Project 1:
The team choosing this will be better off if:
They are highly motivated.
They Love intricate detail.
They have CNC training due to the detail
and compact nature of the components as
an assembly.
They are well organized and willing to meet
on a regular basis.
Past Work: The turning mirror project
Team 5 Fall 2009, did a wonderful job and the design is ready for critical review.
This is a very complicated device and will require considerable review
with small modifications to the mechanical structure before moving on
to fabrication.

Project 1: continue TEAM FRED redesign effort for turning mirrors
From MAE 490 Fall 2009, Led by Cheryl Rose
“The” FIX?
• Innovative
• Effective
• Ergonomic
• fully functional
design
• Can we add rotation to the mirrors?
• Can we fabricate such an animal?
• Tolerances, what about tolerances?
• Needs Further Evaluation / fabrication
• add rotation to design
Arc-sec.

diamond turning machine
In house
Ground floor project
• Design/fab mechanical fixture to Mount spindle
• Lightly mount spindle to machine/Tram
• Measure motion vibration accuracy linearity
• Specify lubrication material & cleanliness
Project 2:
Many thousand pounds
This type of optical system has myriad uses in the field
of remote sensing. It is also scalable from tiny to very
large. Might be a great use for the rapid prototyping
machine in MAE shop, work out the kinks before going
to production.
Project 3: Design a chassis for a Mersenne telescope.
This telescope would be on the order of 5 inches diameter and 6 or 7 inches long.
We would require the design to be using light-weighting techniques as well as the
use of flexures for the secondary mirror alignment.
The design would require a pocket in the chassis for the primary mirror mount as well
as a support structure that does not interfere with the clear aperture of the telescope (
really a telecentric beam expander).
the alignment tolerances are quite tight for the optical elements and if the chassis is
designed to these tolerances could cost considerable money to fabricate. However if
the design simply accounts for micro positioning of the secondary mirror, as one
would do by the use of flexures, the chassis would have fairly loose tolerances and
could be quite cheap to fabricate.
This project will require the fabrication of two optical elements, perhaps the CAO
could fund this part; maybe even use an OSE student team for the design verification
and specification

Dia=0.5

Project 4: Thin disk laser Folded Resonator design
Laser resonator is Currently 1.41meter total length
Want to fold to 0.3meter
• Have new optics, cavity calculations complete
• Have some tiny mounts
• Have some ideas
• Need mechanical designs
• Need fabrication of components
• Need assembly and test
Want at least 60W out of laser, that’s what we have now
Only its 4 feet long….
Project 5: IR collimator test system for evaluation of camera lenses on
The giga-pixel camera system.
Design system level
Station for collimator.
Work with Dave Pollock
for details.
We have some hardware
And basic designs
already in place
Optical pickups are just now being introduced for amplification of the strings and the signal is
simply sent to an amplifier
Past work: Acoustic guitar optical pickup.
a series of diodes illuminating the guitar
strings.
one pickup detector
for each string
This device would monitor the strings and when one string was struck, the processor ( ECE
project) would listen for the frequency of the note and output the fret pressed for each string
This would allow a guitar player to play
whatever he wants and the output would ,
through a computer GUI, write down the
tablature (notes) for the piece that is played
in near real time
Patent Potential
This device will be self contained, will mount to the
guitar in such a way as to not interfere with the
playability of the guitar and will have no connection to
the amplifier, at least not yet.
