Day Dreams Farm/Marine City Tuesday, July 31, 2018 8:45 am - 4:00 pm $38-Res/$40-Non-Res June Sign-Up

Day Dreams Farm is an Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation center in Cottrellville, Michigan. Besides rescuing animals, they also teach trail and obstacle course riding, host events and rent out their arena for events. We will not be riding the horses, however we will still be able to learn and share in the wonderful world of horses from the ground. We will enjoy an introduction of the horses and other animals (goats and potbellied pigs), hands on grooming and bonding, and a riding demonstration. Weather is not an issue for this part of the day. They have a beautiful new indoor arena and a heated observation room. If the weather is nice- we will also en-joy a hayride around the farm. Please note: The senior center will be making a donation to the farm on your behalf that day; however if you would like to donate further to their efforts, you can bring a gift card to Home Depot, Menards, TSC or Family Farm that day. You can also make a mone-tary donation, if you would like.

After our farm visit we will travel to Marine City for lunch at Anita’s Riverfront Grille. Entrée choices are #1-Fish & Chips, #2-Hickory Burger, #3-Chicken Salad Pita, #4-Traverse City Michigan Cherry Salad or #5-Garden Pizza. Lunch also includes a salad, non-alcoholic drink and a cookie for dessert.

After lunch you will have about an hour to enjoy the town. You can choose to shop at the bakery, gourmet popcorn store, gift shops and Sweet Tooth- where you can buy old-fashioned candy, assorted chocolates, ice cream, and so much more! You can also choose to walk or sit along the riverfront and watch freighters and other boats go by.

Crust/Heavenly Scent Herb Farm Tuesday, August 14, 2018 8:45 am - 4:30 pm $37-Res/$39-Non-Res June Sign-Up

CRUST is a full-service retail and wholesale baking company located in downtown Fenton. They are dedicated to excellence in artisan principles, with all-natural ingredients that are locally sourced and organic whenever possible. CRUST produces over 120 different baked goods, and all are handcrafted using traditional baking methods. Their artisan breads were recently voted Mid-Michigan’s Best Bread, while their donuts were also ranked among the best in the state in a people’s choice vote in early 2014. Other sweet selections include: Viennoiserie pas-tries, cookies, muffins, scones, decorated event cakes and fruit pies. We will enjoy a tour of the facility, lunch, dessert and a glass of wine or beer.

After lunch we will head over the Heavenly Scent Herb Farm. The Farm is a unique destination. We will enjoy a tour of the greenhouse, which includes the history, as well as a snack & tea. You will find ginormous hanging baskets, wee faerie plants, herbs, annuals, scented geraniums, topiaries, and so many other interesting plants. Lovely garden accents such as trellises, benches, cement statues, and unusual containers will also charm you. After our tour, you will enter their garden where the refreshing sounds of falling water accompany you as you stroll through their gazebo, travel to the faerie garden, pass under pergolas, ginormous hanging baskets, annuals, and a large fountain where fish play among the water lilies. Intergenerational Fun Day! Thursday, June 21, 2018 10:30 am - 11:30 am FREE!

Would you like to spend an hour feeling and acting like a kid again? Then come to our intergenerational fun day on Thurs-day, June 21. Volunteer resident Emily Lester will be at the Center with her two year old son Oliver and seven year old daughter Lillie. You will have fun interacting as well as doing coloring pages, having a sing along and even being read to from the children. You can even try out a game of shuffleboard together. It will surely put a smile on not just your faces, but theirs as well! Socializing across generations has been shown to increase the amount of smiling and conversation among older adults, according to one Japanese study from 2013. Nu-merous studies have also linked social interaction with de-creased loneliness, delayed mental decline, lower blood pres-sure, and reduced risk of disease and death in elders. Refresh-ments will also be included.

If you have any of these items and are able to donate, the Center would appreciate it! Drop items at the front desk.

SHARP Program Senior Home Assistance & Repair Program

SHARP – Madison Heights has a program to help seniors, those that are physically challenged, and deployed servicemen and women in Madison Heights with home maintenance. The program is co-sponsored through the North Woodward Com-munity Foundation (of Troy). Volunteers perform chores & simple tasks that help seniors keep their homes safe and liva-ble. Seniors pay only for the materials, not the labor. If you or someone you know is interested, call the Senior Center at 248-545-3464 for assistance.

The Gift of Time Too many of our older and disabled neighbors are lonely and isolated. They long for just a brief visit now and then from someone who will take the time to sit and chat. And other families in our community are struggling to take care of a loved one at home. For these full-time caregivers, a break to run errands, go to their own doctor appointments, or just to relax for an hour is often impossible because their parent or spouse cannot be left alone.

If you have a few hours, once or twice a month, to visit or just sit with an older or disabled adult, your gift of time will make a huge difference for our lonely and struggling neigh-bors. No hands-on care or nursing experience is needed. For more information, call the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers at (586) 757-5551. www.ivcinfo.org

Now Accepting Credit/Debit Cards!

For your convenience, the Senior Center is now able to accept Credit/Debit cards as a form of payment! There will be a small processing fee for each transaction. Credit card payment will be taken in person only from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm daily.

