MACRA BROADCASTING MONITORING UNIT 1st QUARTER REPORT
1ST JANUARY – 31st MARCH, 2015
1.0. INTRODUCTION
The Broadcasting Monitoring Unit monitored 26 broadcasting stations
during the period beginning 1st January to 31th March, 2015. Of the 26
stations, 15 are National Broadcasters (two stations, Radio Maria and
Radio Islam, are in the category of Community of Interest). The
remaining 11 the stations are in the category of Geographical
Community (4 are religious stations). The Unit analyzed how the
broadcasting stations performed in terms of allocation of airtime on issue
based programming. The issues were categorized into eight groups,
namely: Business and Economy; Politics and Governance; Human
Rights; Courts and Police; Sports and Entertainment; Foreign Content;
and Health and Education. The data was collected from news bulletins
and programmes aired on these stations.
2.0. SIGNAL AVAILABILITY
During this period, most of the broadcasters did well in continuously
being on air and having a signal of good quality. ZBS, Radio Maria, Radio
Islam, MBC 1, MBC 2, Ufulu FM, Capital FM and MBC TV performed well
in as far as consistent signal availability and quality is concern. Star FM
ranked lowest but still registered a notable improvement when compared

to their performance in the last quarter. The chart below shows how
stations performed in signal availability.

NATIONAL BROADCASTING STATIONS
FM POWER 101 (Private Radio Station)
The youth oriented programming resulted in Power 101 allocating much
of its airtime to issues on Sports and Entertainment (29%). The station
also allocated substantial airtime to issues on Human Rights (19%),
Politics and Governance (16%) and Economy and Business (14%).

MIJ FM allocated much of its airtime (32%) to issues on Entertainment.
Extensive coverage on court proceedings resulted in programming on
Human Rights and Courts coming second.

TIMES TELEVISION (Private Broadcasting Station)
Times Television focused more on Entertainment and Sports which
contributed to about 23% of the total airtime. This is a result of
entertainment oriented programmes such as Fusion and Urban Trend that are
aired every afternoon. However, programmes such as Thumba La Tambe,
Times Exclusive, TchuTchuTchu, Kalondolondo, have diverse topic range
leading to a significant share of airtime to various categories.

CAPITAL FM (Private Broadcasting Station)
Capital Radio programming hinged more on Economy and Business
issues which received 20% of total airtime. Issues on Politics and
Governance ranked second with 17%, while issues of Human Rights and
Police ranked third with 15% of the total allocation of airtime in the said
period. The station relays BBC and Voice of America programmes and
this contributed to Foreign Content getting 15% of the total airtime.

GALAXY (Private Broadcasting Station)
Galaxy FM dedicated 20% of its airtime to programming on Politics and
Governance in the period under review, followed by Human Rights, Court
and Police issues 17%. Most of the issue based programming is
presented in Morning Live, Galaxy Political Segment, and Ufulu Wathu.
Sports and Entertainment got 16% whereas Religion, Education and
Health got the least coverage.

STAR FM (Private Broadcasting Station)
Star FM allocated 60% of its airtime to programming on Entertainment
and Sports. This is largely a result of live football commentary. The
station also allocated significant airtime to religious programmes.

Joy FM allocated 74% of its airtime to issues on Entertainment and
Sports. This is a result of entertainment programmes such as Digest,
Natty Ride, Dimba. Foreign Content was second getting 8% of the total
airtime. This was a result of foreign content in the station’s news
programming.

MBC RADIO 2 (Public Broadcasting Station)
MBC Radio 2 gave a large percentage of its airtime to entertainment
programmes (51%). Foreign content in the station’s human interest news
bulletins resulted in the category getting 31 percent of the station’s total
airtime. Programming on Politics and Governance came third (12%).

UFULU FM (Private Broadcasting Station)
A lot of entertainment and sports programmes resulted in Entertainment
and Sports getting 28% of the total airtime. Extensive coverage on news
topics such as insecurity, robberies and alleged abduction of people with
albinism resulted in Human Rights, Courts & Police getting 24% of the
total airtime.

MBC RADIO ONE (Public Broadcasting Station)
MBC Radio One dedicated much of its airtime to programming on Sports
and Entertainment (24%). Issues on Politics and Governance came second
(22%) as a result of live and repeat broadcasts of presidential functions.

MBC Television featured a lot of Business in its programming but Politics
dominated much of the station’s news programming. Human Rights
issues also had a fair share of the station’s total airtime.

MATINDI FM (Private Broadcasting Station)
Matindi FM allocated 33% of its airtime to issues on Sports and
Entertainment as a result of music and sports programmes. Issues on
Human Rights and Courts came second (17%) because of extensive
coverage on cashgate court cases, the abduction of people living with
albinism and other human rights programmes.

The Blantyre based religious broadcasting station allocated much of its
airtime to issues on religion (33%). Human Rights came second (19%)
because of programmes such as the Boiling Point and Contemporary
Issues.

The station allocated 25% of its airtime to programmes on Entertainment
and Sports. This was a result of many music centred programmes.
Second was Human Rights and Courts, a result of news coverage on
cashgate court cases and cases of insecurity that have rocked the
country in the past months.

Broadcasting Station)
Business and Development dominated programming on CAN. Politics and
Foreign Content came second followed by Human Rights and
Entertainment. The radio station should be commended for balancing
issues in its programming.

PENTECOSTAL LIFE (Religious Community Broadcasting
Station)
Religious content dominated news and programming on the station.
Foreign content came second followed by Human rights. Education was
the least covered in the period under review.

MAZIKO (Geographical Community)
Foreign Content took the lead on the station followed by Business and
Development. At only 7% Health issues were the least covered.

MUDZIWATHU (Geographical Community)
During this period, issues on Business dominated Mudziwathu’s
airwaves getting 31% of the total airtime. This was followed by Human
Rights issues with 19%. The station has improved in diversifying their
programme content but intermittent power supply has been affecting
their output.

NKHOMA SYNOD (Religious Broadcasting Station)
Content on Religion received 34% of the total airtime largely a result of
Christian centered programmes. Issues on Human Rights followed with
22%.

NKHOTAKOTA RADIO
Sports and Entertainment received the most coverage getting 54% of the
total coverage. This is so because the station airs a lot of Entertainment
programmes, and plays a lot of music. Issues of Business and
Development came second with 17%. This was largely due to some
sponsored programmes on development. Issues on Politics, Governance
and Education were the least covered in the period under review.
