Mad Hatter’s was formed way back in 2001 following an intoxicated discussion over too many bottles of cheap vino at a family get

together.

This question quite rightly arose: Why are there so many coffee shops in Britain, when we are a nation of tea drinkers?

After the hangover had subsided, Rob packed his bags and left the bright lights of London to return to his home town of Cardiff

after 12 years in exile. With just £4.50, a chopping board and a breadknife the first shop was opened with his brother-in-law in

Swansea, then onto Whitchurch Road in Cardiff.

Following some help from some family and friends (Big high 5k to Bernie & Danielle), there was now enough money to buy a

kettle and some tea bags. The dream soon became a reality. Tea and sandwiches were being sold to the masses and the shop

grew in popularity. The big high street brands began to get nervous as the shop moved to Crwys Road. The team started to grow

with 'Mad Maria', 'Telephone Tim' and 'Smoothie Sue' all doing their funky stuff with a bit of bread and butter and a few sandwich

fillings.

Time marched on and the company pushbikes were soon replaced with shiny, old vans and deliveries were made to the five

corners of Cardiff (or as far as the vans would go, without breaking down). Robs better half 'Sultry Sabina' joined the party and a

new kettle was brought in to meet demand. The big high street brands continued to get nervous as the shop branched into coffee

and started to get candles on the tables.

As we approach the present, a new, posher Tea Emporium has been opened at The Gate Art Centre with 'Groovy Gareth' at

the helm, 'The Real Slim Adey' on cooking with a pair of Jacks serving the food and beverages. 'Jimmy The Counter' now looks

after the wonga, the menu is at least 12% sexier and includes more tea than ever before.

As Mad Hatter’s continues to grow, the love, passion and craziness continue to be part of our culture. Our mission is simple.