* For security purposes, we do not accept payments over the phone. *Fee schedule will be posted at the front desk.

Rose Garden Help

The Senior Center is in need of a few volunteers to tend to the small rose garden located at the front of the Cen-ter. A seasoned “green thumbed” gardener is not neces-sary. We have experienced gardeners that are willing to share their knowledge, but they have physical limitations. If you are interested in helping out please contact us at, 248-545-3464.

Upcoming Trips

Upland Hills Farm/White Horse Inn/Past Tense Cider Mill Saturday, October 13, 2018 8:45 am – 4:30 pm $34-Res/$36-Non-Res August Sign-Up

Travel with us to Oxford for a visit to Upland Hills Farm for their Harvest Festival. Included in your cost is a visit with the ani-mals, demonstrations on how to milk a cow, how to shear sheep and how to spin wool as well as a hayride in the woods, a magic show and a walk on the trail. You may also choose to pick a pumpkin, feed the ducks and finish the day with a warm donut and cider on your own.

After our visit we will travel to The White Horse Inn where we will enjoy a tour of the inn as well as lunch. The White Horse Inn was completely renovated, restored and redesigned in 2014. Each room, space and piece of decor was carefully craft-ed and chosen by the owners, who wanted to pay homage to the 160-year-old history of this building in the community. Start your tour in the entrance lobby where a small section of the 1850s board sidewalk lies in its original place. After our tour we will have lunch. You will choose from Goulash, Chicken Pot Pie or Maurice Salad at the restaurant. Lunch also includes a non-alcoholic beverage and a chocolate chip cookie for des-sert.

After lunch we will head over to Past Tense Cider Mill in La-peer for their Fall Festival. The Past Tense Country Store of-fers a wide variety of unique home decor. They feature a year 'round Christmas department, the best selection of silk florals in the area, year 'round Halloween, candy, candles and so much more! Past Tense also has an Arts and Antiques store that features American Antiques and also products and artwork made locally in Michigan. Last but not least they have the Ci-der Mill and Restaurant with home baked bread, pies, home-made fudge, award winning cider and donuts, fresh pizza made from scratch, soups, salads, burgers and many more hot meals and cool treats! During the festival you can choose to enjoy a hay ride, go through their corn maze, make a scare-crow, pick a pumpkin and/or have cider and donuts on your own. We will have approximately 1 ½ hours to shop in their three stores before heading home from a fun filled fall day!

Ford Piquette Plant/ Mario’s/ Third Man Records Friday, September 21, 2018 9:30 am - 3:00 pm $43-Res/$45-Non-Res July Sign-Up

Our first stop of the day will be at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit where you can visit the birthplace of the Model T. The Plant is again open and evolving into a symbol of De-troit’s ability to invent, innovate, and rebound. The Ford Pi-quette Avenue Plant was declared a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 2006 and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and listed as a Michigan State Histor-ic Site in 2003. Walk the plank floors worn smooth by hundreds of workers and thousands of cars. See Henry Ford’s competi-tion, his early successes and false starts. Learn how volunteers saved one of the world’s most significant industrial buildings. And support their ongoing restoration and education projects here in the mechanical heart of Detroit. Motor City Brass Band (MCBB) is ranked among the top com-petition brass bands in North America. Its roots derive from Britain's 200-year-old venerable brass band heritage. MCBB was established in 1996 by John Aren, a Salvation Army officer and former member of the then current National Champion Illi-nois Brass Band. With musical director Craig Strain at the helm as conductor, arranger, and composer for the group since its inception, MCBB continues to musically define itself as an inte-gral part of the growing national brass band movement. MCBB has performed throughout the state as well as Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Ohio, & Ontario, Canada.

The Band annually participates in the First Section of the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA) Championships and, in 2001, released its first CD “After Five”. The band has shared the stage with some of Detroit area's finest ensembles and has featured some of its own stellar players in other perfor-mances. Through its performances across the region, events such as the Motor City Festival of Bands, and numerous school out-reach concerts, Motor City Brass Band is certainly living up to its motto, "It's more than a concert, it's a SHOW!"

Join us for an evening with the Motor City Brass Band. They will be playing a wide range of music from classical to jazz, pop, rock to sacred. There will truly be something for everyone to enjoy!

A Frazzled Farmer’s Conundrum

A farmer has just visited a local market and has bought a wolf, a goat and a cabbage. However, the shortest way home involves a river crossing, and the farmer has a very small boat. Which can only carry the farmer and one of the purchases. • Only the farmer can row the boat • If the farmer leaves the goat alone with

the wolf you can imagine what might happen

• Similarly, the goat would love to be alone with the cabbage!

Can you help the farmer get everything to the other side of the river?

May’s Answer: I understand you undertake to undermine my undertaking. Winner: Dan Maltese

Soup Donations

Do you love Ray’s soup as much as we do? Here’s how you can help make sure the soup doesn’t run dry! Ray generously makes soup for every-one each day. While he does not charge for the soup, we all know how expensive supplies for the soup can be. Please consider making a donation to help fund the making of the soups so the burden doesn’t always fall on Ray and he can keep providing this delicious service for you.
