SOCKS IS FINALLY HOME!!!!!On Saturday, September 4th, our long time resident Socks went to his new home in Rock,

Michigan. For all of you that know Socks, he is a sweet, shy and scared little guy that didn’t knowanything about the outside world. He came to the Madison County Humane Society 9 years agoat age of only 9 weeks old and has lived all of these years, his entire life, behind bars in a small cage.

For some reason he was never adopted and one day nearly a month ago, the phone call came, “Iam interested in adopting Socks”. That was the beginning of a whole new life for him! WhenMichele McKinley took the phone call she instinctively said she just knew this was his new mommy! They spoke for quite a long time and then she faxed an adoption application, and the emails, phonecalls and pictures were flying back and forth from Anderson to Michigan.

Shirley Parr, longtime animal lover saw the Socks story on the Wisconsin Border Collie Rescuesite and she fell in love with him immediately. She enlarged the photos of him, and kept them ather desk and looked at them hourly; just waiting for the day she could finally meet her new littleguy. After several months of working with Socks to get him to walk outside of the Humane Societycompound, getting him into a car, going into the office, being around other people, and listeningto Michele tell him the same bedtime story every night, Socks was told that his new mommy wascoming.

Shirley had a drive of 10 hours on Friday to get to Anderson from northern Michigan near Lake Superior. The Comfort Inn pro-vided her with a complimentary room to get the needed rest before meeting her new baby and the journey back to Socks new home. The plan was to travel only halfway home on Saturday. Socks rode just fine and was wonderful. Shirley checked in with us andreported that a couple of times she just looked over at him and started to cry just knowing what all he had gone through for ninelong years and today was a start of a whole new life. Socks spent his first night quietly in a hotel bathroom with the light on. Hedid just great in that small-enclosed space as that is all that he knew about life.

Shirley rescued a dog years ago in this same kind of situation and knew that Socks was initially going to need some very specialattention and care. Shirley is on vacation now for 2 weeks to stay at home with Socks and make him as comfortable as possible in hisnew forever home.

This is just one of those stories that you love to share and it is what makes Michele and I continue to do what we do everyday. This is our reward in the stressful world of animal abandonment, rescue, abuse, and the neglect of dogs and cats that we see daily inour community. The Socks story makes everything we do worthwhile!
