The European Rotogravure Association, ERA, founded in 1956, is a non-prot organization dedicated tosupporting users of the gravure printing process. ERA's mission is to promote gravure wherever it is appliedand to contribute to the healthy continuity of the gravure industry through the exchange of technicalinformation between the members.

Every second year ERA organizes and conducts the “Packaging Gravure Award”providing the opportunity for all participants / members in the production chain to show gravurequality in packaging printing.

The Award categories are:A. Flexible packaging – Paper (with no plastic or metal component)B. Flexible packaging – Plastic Film (including lm- lm laminates: no paper, no metal)C. Flexible packaging – Paper - Plastic lm laminates (with no metal)D. Flexible packaging – Metalized lm, metalized laminates and metal foil-plastic lm composites (with or without a paper component) E. Flexible packaging - Unsupported aluminum foil, paper- foil composites (with no plastic)F. Shrink – Wrap sleevesG. Cartonboard (of all types: tobacco, cosmetics drinks, etc.)H. Labels (paper or lm)S. Specialty and Security etc., including “intelligent” packaging such as printed RFID tag aerials, over -temperature sensors, etc.

This year, A. Hatzopoulos SA participated and was awarded for the product of “Saint Alby Blanc de Poulet”in the category of Flexible packaging Plastic lm & Laminates. The 2013 award is added to the two previousawards A. Hatzopoulos SA gained in 2009 and 2011. This special distinction is very important for us atA. Hatzopoulos SA since we’ve achieved once more to excel and distinguish between recognized competitors.

03HATZOPOULOS IN SPAIN

Hatzopoulos SA now in Spain! After the successful opening of our oces in France and the Netherlands during 2013, as well as in United Kingdom during the summer of 2012, we are expanding our presence through an ocial local representative in Spain.

Based in Vitoria, we will be oering our products to an additional European market, providing local service and support to our customers. Spain, having a population of 47,35 millions, has been aectedby the European nancial crisis, however the local food industry, between other industrial sectors, is still very strong.

The exible packaging market in Spain is valued for 550 millions €, while annually imports of more than 80 millions € of exible are taking place. Demand for High Barrier exible packaging is increasing year on year in contrary to the rest of lms where demand is stable.

Having specialization in these types of materials (High Barrier with or without ALU), our new step in the Spanish market is in line with our strategy for growth through exports of advanced packaging lms.

Flexible packaging materials are made from combinationof plastic, paper or metal lms which can be coated withvarious coatings, adhesives and inks, which through themanufacturing process, are converted to the lm usedfor the packaging of each individual nal product.

The above materials may contain substances, usually withlow molecular weight and high volatility. These can beperceived and are responsible for the odor, the intensityof which is aected by factors such as the concentrationof the substances and the temperature to which it is exposed.

Odor is a very important aspect in industrial packagingmaterials, as it can play a negative role in customer satisfaction,it may pose a health safety problem, but also can cause seriousdamage to the brand name and lead to legal disputes betweensuppliers and users of the material with the expected economicconsequences.

According to the legislation covering materials intended forfood packaging , "they should be manufactured according togood manufacturing practices , so under normal or foreseeableconditions of use, do not transfer to the food, substances inamount that among others, may deteriorate the organolepticcharacteristics of the packed product”.

In A. Hatzopoulos SA, production process practice is based on:

a) the use of suitable raw materials such as lms that are certied for use in food packaging materials, low odor inks etc.

b) customizing output parameters so that the lowest possible level of residual solvents is achieved.

c) the appropriate processing, handling and storage conditions, in order to avoid the development of odor either because of changes in the material itself or due to contamination.

In the unpleasant case of a raised issue of odor in the packagingmaterial, the approach involves identication and assessment ofthe perceived odor from a panel of trained assessors throughspecialized sensory test and then identication and quanticationof the substance or group of substances that are "responsible" forthe perceived odor and correlation with the source, in order to beable to take any necessary preventive measures.

05LEGISLATION ON INKS

www.hatzopoulos.gr

German Legislation on printing inks. The ordinance will cover inks applied both in non-food contact and in food contact surface. Hence the positive list of substances will be adjusted, since inks for food contact surface were not initially included. The required Declaration of Compliance will follow the European Union Guidance with a requirement of declaring all the substances that might migrate. Denition of ink is still under interpretation and most probable date of measure application is the third quarter of 2015.

Swiss Ordinance on Packaging Inks. On the 1st of April, 4th edition of Annex 6 to the Swiss Ink Ordinance has been published and came into force. At the moment, there is activity in the process of approval for a number of substances which are either in list A, aiming in the adjustment (increase) of their migration limit, or in list B, aiming to be moved in list A.

German Legislation on Mineral Oils. There is a second draft of German proposed Ordinance, published in May. It covers only recycled ber based packaging in direct contact with food and it regulates only Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) for which it requires no migration. Denition of MOAH and detection limit is still missing.

French Legislation on BPA. At the moment, use of Bisphenol A is banned for products aimed for infants (under 3 years old) and from 2015 there will be a total ban. From the middle of 2014, labeling provisions will be applied, with dened warnings for pregnant women, breast feeding women and children under three years old. These warnings shall be included in the accompanying documentation of the packaging.

HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY DESIGN FLEXIBLE PACKAGING MATERIALS

Flexible packaging materials should be designed to play multiple roles throughout the supply chain(from the converter to the consumer). These roles, or better these functions (see the following list), need tobe covered from the designer in order to develop a functional, safe and successful packaging material.

01. Economic/Benchmarking02. Laws’ conformity03. Consumer convenience04. Transportation05. Storage06. Protection07. Conservation08. Processing09. Portioning10. Communication/Marketing11. Environmental12. Innovation13. Quality

Even If some of these functions could be considered as given, well-known and established, the designer(or the R&D team) should carefully take them into consideration. The risk of packaging design failure is reallyminimized when a research including the following parameters has been conducted and all results are available:

• Industry involved (e.g. food, medical, etc.).• Nature of product to be packed (e.g. coee, rice, wet wipes, etc.).• Type of packaging (primary, secondary, etc.).• Filling process and packs post-processing (Hot-lling, aseptic, pasteurization, etc).• Packaging machine (VFFS, Lidding, Speed, working temperatures, jaws prole, etc.).• Mechanical drawings / Packages layouts and dimension tolerances.• Type of sealing (lap seal, n seal, overwrapping, lidding).• Portioning (weight of packed product).• Storage conditions.• Transport (trucks, air-freight, Post, Magazine distribution, etc.).• Expected shelf-life.• Specic characteristics (e.g. easy open, re-close, Easy tear, Modied atmosphere, etc.).• Communication and presentation (e.g. transparency, stiness, haptic, special printing, etc.).• Distribution and Retailing (Super Markets, Kiosks, etc.).

In A. Hatzopoulos S.A the above-described design process is included in our R&D procedure, having as a goal andachieving the development of successful exible packaging materials, in collaboration with our customers.
