The year is off to a great start. Ritual Contest has come and gone. State Convention was very informative and enjoyable. Made new friends and visited old ones. May was a busy month at the Lodge, hope everyone got to enjoy some of the activit ies.
June is upon us, I would like to invite all Elks to come to the Lodge and enjoy. We are having breakfast the second Sunday of each month. Also on the 21st of June, Denise is in charge of Fathers Day, come down and see what she has planned. Wednesday nights we have some Elk members making dinner, 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The last Friday of the month is Cook Your Own Steak Night, which is always a fun time. Come on down to the Lodge and enjoy the fellowship. We
are also having a garage sale on the 6th of June, bring your used treasures.
On Family Night in the month of June, I would like the new members and their sponsors to come. We have pictures on the hall wall, you can take them home. Also, it would be great to see all of you.
A big thank you to Russ Suderman, for chairing Mothers Day, it was a great success. Also thanks to all who help make the Lodge great. Remember Elks care, Elks Share.
Faternally,
John Bliss

Keep In MindWhile at Convent ion we learned some new things, especially about the bar and br inging in alcohol to
raffle off. We as members of Benevolent Protect ive Order of Elks, know that dr inking at the bar is a pr ivilege
and not a r ight . As members we have pr ivileges in this lodge and know that at any t ime these pr ivileges can be
taken away. Over the past years the Order has lost L odges over misconduct in dr inking and dr iving under the
influence. The Elks is not about dr inking but more about helping and protect ing our communit ies, and by
dr inking and dr iving we take the lives of those in the community in our hands. In our own lodge we know each
other and ourselves to cut one another off. Yes, they will be mad, but it is one more life that will see their
families the next day. When is comes to dr inking, know your limits and if you know you drank to much give
your keys to the bartender and take a cab home.
Raffles are fun, however we can no longer raffle off alcohol. At Convent ion we learned that we can only
raffle off gift cards or br ing in empty bot t les of wine/liquor to show the pr ize that is won. The reason why we
can longer do this, is due to the fact it goes against our regulat ions that we follow with ABC (Alcohol Beverage
and Cont rol). The next t ime we hold a special event , keep in mind whe we are raffling off any gift baskets, only
add a gift card to a place where alcohol can be purchased by the winner of the gift basket .

?So long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them?
May 16th, a day to feel the pride of being an American and member of B.P.O. Elks No 1918. On that day Madera Elks honored Veterans and guests of 120 with a meal of breaded pork chops, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, carrots, garlic bread, salad and dessert was cooked and served by Chow Dawgs assisted by Scout Master Robert Laburada, Dedria Laburada, Andrea Grey, Demos Gamble, Nicholas Provenzano, Shane Grey of VFW Troop 117.
Our lodge was granted for the f irst t ime, the Elks National Foundation Beacon Grant that made it possible to celebrate Armed Forces Day, f irst observed on May 20th 1950, to honor Americans serving in the f ive U.S. military branches.
You have heard it before, it takes time and energy to pull an event together; so let?s thank the following:
Harold Johnson Doug Nelson Chow Dawgs Troop 117
Irving Mercado Pat Johnson Debra Versteegh Deb Samora
VFW Chaplain Ed (Digger) Rosen Lodge Chaplain Lois Kyriss Granddaughter(s) (Johnson?s) ? Elizabeth and Bell.
Our E.R. John Bliss opened the ceremony with a few words, followed with Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.
Key Speakers: Charles Hunnicutt ? Madera County Veterans Service Off icer expanded on benefits for Veterans, dependents and survivors, specif ically, discharge data, claim time limits, dependent educational and widow benefits. Herman Barretto ? Fresno Vet Center, expounded on PTSD Traumatic Stress Disorder; the frequent misunderstandings, military history and studies of the disorder.
Recognition was given to 55 Madera National Guardsmen in attendance, County Supervisor, Rick Farinelli and East Central District V.P. Charlene Klinger and her spouse Wayne, Elks National Veterans Service Chairman
Benediction and closing acknowledgments ended a wonderful day.
Note: Eligibility for Elks National Foundation Grants is based on satisfying lodge per capita donations to ENF. Last year $3,141.75 was donated from our lodge. The Beacon Grant $2,000 made it possible to honor Veterans in our community.
Fraternally submitted,
Timi Milor, Grant Coordinator
