An incredible sense of community is one of the greatest reasons most of us live in Madison County. Where else can you be so close to major metropolitan areas while still enjoying the quiet laid back lifestyle that a rural community offers?

Madison County Community Expo is a celebration of that sense of community that we all enjoy. Community organiza-tions, businesses and people all come together to explore what is in our back-yards or to get reacquainted with each other. It is a time to see old friends and make new ones.

Back for its seventh year, Expo promises even more of what we have come to expect and it’s still FREE.

“Expo has always provided an opportuni-ty for parents to bring their children and let them play, learn or explore while they explore all of the other exhibits,” said Jessica Lane, Chamber Investor Rela-tions and Event Planning Manager. “We have built upon that concept by bringing back some of the more popular activities such as the bounce house and COSI, but adding new activities such a life sized board game.”

Do you know a Madison County business owner that goes above and beyond? Nominate him or her for Madison County’s entrepreneur of the year.

Your Madison County Chamber of Commerce and economic development agency, Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation, are offering a $1,000 grant to a deserving entrepreneur as part of the 2012 Madison County Entrepreneur of the Year award.

“This is the second year of the Madison County business of the year awards. We are very pleased to be able to offer this fund-ing for our local entrepreneurs,” said Mike Boerger, President of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Board Director with the Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation.

In addition to entrepreneur of the year, a small business and large business of the year will be awarded. Small business of the year will receive 10 free hours of market-ing services from the Chamber’s In-House Marketing Firm. Large employer of the year will receive team building for their executive team (up to 20) at Procter Camp & Conference Center.

Businesses must be nominated for an award and self-nominations are allowed. Anyone may nominate a business for an award, but the business must be a member of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

The nomination criteria for all three awards are available at the Chamber of Commerce, 730 Keny Blvd., London, or can be request-ed by emailing [email protected]. The deadline for nominations is Friday, April 13.

The award recipients will be announced at the 2012 Madison County Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau and Madison County Future, Inc. Community Improvement Corporation Bonanza Annual Gala on Thursday, May 3 at the London Country Club. All nominees will be invited to attend and the winners shall remain a sur-prise until the announcement that evening.

Who we are: London Coffee Peddler provides great coffee, water, soft drinks, muffins, oatmeal, cookies, soup, sandwich and Ayars Family Farm Ice Cream. We sell bulk coffee in bean or ground. In addition, we perform minor bicycle tune-ups and have some repair parts, tubes, tires and light systems in stock.

What sets us apart from others: London Coffee Peddler provides a consistently high quality product at a fair price. The coffee is purchased directly from farms thereby giving access to the best quality beans and channeling the cash to where it is most needed in rural communities. This has also helped us control costs and pricing where most of our competitors have raised prices twice in the past year. The coffee you purchase from London Coffee Peddler is always fresh and recently roasted and ground. Who we serve: Customers come from all around the area. Several of my regular customers work at local businesses like BCI, JFS, ADS, Stanley, and the banks and law offices. We have had both trainers and students from OPOTA as well as students from Rosedale & Cedarville colleges. We also have had bicyclists from Columbus, South Charleston, Cedarville, Xenia, Bellbrook, Lancaster and as far as Boston, Seattle, Virginia and Southern California.

Madison County has cultivated our success: Many of the people of Madison County have expressed an interest in seeing me succeed and have made pronounced efforts to see that happen. Several Township Trustees have requested coffee and snacks for their events and talked to their counterparts in other townships about doing the same. I need to thank Huntington Bank and Ernie’s Medicine Shoppe. The Chamber of Commerce has cultivated our success: The Chamber of Commerce has provided technical and logistical support for London Coffee Peddler. They were also instrumental in introducing us to the township trustees. David has always been available and very responsive to our requests.

Jim Rinaldi: Photographer in focusBy Elizabeth Roby “Emotion, thought and discussion.” Jim Rinaldi, the owner of Wide Studios, has created a pas-sion for developing photographic images that evoke these three subjects. At age 11, Rinaldi found his creative outlet through photography as he worked along side a family friend who had an in home studio. The two worked together side by side capturing many memories through portraits and weddings. As Rinaldi continued to develop his talent his mentor had expressed to him that pursuing an-other area of study in school might be best. “My mentor said that the art field is very competi-tive and you will starve,” said Rinaldi. Moving into his college career Rinaldi studied and received a Bachelors of Arts in Sports Medi-cine. While he buried himself in books Rinaldi still carved out time to exercise his hobby of photography. “I never took a class on photography but I did take some art classes like painting, most of my photography was self-taught, a lot of reading,” said Rinaldi. After receiving a master in health education Rinaldi worked in sport medicine for nine years. Although creating a successful career in sports medicine Rinaldi continued to pursue photogra-phy on the side never letting that spark die in him. In 1999, Rinaldi found himself becoming busier in photography with more and more clients. The gradual incline in business made the idea of maintaining photography as a full-time job much more of a reality for him.

“I became busier and decided after 9 years of sports medicine to do photography full time, I am very fortunate and lucky to do something I love,” said Rinaldi. Wide Studios has now became a home for Rinaldi where he has found a large space to work with to support his creativity with a multitude of customers ranging from senior photo taking to sports action shots. How has Madison County made Jim successful?

“Madision County has been great to me, the people of Madison County can now feel like they have options in photography. The Chamber of Commerce also offers great business services and opportunities such as the Visitors Bureau guide which I take pictures for,” said Rinaldi. Along with Visitors Bureau guide Rinaldi also will offer his outlook and creativity for our new publication of Madison Monthly. As a resident of Madison County Rinaldi has many hopes for what the new publication will allow read-ers to take away with from reading it. “Readers will take away county awareness, there are a lot of places people don’t know about and events as well. People will now have the ability to venture out of their own community,” said Rinaldi. What does the future hold for Rinaldi? The future is bright in Rinaldi’s eyes. Now with his big work space right on Main St. in West Jeff he hopes to start offering photography classes. Education has been a part of Rinaldi’s portfolio as well with his experience at Edison Community College where he taught senior level commer-cial art and design. As you wander down Main St., you will now see Rinaldi’s wonderful window displays showcasing his talent. “Come on by the studio and check it out, I offer out side the box photography with something new other than what people are used to seeing.”

Mad About People Madison Monthly April 2012 Vol. 1, Issue 1

Why Madison Monthly?By Sean Hughes

One of the first things we realized when the Chamber of Commerce formed our Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) Division is that there was not a single unified source of communication celebrating from one end of our county to the other all of the events, activities, attractions, people and businesses.

This was especially true for getting out free information to the visitors of our communi-ties. We publish a biannual visitors guide, but because of its long-term nature, it doesn’t have specifics for these visitors as they enter our county.

The solution for us was to create a self-sup-portive (through advertising and editorial

contributions from the community) monthly magazine.

You are now reading the end result. However, it isn’t truly the end as the publication will continue to evolve to meet the desires of the community and our visitors.

Creating this first publicaion was very dif-ficult. We don’t have a team of writers, edi-tors, designers or even outside sales people.
