LakeCounty, justnorthofNapa,hasbeengrowingpremiumwinessincethemid19thcenturywhenpeoplefirstrecognizedthatthevariedsoilsandmicroclimatesoftheregionwouldproducewinesofexceptionalquality.InLakeCounty,grapesaregrowninfourdistinctappellations– GuenocValley,RedHills,HighValley,andClearLake– eachwithitsowndistinctivesoiltype.Theseincludethesandyloam,serpentinesoilsofGuenoc;theironredvolcanicsoilsoftheRedHills;thegray-weathered,cinderashandsiltblendsofHighValley;and- atthebaseofdormantvolcanoMountKonocti- thealluvialsoilsofthe‘bigvalley’intheClearLakeAVA.

ThecommonfactorinLakeCounty’sdiverseterroiristhemoderatinginfluenceofClearLake,thelargestnaturallakeinCalifornia,whichgivesthecountyitsname.Warmdaysandplummetingnighttimetemperaturesletgrapesripenatoptimumratesformoderatesugarswithsufficientacidity.ProtectedbythelowsummerhumidityofLakeCounty,botrytis-susceptiblegrapesadaptwellinthisenvironment.

Beforeprohibitionin1921,LakeCountyhad28commercialwineries,makingitthelargestpre-prohibitiongrape-producingcountyinCalifornia,buttheareawasslowinrecoveringasvineyardshadbeentornoutandreplacedbypearandwalnutorchards.Fromlessthan100acresin1965,LakeCountyvineyardacreagehasgrowntoover8,800todayandisbecomingoneofthewineindustriesfastestgrowingregions.

TheregionismostrecognizedforitsCabernetSauvignonandSauvignonBlanc.But,numerousothervarietalsdowellintheareaandareontherisesuchasPetiteSirah,Merlot,Syrah,CabernetFranc,Zinfandel,Tempranillo,Chardonnay,andRiesling.In additiontosome167growers,therearenow32wineriesinLakeCounty.Winecriticsarepayingattention.LakeCountywineshavebeenwinningawardsandreceivingcriticalacclaim.

Theregionboastssomeofthebestairqualityinthestate.Inaddition,themajorityofthevineyardsareplantedabove1,500feet.Thiscreatesahigheranddriergrowingenvironmentthatreducesthethreatofmildewandpestpressure,resultinginlesspesticideuse.
