who is 16 years old and has Down Syndrome, played her first matches (ever) at the Special Olympics National Tennis Cham- pionships in late October 2017 at Hilton Head, SC. She took 4th in Singles after losing to the (adult) Gold Medalist (1-4, 2-4). She took Bronze in Unified Doubles (with a typically- developing partner) and experienced the thrill of scoring, umpires, ball-boys/girls and playing on green clay courts with orange balls and 60’ baselines. Maeson is the Special Olympics Washington (SOWA) Tennis Female Athlete Delegate to the Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle this year in July.

(https://www.specialolympicsusagames.org/tennis-schedule). Maeson’s 2-hour practices with her fellow Special Olympians are on BETC Court 6 every Monday at 12:30 and every Friday at 1:30. If you want to keep track of Maeson’s team progress or donate to their training budget, Special Olympics has established the following website for the team: https://impact.sowa.org/team/157854. BETC is also sponsoring a 2-day (May 5th and 6th) Tennis Camp for People with Spe-cial Needs. All equipment is provided and Athletes of any (or no) ability are welcome. Registration and more information on the Camp is located here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2-day-special-needs-tennis-academy-gear-included-4-hrs-each-day-tickets-3958193062?aff=es2 Maeson and her family want to thank the BETC staff and pros for their sponsorship, dedication and warmth in helping Maeson adopt a sport that will hopefully be a part of

the rest of her life.

Here’s an early notice that our popular Spring Break Junior Ten-nis Camps are coming in April! From Tuesday-Friday, April 10-13, we will run four sessions for junior players of virtually all levels of play. Each camp will feature authentic USTA High Perfor-mance training, and plenty of challenging drills and games, giving juniors a great opportunity to sharpen their games during the week off from school. The Champs camp (advanced, levels 4 and up, ages 12-18 years) runs daily from 10-12pm, the Chal-lengers camp (intermediate, lev-els 2 and 3, ages 12-18 years) runs daily from 12-2pm, the Rookies camp (beginner, level 1,

In March, we are pleased to bring back the Adult USTA High Per-formance Clinics, with the 2.5-3.0 clinic held on Saturday, March 3rd, from 9:30-12:30pm, and the 3.5-4.0 clinic held on Saturday, March 10th, from 9:30-12:30pm. Each clinic will be led by USTA High Performance certified pros JJ Jackson and myself, and will focus on point construction and strategy with players doing a lot of live ball games (you will be playing points virtually the entire time!) A detailed handout of what is covered will be included- as well as snacks and beverages. Only 12 players (4 players per court/pro) will be taken to ensure

a great workout, so sign up now.

USTA Member Guest Ratio

Our first priority at BETC is serv-ing our members. As part of that, we sponsor USTA teams to play out of our club in order to serve our members that are interested in interclub activities like USTA. However, we have to balance both the amount of teams we sponsor and the ratio of mem-bers to non-members on each team. In an effort to get more playing time for BETC members we are requiring 80% of all spon-sored teams to be comprised of Members. This rule goes into effect for the next USTA session starting in May (MXD 40+ and

MXD 55+)

“Taking Ground” - The way to win a tennis match

There are three general situa-tions that present themselves in a tennis match. These situ-ations can be broken down as offense, defense and neutral. The pros translate this to ei-ther taking ground, giving ground or holding ground.

Taking ground is for when you are on offense. This is demon-strated by moving forward and hitting the ball early. You will be playing closer to the base-line instead of hitting the ball 5-10 feet behind the baseline. Roger Federer has rejuvenat-ed his career by hitting most of his groundstrokes near the baseline. This enables Roger to take ground making his side of the court smaller, while making his opponent move back and give ground. “I can’t be playing long rallies five meters behind the baseline all

the time. I mean, I could but the other guys are better at it.” said Federer after a recent tournament win over Alexan-der Zverev. “I was trying to play as aggressive as possi-ble and the court plays fast if you do it the right way.”

To improve your game try taking ground by hitting

groundstrokes near the base-line. Hit the ball early and in front of you. Make sure your body weight is going forward as you contact the ball. You will then be taking ground making your court smaller while your opponent is retreat-ing making his court bigger.

See you on the courts!

The first tournament of 2018 was the Mint Valley Winter Classic held at the Mint Valley Racquet Club in Longview, WA. Jade Lancaster was seeded third in the Girls 18 Singles. She won a tough three set match in the quarters before losing 6-4,6-4 to the #1 seed and eventual cham-

pion, Angela Schuster.

The Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton hosted 343 of the northwest’s best junior players, including 7 from BETC at the THPRD Level 3 the weekend of January 12 -15. 8 year old Achy-uth Binu lived up to his #1 seed in the Boys 10 Singles winning all 4 of his matches without drop-ping a set. He also teamed with brother Madhav in the Boys 12 Doubles but lost their opening match. Madhav was the #6 seed in the Boys 12 Singles and won his first match before being upset by the #15 seed in the quarterfi-

nals. Erika Ito competed in the Girls 16 Singles and Doubles events. Erika won her first sin-gles match before falling to the #2 seed in a deciding third set tiebreaker. In doubles she and her partner won 2 matches be-fore losing in the semifinals. In the Boys 14 Singles, Arnav Sahu won his first two matches but lost to the top seeded player in the

round of 16.

The Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club held their New Years Tourna-ment—Stars/Trophies on the last weekend of the month. Madhav and Achyuth Binu both competed in the Boys 12 Singles event. #1 seed Madhav and #4 seed Achy-uth won their first two matches in straight sets – setting up a semi-final matchup between the two brothers. Unfortunately, Achyuth was forced to withdraw due to injury. Madhav moved on to the final where he lost to the #3

seed. Martina Antich played in the Girls 14 Singles, where she easily won her opening match but lost her next match in the

quarterfinals.

BETC had a strong contingent of Juniors at the Olympia Steam-boat Advanced Tournament in late February. Top finishers in-cluded Jade Lancaster, 2nd in Girls’ 18 Singles; Adeline Eklund, 2nd in Girls’ 16 Singles; Martina Antich, 2nd in Girls’ 14 Singles and Achyuth Binu, 2nd in Boys’ 12 Singles. Also participating were Madhav Binu, Amol Koli, Mia Rosa, Arnav Sahu, and Cy-

rus Shaviri.

For many of our Junior girls, High School tennis is now underway.

Best of luck to all!
