Gerri’s Journal Looking Back: Hopefully the extreme cold is behind us and

everyone is doing well and enjoying the recent sunshine. Lots of members have been busy with all the specialty clubs and projects going on at the Extension Office. Seems like there is always lots to learn and participate in no matter how old or young you are in years, it only takes a desire and willingness to try new things. “Shine With Your Heart” has been an excellent theme for our homemaker year demonstrating all the positive things around us whether great or small. Even just a smile goes a long way in expressing encouragement to someone who’s day has not been great. Looking Forward: Along with springtime coming, we are looking forward to our County Annual Meeting which is coming up in April. This year is an evening meeting with entertainment planned instead of a guest speaker. Clubs are asked to answer roll call with a community service project they have been doing or one they’d like to do in the future. Gerri Dunaway, County President

SAVE ON AUTO INSURANCE Tuesday, April 12 - 11am-3:30pm

Taking the AARP Smart Driver Safety Course could earn you a discount on your automobile insurance premiums for three to five years, and you will be a better driver. Madison County Extension Office will host a four hour class on Tuesday, April 12th from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm. The Smart Driver Safety Program is a classroom course for drivers aged 50 and over. The course identifies many of the changes which occur as we age and suggests strategies for accommodating to those changes for safer driving. There will be NO exam. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate which many car insurance agencies honor with a discount. COST: $15.00 for AARP members, $20.00 for non-members. Seating is limited. Pre-register by calling 623-4072.

SWEATER CARE When it's time to put away sweaters for the season, say goodbye to losing a favorite sweater before its prime with these tips from the American Cleaning Institute:

Thoroughly clean all items before storing. Certain soils can attract insects. You wouldn't want your favorite sweater to become their feasting ground! In addition, stains that the eye can barely see may turn yellow or darken over time.

Don't iron sweaters before storing. Ironing may heat set stains that have not been completely removed. If they reappear after a long summer siesta, they may be impossible to remove.

Store sweaters in a cool, dark, dry, well-ventilated area. Good choices include a cool closet, an airtight chest, or an under-the-bed cardboard box. Avoid plastic bags or bins. They can trap air and moisture, creating a damp, unsuitable atmosphere.

COOKING FOR ONE OR TWO Monday, April 4th; 10am-noon or 6-8pm

Cooking for one or two people can seem like a difficult task, but with planning and scaled down recipes, it is a fun and nutritious way to enjoy home cooked meals without being wasteful. Using recipes that prepare smaller portions is a cost effective way to cook. Another useful method is cooking in bulk. Soups, casseroles, and crockpot meals can all be prepared in bulk and then frozen in individualized portions to be enjoyed throughout the week. During the class, we will be preparing two main dishes: Roasted Vegetables with Ham and Tortilla Layered Southwest “Lasagna”. Come join us as we discuss how to adjust recipes to make smaller portions, meal planning, grocery shopping, different techniques for easy cooking, and prepare delicious food! Seating is limited. Call 623-4072 to register by Friday, April 1st. Class to be held in Room 1 of the Madison County Cooperative Ext. Ed. Center.

Dear Extension Homemaker, I hope you have made your reservations for this year’s annual meeting. The KY 4-H Performing Arts Troupe will be the entertainment and I think we will be in for a treat. The troupe, which is a fairly new addition to the state 4-H program, is made up of 4-Hers from across the state. You won’t want to miss this performance. Just a reminder for those who use the equipment at the Extension Center: sewing machines, sewing equipment, and kitchen appliances are provided for your convenience. In order that they stay in good working order and are available for everyone’s use, please put things back as you found them, do not try to make repairs or adjustments, report any problems, and clean-up your work areas. If something is broken please tell one of the staff or leave a note if no one is available. Thanks for making a difference!

PRE-PLANNING—YOUR FINAL WISHES Wednesday, April 6, 1:00pm

FACT: Arrangements made in advance will relieve your family at the time of need. Difficult as this conversation is, it is a much greater distress (emotionally & financially) on our loved ones, if and when all these decisions are left to be made with no ideas of the specific wishes. Madison County Memorial Gardens will discuss family record guides, options, and other benefits of pre-planning a funeral. This program will be held Wednesday, April 6th, at 1:00, at the Madison County Cooperative Extension Education Center (Room B). Please call 623-4072 to pre-register so we will have plenty of hand-outs.

Educational programs provided by the Alzheimer’s Association: Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related

Behaviors Monday, April 25th, 1:00-2:30 pm

Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join us to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. This program will be held at the Madison County Cooperative Extension Education Center, 230 Duncannon Lane, Richmond.

Registration required. Please contact 1-800-272-3900.

The Other Dementias: LBD, VaD, and FTD

Tuesday, May 10th, 10:30a.m.

Scary, thrashing dreams? Hallucinations? Weird social behavior? Not all types of dementia have the same symptoms as Alzheimer’s Disease, which most people have heard of. There are other types of dementia that have different symptoms from Alzheimer’s and that may need different types of treatment. In this discussion you will learn about Lewy Body Dementia/Parkinson’s Dementia, vascular dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.

Please sign up by Friday, May 6th: 1-800-272-3900.

SLEEP DISORDERS—GETTING YOUR ZZZs Thursday, April 14th, 11:45a.m.

Room 229, Perkins Building, EKU Campus

Helpful sleep tips:

Say no to caffeine after 2 pm.

Avoid drinking alcohol before bed.

Keep your bedroom cool and dark.

Exercising regularly can help you to sleep, just make sure it’s not right before bed.

Lighten up on late night meals - a big meal at 9:30pm isn’t a great idea.

Take a hot bath before bed. The rise and then fall in your body temperature helps induce sleep.

Do some light reading (try a book or anything paper-based such as a magazine, not your smartphone or other device) before you fall asleep.

And if you need to make up for lost sleep, take a power nap. People who napped for 10 minutes were more alert and had sharper thinking than people who napped for 30 minutes. Lunch will be provided to everyone who preregisters by Friday, April 8th, call EKU at 622-8874.

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH Child abuse is a huge problem in America. According to Childhelp, the United States has one of the worse records among industrialized nations with more than 3 million reports of child abuse made every year. In the

United States, between four and seven children die every day at the hands of child abuse or neglect. With April being child abuse prevention month, let’s take time to learn about the signs and symptoms of child abuse, so we can better spot problems. Signs and symptoms include injuries that cannot be explained, fearful behavior, bedwetting, a drop in self-confidence, unexplainable headaches or tummy aches, increase in nightmares, school failure or dramatic changes in weight or appetite, among others. If you suspect child abuse or neglect is occurring, contact the Child Protection Hot Line number, 1-877-KYSAFE1 (1-877-597-2231). The Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services website contains area phone numbers, frequently asked questions and other important information related to child abuse and neglect. You can access it at http://chfs.ky.gov/dcbs/dpp/. April 8th is Wear Blue Day. Wear blue to show your commitment to keeping kids safe.
